Eliciting patients’ healthcare goals and concerns: Do questions influence responses?

There is increasing interest in asking patients questions before their visits to elicit goals and concerns, which is part of the move to support the concept of coproducing care. The phrasing and delivery of such questions differs across settings and is likely to influence responses. This report describes a study that (i) used a three-level model to categorize the goals and concerns elicited by two different pre-visit questions, and (ii) describes associations between responses elicited and the phrasing and delivery of the two questions. The questions were administered to patients with rheumatic disease, and patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Paper-based responses from 150 patients with rheumatic disease and 338 patients with IBD were analyzed (163 paper, 175 electronic). The goals and concerns elicited were primarily disease or symptom-specific. The specific goal and concern examples featured in one pre-visit question were more commonly reported in responses to that question, compared to the question without examples. Questions completed electronically before the visit were associated with longer responses than those completed on paper in the waiting room. In conclusion, how and when patients’ goals and concerns are elicited appears to have an impact on responses and warrants further investigation.

Technology Integration Models and Frameworks in Teaching and Training

The purpose of this study is to review the existing models and frameworks which has been implemented for technology integration during teaching and training. As discussed in the numerous literature Technological Pedagogical and Content Knowledge (TPACK), Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, Redefinition (SMAR), TPACK-based ID models such as TPACK-Comprehension, Observation of instruction, Practice of instruction, and Reflection on TPACK (TPACK-COPR) model, Introduce-TPACK, Demonstrate, Develop, Implement, Revise - a TPACK-based lesson, and Reflect on a TPACK-based lesson (TPACK-IDDIRR1) model, and TPACK-IDDIRR2 model have been applied by today’s instructors and trainers to achieve the specific goal for effective teaching and training. This paper intends to highlight the key features of the above-mentioned models and frameworks with few hurdles as found in the empirical-based studies. It also discusses how those hurdles could be mitigated by addressing the extraneous cognitive load of instructors as well as trainers to carry out technology integration with future recommendations for the research. It was found that specific frameworks and models are limited to the macro-level concept but today’s instructors, as well as trainers, are required to have adequate instructional guidance in chronological steps so that they could implement those models and frameworks in their teaching and training for productive outcomes.

Identifying Strategies as a Ploy for Overcoming Negative Effects of COVIDization of Economy

The main goal of this publication is to highlight the importance of the strategy as a ploy to overcome the negative effects as a result of COVIDization of the economy. The term COVIDization of the economy is the term that best describes the situation caused by COVID-19 in the short term and the long term consequences it will have for the business. The first wave presented the companies the economic challenges that they had to deal with in the short term. The subsequent two new waves also determined the need for strategic changes on the part of companies. In these conditions, all five strategies derived by Mintzberg appear – plan, a pattern of behavior, positioning, ploy, perspective. The article substantiates from a theoretical point of view the importance of strategy as a ploy through some of the most popular concepts used in strategic management - McKinsey’s 7S, the Pyramid for organizational development; through the Value-added chain, the Strategic map and Balance scorecard. Viewed in this way, “strategy” means the definition (undertaking) of a set of actions to achieve a specific goal under certain, set as a result of COVIDization, external conditions and available internal prerequisites. The presented empirical data are the result of a study conducted in the period March-April, 2020.

An Introduction to Machine Learning Approaches for Biomedical Research

Machine learning (ML) approaches are a collection of algorithms that attempt to extract patterns from data and to associate such patterns with discrete classes of samples in the data—e.g., given a series of features describing persons, a ML model predicts whether a person is diseased or healthy, or given features of animals, it predicts weather an animal is treated or control, or whether molecules have the potential to interact or not, etc. ML approaches can also find such patterns in an agnostic manner, i.e., without having information about the classes. Respectively, those methods are referred to as supervised and unsupervised ML. A third type of ML is reinforcement learning, which attempts to find a sequence of actions that contribute to achieving a specific goal. All of these methods are becoming increasingly popular in biomedical research in quite diverse areas including drug design, stratification of patients, medical images analysis, molecular interactions, prediction of therapy outcomes and many more. We describe several supervised and unsupervised ML techniques, and illustrate a series of prototypical examples using state-of-the-art computational approaches. Given the complexity of reinforcement learning, it is not discussed in detail here, instead, interested readers are referred to excellent reviews on that topic. We focus on concepts rather than procedures, as our goal is to attract the attention of researchers in biomedicine toward the plethora of powerful ML methods and their potential to leverage basic and applied research programs.

Poiesis as Decision Making: Shklovsky, Tynianov, Bakhtin

This article deals with the theories of Viktor Shklovsky and Iurii Tynianov from the perspective of decision science. It outlines how these two members of the Petersburg Society for the Study of Poetic Language (OPOIAZ) conceived of the writer as a rational agent pursuing a specific goal, and of the means at his or her disposal to attain it. Their approaches, the article illustrates, correspond closely with two specific types of rationality: “instrumental” and “bounded.” To conclude, the essay juxtaposes the formalists’ conceptualization of poetic creativity with Mikhail Bakhtin's view on the subject, arguing that the way he conceives of the strategies available to the literary author fits the label of “interactive rationality.”

