The results of comparative design research in the thermal stress and strain state of the piston in transport diesel engine 2 F 10.5/12 are given for its rated power operation. The standard piston is made of an aluminium alloy, and the modernized one, of steel. Piston thermal profiling and indicator test results were used for identifying the mathematical models and refining the boundary conditions for mechanics and heat conduction problems. To ensure reliable heat rejection from the piston, the paper considered the case of oil jet cooling. This was taken into account when describing the boundary conditions of the heat conduction problem. The thin-wall steel piston with oil jet cooling was shown to function reliably under the study conditions. The temperature in the first compression ring groove does not exceed 200 °С, and the radial deformation of the piston crown is less than half of that of an aluminium alloy standard piston.

Modern Automobiles expect a high performance from its engines, which in turn places its requirements on the piston and cylinder components. Hence the piston has to deal with harsher, and tougher thermal and mechanical conditions. It has to undergo higher operating temperatures and pressures as well as higher speeds and at the same time keeping a check on the emissions. Pistons play a key role in increasing engine efficiency by reducing weight and frictional losses. This has made it essential to devise and search unique and creative concepts and materials for Pistons repeatedly, which offers what the engine demands. In this work Aluminium Alloy-4032 has been selected as the piston material of a 4-Stroke Diesel Engine and the piston rings are made of grey cast iron and alloy steel. Piston is designed by analytical methods taking both thermal and structural effects into consideration, then modelled on CATIA V5 and the analysis of structural deformation due to thermal stresses has been done using Finite Element Analysis of Steady State Thermal and its effect on static structure using Analysis software ANSYS.

Purpose With the implementation of new emission standards, the thermal–mechanical coupling load of engine pistons becomes more important. In this case, forged steel material with higher fatigue limit and impact resistance has been applied gradually in piston manufacturing. However, new failure problems emerge, and the wear of skirt under boundary lubrication conditions is an essential problem which needs to be solved urgently. Design/methodology/approach In this research, the abrasion testing machine was used to simulate the wear behavior under different conditions of normal pressure, relative velocity and surface roughness. Besides, the wear morphology was observed by scanning electron microscope. Then, the wear model was established by using test results fitting method, offering a way to conduct qualitative analysis for the wear problem under the same conditions. Findings The results show that mainly the wear mechanism of the piston skirt under boundary lubricated conditions is adhesive wear and abrasive wear. In addition, the coefficient and wear rate will increase with the increase in the normal load and surface roughness and decrease with the increase in the relative speed. In the wear model, the wear loss is mainly influenced by the normal load, the relative sliding speed and the wear time. Originality/value The wear degree of piston skirt was qualitatively obtained in this investigation by factors such as pressure, velocity and so on, and the wear mechanism of forged steel piston skirt under boundary lubrication conditions was also determined. These could provide theoretical support for further optimization of cylinder motion and oil supply system, reduction of friction loss and power loss.
