Upscaling Remote Sensing Inversion Model of Wheat Field Cultivated Land Quality in the Huang-Huai-Hai Agricultural Region, China

It is an objective demand for sustainable agricultural development to realize fast and accurate cultivated land quality assessment. In this paper, Tengzhou city (county-scale hilly area: scale A), Shanghe county (county-scale plain area: scale B), and Huang-Huai-Hai region (including large-scale hilly and plain area: scale C and D) were taken as research areas. Through the conversion of evaluation systems, the inversion models at the county-scale were constructed. Then, the image scale conversion was carried out based on the numerical regression method, and the upscaling inversion was realized. The results showed that: (1) the conversion models of evaluation systems (CMES) are Y = 1.021x − 4.989 (CMESA−B), Y = 0.801x + 16.925 (CMESA−C), and Y = 0.959x + 3.458 (CMESC−D); (2) the booting stage is the best inversion phase; (3) the back propagation neural network model based on the combination index group (CI-BPNN) is the best inversion model, with the R2 are 0.723 (modeling set) and 0.722 (verification set). CI-BPNN and CI-BPNN-CMESA−B models are suitable for the hilly and plain areas at the county-scale, and the level area ratio difference is less than 4.87%. Furthermore, (4) the reflectance conversion model of short-wave infrared 2 is cubic, and the rest are quadratic. CI-BPNN-CMESA−C and CI-BPNN-CMESA−C-CMESC−D models realized upscaling inversion in the hilly and plain areas, with the maximum level area ratio difference being 1.60%. Additionally, (5) the wheat field quality has improved steadily since 2001 in the Huang-Huai-Hai region. This study proposes an upscaling inversion method of wheat field quality, which provides a scientific basis for cultivated land management and agricultural production in large areas.

Cerebral Macro- and Microcirculation during Ephedrine versus Phenylephrine Treatment in Anesthetized Brain Tumor Patients: A Randomized Clinical Trial Using Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Background This study compared ephedrine versus phenylephrine treatment on cerebral macro- and microcirculation, measured by cerebral blood flow, and capillary transit time heterogeneity, in anesthetized brain tumor patients. The hypothesis was that capillary transit time heterogeneity in selected brain regions is greater during phenylephrine than during ephedrine, thus reducing cerebral oxygen tension. Methods In this single-center, double-blinded, randomized clinical trial, 24 anesthetized brain tumor patients were randomly assigned to ephedrine or phenylephrine. Magnetic resonance imaging of peritumoral and contralateral hemispheres was performed before and during vasopressor infusion. The primary endpoint was between-group difference in capillary transit time heterogeneity. Secondary endpoints included changes in cerebral blood flow, estimated oxygen extraction fraction, and brain tissue oxygen tension. Results Data from 20 patients showed that mean (± SD) capillary transit time heterogeneity in the contralateral hemisphere increased during phenylephrine from 3.0 ± 0.5 to 3.2 ± 0.7 s and decreased during ephedrine from 3.1 ± 0.8 to 2.7 ± 0.7 s (difference phenylephrine versus difference ephedrine [95% CI], −0.6 [−0.9 to −0.2] s; P = 0.004). In the peritumoral region, the mean capillary transit time heterogeneity increased during phenylephrine from 4.1 ± 0.7 to 4.3 ± 0.8 s and decreased during ephedrine from 3.5 ± 0.9 to 3.3 ± 0.9 s (difference phenylephrine versus difference ephedrine [95%CI], −0.4[−0.9 to 0.1] s; P = 0.130). Cerebral blood flow (contralateral hemisphere ratio difference [95% CI], 0.3 [0.06 to 0.54]; P = 0.018; and peritumoral ratio difference [95% CI], 0.3 [0.06 to 0.54; P = 0.018) and estimated brain tissue oxygen tension (contralateral hemisphere ratio difference [95% CI], 0.34 [0.09 to 0.59]; P = 0.001; and peritumoral ratio difference [95% CI], 0.33 [0.09 to 0.57]; P = 0.010) were greater during ephedrine than phenylephrine in both regions. Conclusions Phenylephrine caused microcirculation in contralateral tissue, measured by the change in capillary transit time heterogeneity, to deteriorate compared with ephedrine, despite reaching similar mean arterial pressure endpoints. Ephedrine improved cerebral blood flow and tissue oxygenation in both brain regions and may be superior to phenylephrine in improving cerebral macro- and microscopic hemodynamics and oxygenation. Advancing indigenous fruits consumption to promote self-management in ill-health: a critical narrative review

