Inertially enhanced mass transport using 3D-printed porous flow-through electrodes with periodic lattice structures

Electrochemical reactors utilizing flow-through electrodes (FTEs) provide an attractive path toward the efficient utilization of electrical energy, but their commercial viability and ultimate adoption hinge on attaining high currents to drive productivity and cost competitiveness. Conventional FTEs composed of random, porous media provide limited opportunity for architectural control and engineering of microscale transport. Alternatively, the design freedom engendered by additively manufacturing FTEs yields additional opportunities to further drive performance via flow engineering. Through experiment and validated continuum computation we analyze the mass transfer in three-dimensional (3D)–printed porous FTEs with periodic lattice structures and show that, in contrast to conventional electrodes, the mesoscopic length scales in 3D-printed electrodes lead to an increase in the mass correlation exponent as inertial flow effects dominate. The inertially enhanced mass transport yields mass transfer coefficients that exceed previously reported 3D-printed FTEs by 10 to 100 times, bringing 3D-printed FTE performance on par with conventional materials.

Advanced deterministic and stochastic kinetic modeling of gaseous microscale transport phenomena

Η θεωρητική και υπολογιστική μελέτη φαινομένων μεταφοράς μακριά από τη θερμοδυναμική ισορροπία σε καταστάσεις υψηλής αραιοποίησης είναι ένας από τους πιο ενδιαφέροντες και απαιτητικούς κλάδους της μηχανικής και της φυσικής. Αυτό το πεδίο έρευνας αποκτά όλο και περισσότερη προσοχή τα τελευταία χρόνια, καθώς τέτοιες καταστάσεις απαντώνται σε ένα μεγάλο εύρος εφαρμογών, από μικροδιατάξεις όπως επιταχυνσιόμετρα και μικρό χρωματογράφους έως μεγάλης κλίμακας δίκτυα μεταφοράς αερίων σε αντιδραστήρες σύντηξης και επιταχυντές σωματιδίων. Η συμπεριφορά των αερίων σε καταστάσεις υψηλής αραιοποίησης δεν μπορεί να περιγραφεί από τις συμβατικές προσεγγίσεις της ρευστοδυναμικής που βασίζονται στις εξισώσεις Navier-Stokes-Fourier λόγω του περιορισμένου αριθμού των συγκρούσεων μεταξύ των μορίων του αερίου που οδηγεί σε μεγάλες αποκλίσεις από την θερμοδυναμική ισορροπία. Η μοντελοποίηση φαινομένων σε τέτοιες συνθήκες βασίζεται στην κινητική θεωρία των αερίων μέσω της εξίσωσης Boltzmann. Αυτό αυξάνει σημαντικά την πολυπλοκότητα και το υπολογιστικό κόστος αυτών των προσομοιώσεων. Στην παρούσα διατριβή, οι κινητικές προσομοιώσεις γίνονται χρησιμοποιώντας τις, πλέον καθιερωμένες ντετερμινιστικές και στοχαστικές μεθόδους, αυτές των διακριτών ταχυτήτων (DVM) και της απευθείας προσομοίωσης Monte Carlo (DSMC). Καινοτόμες επεκτάσεις εισάγονται και για τις δύο αυτές μεθοδολογίες και η ακρίβεια και αποδοτικότητά τους παρουσιάζονται λύνοντας κάποια πρότυπα προβλήματα του κλάδου της αραιοποιημένης θερμορευστοδυναμικής. Στη συνέχεια οι προσεγγίσεις αυτές εφαρμόζονται για την μελέτη και κατανόηση της φυσικής πίσω από κάποια απρόσμενα και παράδοξα φαινόμενα που παρατηρούνται σε διατάξεις ροής και μεταφοράς θερμότητας σε καταστάσεις υψηλής αραιοποίησης. Επιπλέον, κάνοντας χρήση αποδοτικών και πρωτοπόρων υπολογιστικών προσεγγίσεων γίνεται υπολογιστική μελέτη ροής και μεταφοράς θερμότητας σε διατάξεις που απαντώνται σε μικροηλεκτρομηχανολογικά εξαρτήματα και σε συσκευές που λειτουργούν σε περιβάλλον χαμηλής πίεσης. Οι καινοτομίες στις αριθμητικές μεθοδολογίες που χρησιμοποιούνται σε συνδυασμό με τη μέθοδο διακριτών ταχυτήτων περιλαμβάνουν την ανάπτυξη και εφαρμογή α) ενός ημι-αναλυτικού αριθμητικού σχήματος που βασίζεται στην μέθοδο των χαρακτηριστικών για την επίλυση των κινητικών εξισώσεων υπό την επίδραση εξωτερικών πεδίων δυνάμεων, β) ενός σχήματος προέλασης για την επίλυση των κινητικών εξισώσεων σε αδόμητα πλέγματα και περίπλοκες γεωμετρίες, γ) και ενός αριθμητικού σχήματος επιτάχυνσης της σύγκλισης της μεθόδου διακριτών ταχυτήτων που επιδρά και στους οριακούς κόμβους και βασίζεται σε ημιάπειρες ροπές. Η καινοτομία σε συνδυασμό με την μέθοδο απευθείας προσομοίωσης Monte Carlo περιλαμβάνει τη διάσπαση της λύσης σε δύο επιμέρους τμήματα που αντιστοιχούν στα σωματίδια που φτάνουν σε κάποιο σημείο του πεδίου με και χωρίς ενδομοριακές αλληλεπιδράσεις. Γίνεται εφαρμογή της κινητικής θεωρίας στον σχεδιασμό συσκευών και διατάξεων που λειτουργούν σε συνθήκες υψηλής αραιοποίησης. Βρίσκεται το εύρος εφαρμογής, σε σχέση με τις παραμέτρους της ροής, των λεγόμενων πεπλεγμένων οριακών συνθηκών σε ροές λόγω κλίσης πίεσης. Γίνεται, επίσης, μία λεπτομερής παραμετρική ανάλυση διαφόρων διατάξεων που απαντώνται στον σχεδιασμό μικρο-αντλιών χωρίς κινούμενα μέρη. Τέλος, γίνεται ανάλυση αβεβαιότητας σε τυπικές διατάξεις ροής και μεταφοράς θερμότητας.

