Let$X$be a compact metrizable group and let$\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}$be a countable group acting on$X$by continuous group automorphisms. We give sufficient conditions under which the dynamical system$(X,\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4})$is surjunctive, i.e. every injective continuous map$\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}:X\rightarrow X$commuting with the action of$\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}$is surjective.

In this paper we introduce the notions of topological pressure and measure-theoretic entropy for a free semigroup action. Suppose that a free semigroup acts on a compact metric space by continuous self-maps. To this action we assign a skew-product transformation whose fiber topological pressure is taken to be the topological pressure of the initial action. Some properties of these two notions are given, followed by two main results. One is the relationship between the topological pressure of the skew-product transformation and the topological pressure of the free semigroup action, the other is the partial variational principle about the topological pressure. Moreover, we apply this partial variational principle to study the measure-theoretic entropy and the topological entropy of finite affine transformations on a metrizable group.

AbstractA homomorphism from a completely metrizable topological group into a free product of groups whose image is not contained in a factor of the free product is shown to be continuous with respect to the discrete topology on the range. In particular, any completely metrizable group topology on a free product is discrete.

AbstractLet K be a compact metrizable group and Γ be a finitely generated group of commuting automorphisms of K. We show that ergodicity of Γ implies Γ contains ergodic automorphisms if center of the action, Z(Γ)={α∈Aut(K)∣α commutes with elements of Γ} has descending chain condition. To explain that the condition on the center of the action is not restrictive, we discuss certain abelian groups which, in particular, provide new proofs to the theorems of Berend [Ergodic semigroups of epimorphisms. Trans. Amer. Math. Soc.289(1) (1985), 393–407] and Schmidt [Automorphisms of compact abelian groups and affine varieties. Proc. London Math. Soc. (3) 61 (1990), 480–496].

<p>An Abelian topological group G is strongly reflexive if every closed subgroup and every Hausdorff quotient of G and of its dual group G⋀, is reflexive.</p> <p>In this paper we prove the following: the annihilator of a closed subgroup of an almost metrizable group is topologically isomorphic to the dual of the corresponding Hausdorff quotient, and an analogous statement holds for the character group of the starting group. As a consequence of this perfect duality, an almost metrizable group is strongly reflexive just if its Hausdorff quotients, as well as the Hausdorff quotients of its dual, are reflexive. The simplification obtained may be significant from an operative point of view.</p>

AbstractLet X be a complex Banach space, G a compact abelian metrizable group and Λ a subset of Ĝ, the dual group of G. If X has the Radon-Nikodym property and is separable then has the Radon-Nikodym property. One consequence of this is that CΛ(G, X) has the Radon-Nikodym property whenever X has the Radon-Nikodym property and the Schur property and Λ is a Rosenthal set. A partial stability property for products of Rosenthal sets is also obtained.

AbstractWe study finitely generated, abelian groups Γ of continuous automorphisms of a compact, metrizable group X and introduce the descending chain condition for such pairs (X, Γ). If Γ acts expansively on X then (X, Γ) satisfies the descending chain condition, and (X, Γ) satisfies the descending chain condition if and only if it is algebraically and topologically isomorphic to a closed, shift-invariant subgroup of GΓ, where G is a compact Lie group. Furthermore every such subgroup of GΓ is a (higher dimensional) Markov shift whose alphabet is a compact Lie group. By using the descending chain condition we prove, for example, that the set of Γ-periodic points is dense in X whenever Γ acts expansively on X. Furthermore, if X is a compact group and (X, Γ) satisfies the descending chain condition, then every ergodic element of Γ has a dense set of periodic points. Finally we give an algebraic description of pairs (X, Γ) satisfying the descending chain condition under the assumption that X is abelian.