EmbrASD: Android Mobile Application for Children with Autism as a Supplemental Tool for Therapy

Autism has a very wide range that influences people, specifically children in general. Usually, it affects a child’s social interaction, communication, behaviors, and interests. Providing a complete device for treatment which is planned to be used by kids with autism needs to be taken into consideration. There is no software available that will adhere to the main areas of autism. The development a multidimensional software that focuses the main areas of kids with autism was a specific goal that the paper is being addressed. It is planned from the viewpoint of several specialists: more particularly speech therapist, occupational therapist, Special Education (SPED) educator and an Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) specialist. The specialists’ focused objectives were lengthily included into the planning of the software. The development of an application for the young with autism that would completely attend to all the main areas that are initiated by autism and serves as an addendum to treatment is the primary goal of the study. Interviews from, speech therapist, occupational therapist, SPED teacher, ABA therapist and a SPED therapist will serve as a basis and the prototyping methodology for system development. With the implemented system, the intended users gave an approval on the application to be integrated in the teaching of children with autism. Suggestions on the improvement of the application comprises of including video recording for API 22, implementing the system in the iOS environment, and concentration on older autism cases were recommended.

HERMENEUTIKA AL-QUR`AN AMINA WADUD MUHSIN

Al-Qur'an has an important position in Islamic studies, beyond its function as a guidance, Holy Qur'an also functioned to be a differentiator. In interpreting hermeneutics, this is a form of interpretation method which in its operation is used to derive conclusions about the meaning of a text or verse. According to Amina Wadud, there is no truly objective method of interpreting the Qur'an. Each commentator sets several subjective choices. In Islamic studies, there are several approaches offered by intellectuals to get the moral message of Islam as a religion that has a gender perspective. Here the author attempt to discuss several examples of Amina Wadud's interpretation with her hermeneutical model regarding the issue of women's rights and roles. The aim is to evaluate the extent to which the position of women in Muslim culture has truly reflected the meaning of Islam regarding women in society. In addition, the specific goal is to demonstrate the ability to adapt the worldview of the Qur'an to women's issues according to the modern context. The author argues that the ultimate purpose of the theory is to build a harmony among of Islamic teaching: law, ethics, and theology, each of which has to support one another.

Mobile Robot Obstacle Avoidance Based on Neural Network with a Standardization Technique

Reactive algorithm in an unknown environment is very useful to deal with dynamic obstacles that may change unexpectantly and quickly because the workspace is dynamic in real-life applications, and this work is focusing on the dynamic and unknown environment by online updating data in each step toward a specific goal; sensing and avoiding the obstacles coming across its way toward the target by training to take the corrective action for every possible offset is one of the most challenging problems in the field of robotics. This problem is solved by proposing an Artificial Intelligence System (AIS), which works on the behaviour of Intelligent Autonomous Vehicles (IAVs) like humans in recognition, learning, decision making, and action. First, the use of the AIS and some navigation methods based on Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) to training datasets provided high Mean Square Error (MSE) from training on MATLAB Simulink tool. Standardization techniques were used to improve the performance of results from the training network on MATLAB Simulink. When it comes to knowledge-based systems, ANNs can be well adapted in an appropriate form. The adaption is related to the learning capacity since the network can consider and respond to new constraints and data related to the external environment.

Motivating the Journey: An Integrative Framework of Prevention Versus Promotion Goal Pursuit Activities

Does a focus on gains versus non-losses influence the kinds of activities people are motivated to use when pursuing their goals? This paper proposes that the prevention and promotion systems posited within regulatory focus theory motivate fundamentally different activities in the process of goal pursuit. We present a novel, integrative framework of regulatory focus-specific goal pursuit process activities and provide initial evidence testing this framework. First, across two studies involving activity sorting tasks, we predicted that participants would consistently categorize activities from the proposed framework as reflecting the hypothesized regulatory focus, and in making these categorization decisions, would sort regulatory focus-specific process activities from the proposed framework more quickly than more general goal pursuit process activities. Furthermore, in two follow-up studies probing activity accessibility, we hypothesized that motivationally relevant process activities (i.e., those reflecting individual differences in participants’ own regulatory focus) would be more accessible as measured by output primacy than process activities that were not motivationally relevant. Across these four studies, using both correlational and experimental methods, we found converging evidence in support of these predictions and our proposed framework. We suggest that this framework provides new insight into the motivational antecedents of distinct goal pursuit activities. Furthermore, it may be useful in generating new hypotheses about how best to motivate effective goal pursuit processes.