Most African communities consume various edible fruits, which are important to their well-being. Some of these edible fruits are indigenous and were well-known to the rural communities. These indigenous fruits can be collected from the wild or planted in home gardens and also as intercrops with staple crops. Some indigenous fruits, wild collection is still practiced, especially in parts of eastern, western and southern Africa. However, some fruits are still imported. A casual verbal survey indicated that many people in the general population do not know that actual differences in nutritional values between these fruits. Therefore, this study was a critical review of some fruits using the USDA database. Results show, for instance, that guava has over 250% vitamin C relative to orange. Avocado yields more calories than banana and this is very likely due to the fat/fibre ratio difference. Further, the imported cucumber and watermelon do not seem to have any advantage over the indigenous products. It concluded that the hidden potential of these indigenous fruits needs to be advanced and exploited to improve their consumption as they play a pivotal role in health economics of healthy dietary habit and self-management of ill-health.

Filmwise Condensation From Humid Air On a Vertical Superhydrophilic Surface: Explicit Roles of the Humidity Ratio Difference and the Degree of Subcooling

The process involving heat and mass transfer during filmwise condensation (FWC) in presence of non-condensable gases (NCG) has great significance in a large variety of engineering applications. The vapor mass flux leading to condensation and the resulting condensation heat transfer coefficient (CHTC) are dependent on the gradients of temperature and vapor mass fraction established near the condenser plate. The effects of the two most influencing thermodynamic parameters, i.e., the degree of subcooling and the difference of humidity ratio (between the free stream environment and on the condenser plate), have been characterized in this work both experimentally and through a mechanistic model. The vapor mass flux during condensation on a subcooled vertical superhydrophilic surface under a free convection regime is experimentally measured in a controlled environment (temperature and humidity) chamber. A mechanistic model, based on the similarity of energy and species transports, is formulated for the thermogravitational boundary layer over the condenser plate and tuned against the experimental results. Further, the model is used to obtain comprehensive data of the condensate mass flux and CHTC as functions of the salient thermal operating conditions over a wide parametric range. Results indicate that humidity ratio difference has a more pronounced influence on the condensation mass transfer rather than the degree of subcooling. The mechanistic model lends to the development of empirical correlations of condensate mass flux and CHTC as explicit functions of these two parameters for easy use in practical FWC configurations.

Quantification of Bilateral Coronal Synostosis: Anterior Brachycephaly

Objectives: Very few studies focus on the quantification of severity of synostotic anterior brachycephaly. Aim of this study is to implement Utrecht Cranial Shape Quantifier (UCSQ) in brachycephaly patients to objectively quantify severity for both clinical and research purposes. Design: Retrospective study. Setting: Primary craniofacial center. Patients and Participants: Fifteen preoperative patients with bilateral coronal craniosynostosis (age <1.5 years). Intervention: Utrecht Cranial Shape Quantifier was used to quantify severity using the variables: width of frontal peak ratio, difference forehead peak and occiput peak, and width between sides of the head. Main Outcome Measure(s): The UCSQ variables were combined and related to Argenta clinical classification and cephalic index (CI) using 1-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). All parameters were derived from computed tomography scans. Results: Statistically significant differences were found between group means of UCSQ in the 3 categories of Argenta (ANOVA; F(2,12) = 22.461; P < .01). Tukey post hoc test showed a significant difference between Argenta types 1 and 2, types 1 and 3, and types 2 and 3 (all P < .01). Statistically significant differences were found between traditional CI and Argenta types ( F(2,12) = 4.956; P = .03). Tukey post hoc test showed significantly difference between Argenta type 1 and 3 ( P = .02). No differences were found between other types. Low correlation was found between UCSQ and CI ( r = 0.47). Conclusions: Utrecht Cranial Shape Quantifier objectively captures and quantifies the shape of synostotic brachycephaly, and we therefore developed a suitable method to put severity of synostotic (anterior) brachycephaly into numbers.
