Characterization of exoplanetary atmospheres through a model-unbiased spectral survey methodology

Context. Collecting a large variety of exoplanetary atmosphere measurements is crucial to improve our understanding of exoplanets. In this context, it is likely that the field would benefit from broad species surveys, particularly using transit spectroscopy, which is the most successful technique of exoplanetary atmosphere characterization so far. Aims. Our goal is to develop a model-unbiased technique using transit spectroscopy to analyze every qualified atomic spectral line in exoplanetary transit data, and search for relative absorption, that is, a decrease in the flux of the line when the planet is transiting. Methods. We analyzed archive data from HDS at Subaru, HIRES at Keck, UVES at VLT, and HARPS at LaSilla to test our spectral survey methodology. It first filtered individual lines by relative noise levels. It also corrected for spectral offsets and telluric contamination. Our methodology performed an analysis along time and wavelength. The latter employed a bootstrap corroboration. Results. We highlight the possible detections of Mn I and V II in HD 209459b data taken by HDS at Subaru (5.9σ at 5916.4 Å, 5.1σ at 6021.8 Å). The previous detection of Ca I in the same planet is classified as inconclusive by our algorithm, but we support the previous detection of Sc II (3.5σ at 6604.6 Å). We also highlight the possible detection of Ca I, Sc II, and Ti II in HD 189733 data taken by UVES at VLT (4.4σ at 6572.8 Å, 6.8σ at 6604.6 Å, and 3.5σ at 5910.1 Å), in addition to the possible detection of Al I in WASP-74b data taken by UVES at VLT (5.6σ at 6696.0 Å).

Investigation of Biocompatible PEO Coating Growth on cp-Ti with In Situ Spectroscopic Methods

The problem of the optimization of properties for biocompatible coatings as functional materials requires in-depth understanding of the coating formation processes; this allows for precise manufacturing of new generation implantable devices. Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) opens the possibility for the design of biomimetic surfaces for better biocompatibility of titanium materials. The pulsed bipolar PEO process of cp-Ti under voltage control was investigated using joint analysis of the surface characterization and by in situ methods of impedance spectroscopy and optical emission spectroscopy. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffractometry, coating thickness, and roughness measurements were used to characterize the surface morphology evolution during the treatment for 5 min. In situ impedance spectroscopy facilitated the evaluation of the PEO process frequency response and proposed the underlying equivalent circuit where parameters were correlated with the coating layer properties. In situ optical emission spectroscopy helped to analyze the spectral line evolutions for the substrate material and electrolyte species and to justify a method to estimate the coating thickness via the relation of the spectral line intensities. As a result, the optimal treatment time was established as 2 min; this provides a 9–11 µm thick PEO coating with Ra 1 µm, 3–5% porosity, and containing 75% of anatase. The methods for in-situ spectral diagnostics of the coating thickness and roughness were justified so that the treatment time can be corrected online when the coating achieves the required properties.

The spectral line asymmetry of the Doppler effect in relativistic plasmas

{In this work, we present a comparative study between the relativistic and non- relativistic Doppler effects on spectral line profiles in ultra-hot plasmas at the laboratory system. We have established an exact formula of the relativistic Doppler profile in ultra-high-temperature plasma that is not a Gaussian one (unlike the nonrelativistic Doppler profile that is Gaussian). We have also derived a new FWHM (Full Width at Half Maximum) formula of the corresponding profile that is different from the non-relativistic FWHM (sqrtlog(T=M)). We have also shown that, in the relativistic case, Doppler broadening exhibits an asymmetry of spectral line profile (non- gaussian profile). To ensure the validity of our investigation, we have compared our theoretical calculation with the experimental results that shows a good agreement.

Laser Opto-Electronic Oscillator and the Modulation of a Laser Emission

The autonomous optoelectronic generator (OEO) is considered in the chapter as a source of low-noise oscillations. Differential equations are considered and methods with OEO modulation with direct and external modulation are analyzed. The complexity of both approaches is related to the non-standard way of description of the nonlinear method modulation for the internal (direct) structure and the utilization of the specific Mach-Zehnder modulator for the first stage on external modulation. The purpose of the presentation is to consider the main features of OEO as a low-noise generator. This includes consideration based on the study of differential equations, the study of transients in OEO, and the calculation of phase noise. It is shown that different types of fibers with low losses at small bending radii can be used as a FOLD in OEO. The important role of the choice of a coherent laser for OEO with a small spectral line width is shown. The prospects of using structured fibers with low losses at bends of less than 10 mm in OEO are described. The results of modeling dynamic processes in OEO with direct modulation are presented.

Spectral line extraction based on ant-colony algorithm

A spectral-line-extraction algorithm based on the ant-colony algorithm is proposed to address the difficulty of extracting spectral lines in low signal-to-noise ratio conditions, and the problem that results from the optimal path algorithm falls into local optimization. The algorithm applies the ant-colony path-optimization strategy to detect a spectral line and constructs a corresponding mathematical model using the grid method. A new cost function is proposed to replace path length as the optimization standard in the conventional ant-colony algorithm. At the same time, the roulette rule is used to determine the direction of the next step. This algorithm improves the traditional heuristic function, increases the attraction of the target spectral line to the route search, and improves the convergence rate. Sea-trial data show that the algorithm performs better in extracting spectral lines with a low signal-to-noise ratio than the optimal path algorithm.