Inward Solidification Heat Transfer of Nano-Enhanced Phase Change Materials in a Spherical Capsule: An Experimental Study

The classical problem of inward solidification heat transfer inside a spherical capsule, with an application to thermal energy storage (TES), was revisited in the presence of nano-enhanced phase change materials (NePCM). The model NePCM samples were prepared by dispersing graphite nanoplatelets (GNPs) into 1-tetradecanol (C14H30O) at loadings up to 3.0 wt %. The transient phase change, energy retrieval, and heat transfer rates during solidification of the various NePCM samples were measured quantitatively using a volume-shrinkage-based indirect method. The data reduction and analysis were carried out under single-component, homogeneous assumption of the NePCM samples without considering the microscale transport phenomena of GNPs. It was shown that the total solidification time becomes monotonously shorter with increasing the loading of GNPs, in accordance with the increased effective thermal conductivity. The maximum relative acceleration of solidification was found to be more than 50% for the most concentrated sample, which seems to be appreciable for practical applications. In addition to enhanced heat conduction, the possible effects due to the elimination of supercooling and viscosity growth were elucidated. The heat retrieval rate was also shown to be increased monotonously with raising the loading of GNPs, although the heat storage capacity is sacrificed. Despite the remarkable acceleration of the solidification time, the use of a high loading (e.g., 3.0 wt %) was demonstrated to be possibly uneconomical because of the marginal gain in heat retrieval rate. Finally, correlations for the transient variations of the melt fraction and surface-averaged Nusselt number were proposed.

Electric-field–induced assembly and propulsion of chiral colloidal clusters

Chiral molecules with opposite handedness exhibit distinct physical, chemical, or biological properties. They pose challenges as well as opportunities in understanding the phase behavior of soft matter, designing enantioselective catalysts, and manufacturing single-handed pharmaceuticals. Microscopic particles, arranged in a chiral configuration, could also exhibit unusual optical, electric, or magnetic responses. Here we report a simple method to assemble achiral building blocks, i.e., the asymmetric colloidal dimers, into a family of chiral clusters. Under alternating current electric fields, two to four lying dimers associate closely with a central standing dimer and form both right- and left-handed clusters on a conducting substrate. The cluster configuration is primarily determined by the induced dipolar interactions between constituent dimers. Our theoretical model reveals that in-plane dipolar repulsion between petals in the cluster favors the achiral configuration, whereas out-of-plane attraction between the central dimer and surrounding petals favors a chiral arrangement. It is the competition between these two interactions that dictates the final configuration. The theoretical chirality phase diagram is found to be in excellent agreement with experimental observations. We further demonstrate that the broken symmetry in chiral clusters induces an unbalanced electrohydrodynamic flow surrounding them. As a result, they rotate in opposite directions according to their handedness. Both the assembly and propulsion mechanisms revealed here can be potentially applied to other types of asymmetric particles. Such kinds of chiral colloids will be useful for fabricating metamaterials, making model systems for both chiral molecules and active matter, or building propellers for microscale transport.
