Ayu-Dag and other evidence of the Wrath of the Lord

An unusual shape of a laccolith in the southern coastal part of the Crimea, which, when seen from a distance, resembles a huge beast bending its muzzle to the water, could well determine its name, i. e. Ayu-Dag (Crimean Tatar — Ayuv Dağ, i. e. the Bear Mount). The legend about this toponym allegorically tells about a catastrophic earthquake, which the Crimean peninsula was exposed to in the Middle Ages. This natural phenomenon was reflected in three other local legends about the Castel Mount, Yalta and Sunen-Kaya. Most likely, this calamity took place during the first war between Kaffa and Theodoro, in October-November of 1423. In many ways, it can be compared with the notorious Yalta earthquake of 1927. The archaeological works on a number of medieval sites in the region can give a good idea of the consequences of the 15th-century seismic event, which embodied the wrath of the Lord: a monastery on the south-eastern slope of the Ayu-Dag, Funa’s fort, Kalamita and Cembalo, and Basilica in Eski-Kermen.

Multiscale Home: Shifting Landscapes and Living-in-Movement in Haiti

In January 2010, a catastrophic earthquake ravaged Haiti. In areas such as Port-au-Prince, the tragedy was compounded by an ensuing cholera outbreak. Here, conditions of prolonged crisis illuminate people’s resilient house-ing responses at the intersection of two dynamics: the vital relational character of Haitian houses and the necessity of mobility for producing new life. Rooted in the Haitian post-plantation world, the house (kay) does not constitute a bounded space but is rather realized conceptually and materially at diverse scales: people belong to many interdependent houses and houses belong to many interrelated people, sutured across space and time and between the living and the dead. In the wake of the 2010 disaster, and now amid the COVID-19 pandemic, new challenges and opportunities have arisen for diasporic families as they craft ways to enact and secure multiscale forms of livelihood. Entre la catástrofe de 2010 y la pandemia de Covid-19 surgen nuevos desafíos y oportunidades para las familias diaspóricas que encuentran nuevas formas de asegurar la vida en múltiples escalas. Resumo Em janeiro de 2010 um violento terremoto devastou o Haiti. Em áreas como a capital, Port-au-Prince, a tragédia foi agravada por uma epidemia de cólera. A crise prolongada ilumina a resiliência das pessoas na interseção de duas dinâmicas: a que aponta o caráter relacional e vital das casas haitianas e a que tematiza a mobilidade para produzir vida. Enraizada no mundo pós-plantação, a casa (kay) não é só um espaço limitado por fronteiras físicas, mas realizada conceitual e materialmente em diversas escalas: as pessoas pertencem a muitas casas interdependentes e as casas pertencem a muitas pessoas inter-relacionadas, através de vínculos suturados no espaço e no tempo e entre vivos e mortos. Na esteira do desastre de 2010, e em meio à pandemia de Covid-19, novos desafios e oportunidades surgem para as famílias diaspóricas à medida que criam novas maneiras de assegurar formas vitais em múltiplas escalas.

Methods for interpreting grace system data for solving geodynamic monitoring problems

The study is devoted to a detailed analysis of observational data from the GRACE space system to clarify the parameters of a catastrophic earthquake with a magnitude of MW = 8.8, which occurred in the subduction zone near the coast of Chile. Digital maps of changes in the EWH parameter over the geoid contour in the investigated seismically active region of the Chilean earthquakes of 2014 and 2015 were constructed. It is shown that there is a negative correlation between the value of the geodynamic parameter H for a strong earthquake with M W = 8.8 (distance from the hypocenter to the position of the Earth-Moon barycenter) and the equivalent water height above the geoid EWH. The highest correlation coefficient between the parameters H and EWH equal to R = -0.61 was noted during the period of registration of the number of postseismic events in the region of Central Chile. In the course of further research study the representative class of earthquakes for a detailed analysis of the variability of the EWH parameter and its relationship with geodynamic processes.

Earthquakes, Trauma, and Celestial Remedies

Chapter 4 examines the effects of trauma on religion, both as a spiritual refugee and as a source of conflict and encounter between competing cosmological epistemologies. It pursues this through an examination of Pentecostalism in Haiti, where many thousands of Haitians flocked to churches in the aftermath of the catastrophic earthquake of January 2010. Many Haitians used these spaces as spiritual safe sites from which they could begin to cope with psychological and physical trauma. At the same time, Haiti’s Pentecostal spiritual warriors, placing blame for the earthquake and its many other historical woes on Haiti’s Vodou religion, declared “celestial war” on Haiti’s native religion, setting off an embodied turf war for Haiti’s soul.

Variations of the total electronic concentration in the ionosphere in seismically active region

In this work we studied the variations in the total electron concentration (TEC) obtained from measurements of the global navigation system GPS in the preparation zone for the 2010 catastrophic Chilean earthquake (Mw = 8.8) under calm background conditions at a minimum of 24 solar activity (SA) cycles. The analysis of the geodynamic activity and ionospheric TEC disturbances in the seismically active region of this catastrophic earthquake is carried out. A computational technique has been developed that can be used to study TEC variations over seismically active regions.

GEOLOGICAL-AND-TECTONIC CONDITIONS OF FORMATION AND FOCAL MECHANISM OF TORAIGYR-SOGUETY EARTHQUAKE

The seismic characteristic of Toraigyr-Soguety earthquake is presented. The significant seismic events of the area are demonstrated including Chilik catastrophic earthquake. Geological-and-tectonic conditions of the epicentric areas of Chilik and Toraigyr-Soguety earthquakes are described. Kinematics of neotectonic faults is considered with respect to directions of main stress axes. Two models of focal mechanism of Toraigyr-Soguety earthquake compare with tectonic deformations of the area.
