Effect of a Nonionic Detergent on the Spectral Absorption of Oxyhemoglobin in the Presence of Bilirubin

The presence of the nonionic detergent Brij 35 in a solution of oxyhemoglobin and bilirubin has been found to change the spectral transmission curve of the oxyhemoglobin. The major change is in the 475 mµ region, where the transmission is greatly increased. A combination of the bilirubin with the oxyhemoglobin by an intermediate linkage with the Brij is postulated.
