Newton’s Third Law in the Framework of Special Relativity for Charged Bodies Part 2: Preliminary Analysis of a Nano Relativistic Motor

(1) Background: In a recent paper discussing Newton’s third law in the framework of special relativity for charged bodies, it was suggested that one can construct a practical relativistic motor provided high enough charge and current densities are available. As on the macroscopic scale charge density is limited by the phenomena of dielectric breakdown, it was suggested to take advantage of the high charge densities which are available on the microscopic scale. (2) Methods: We use standard physical theories such as Maxwell electrodynamics and quantum mechanics, supplemented by tools from vector analysis and numerics. (3) Results: We show that a hydrogen atom either in the ground state or excited state will not produce a relativistic engine effect, but by breaking the symmetry or putting the electron in a wave packet state may produce relativistic motor effect. (4) Conclusions: A highly localized wave packet will produce a strong relativistic motor effect. The preliminary analysis of the current paper suggests new promising directions of research both theoretical and experimental.

Parametric Decay of Alfvénic Wave Packets in Nonperiodic Low-beta Plasmas

The parametric decay of finite-size Alfvén waves in nonperiodic low-beta plasmas is investigated using one-dimensional (1D) hybrid simulations. Compared with the usual small periodic system, a wave packet in a large system under the absorption boundary condition shows different decay dynamics, including reduced energy transfer, localized density cavitation, and ion heating. The resulting Alfvén wave dynamics are influenced by several factors relating to this instability, including the growth rate, central wave frequency, and unstable bandwidth. A final steady state of the wave packet may be achieved when the instability does not have enough time to develop within the residual packet, and the packet size shows well-defined scaling dependencies on the growth rate, wave amplitude, and plasma beta. Under the proper conditions, enhanced secondary decay can also be excited in the form of a narrow, amplified wave packet. These results may help to interpret laboratory and spacecraft observations of Alfvén waves, and to refine our understanding of the associated energy transport and ion heating.

Time Evolution of the Position Operators in a Bilayer Graphene

An electron wave packet in the relativistic strophotron FEL

The theory of free electron lasers (FELs) is well developed both in quantum mechanical and classical approaches. In strophotron FEL, in classical approach, resonance frequency and the gain are strongly dependent on initial parameters of electron beam. In the quantum mechanical approach considered by Zaretsky and Nersesov (1983 JETP 57 518), there is no such dependence. The correspondence between the quantum mechanical and classical approaches in a relativistic strophotron FEL is discussed. We study the initial distribution of electrons over vibrational levels determined by the expansion coefficients in relativistic strophotron FEL. It is shown, (presenting electron wave function in the form of Gaussian wave packet), that the number of the vibrational level most efficiently populated at the initial moment of time can be expressed in terms of the initial parameters of the electron beam.

A boundary division guiding synchrosqueezed wave packet transform method for rolling bearing fault diagnosis

Synchrosqueezed wave packet transform (SSWPT) can effectively reconstruct the band-limited components of the signal by inputting the specific reconstructed boundaries and it provides an alternative bearing fault diagnosis method. However, the selection of reconstructed boundaries can significantly affect the fault feature extraction performance of SSWPT. Accordingly, this paper presents a boundary division guiding SSWPT (BD-SSWPT) method. In this method, an adaptive boundary division method is developed to effectively determine the reconstructed boundaries of SSWPT. Firstly, the marginal spectrum of SSWPT, more robust to noise than the Fourier spectrum, is defined for the scale-space division to obtain the initial boundaries. Secondly, the inverse transform of SSWPT is conducted based on the initial boundaries to obtain the initial reconstructed components. Thirdly, a boundary redefinition scheme, composed of clustering and combination, is conducted to redefine the boundaries. Finally, the potential components are extracted by the inverse transform of SSWPT based on the redefined boundaries. The validity of BD-SSWPT is verified by simulated and experimental analysis, and the superiority of BD-SSWPT is highlighted through comparison with singular spectrum decomposition (SSD) and an adaptive parameter optimized variational mode decomposition (AVMD). The results demonstrate that BD-SSWPT identifies more significant fault features and has higher computational efficiency than SSD and AVMD.
