Decentralised PI controller design based on dynamic interaction decoupling in the closed-loop behaviour of a flotation process

An enhanced method for design of decenralised proportional integral (PI) controllers to control various variables of flotation columns is proposed. These columns are multivariable processes characterised by multiple interacting manipulated and controlled variables. The control of more than one variable is not an easy problem to solve as a change in a specific manipulated variable affects more than one controlled variable. Paper proposes an improved method for design of decentralized PI controllers through the introduction of decoupling of the interconnected model of the process. Decoupling the system model has proven to be an effective strategy to reduce the influence of the interactions in the closed-loop control and consistently to keep the system stable. The mathematical derivations and the algorithm of the design procedure are described in detail. The behaviour and performance of the closed-loop systems without and with the application of the decoupling method was investigated and compared through simulations in MATLAB/Simulink. The results show that the decouplers - based closed-loop system has better performance than the closed-loop system without decouplers. The highest improvement (2 to 50 times) is in the steady-state error and 1.2 to 7 times in the settling and rising time. Controllers can easily be implemented.

Strategi Komunikasi Pemberdayaan Masyarakat pada Perguruan Tinggi Islam

This article discusses communication strategies for community empowerment carried out by universities. In an effort to achieve optimal targets, the role of effective commu­nication is very pivotal. In this case, the right empowerment communication strategy is to place communicators as moti­vators, dynamists, innovators, and facilitators for social change. In this regard, students, lecturers, or companion teams as communicators must be on a par with the commu­nity. It means that communicator and audience, expert and user, and sender and receiver interchange roles in a mutually beneficial two-way interaction through which qualified social empowerment can be reached. The communicator functions as a driving force for the community to be able to realise their potential independently in order to become more empo­wered. This communication strategy is appropriate for the bottom-up intervention model of community empowerment; self-help and togetherness model, integrative-interconnected model, and asset based community-driven development.

Incorporating a health team as part of a disadvantaged high school’s interconnected community learning model

Child poverty rates in Australia remain consistently high, with one in six children living in poverty. High levels of disadvantage result in compounding effects over the life trajectory and include adverse adult health vocational outcomes, increased premature morbidity and mortality and an intergenerational effect. Access to and the availability of services, including health, are restricted due to a complex mix of reasons that include a disconnection between an enabling strategic intent and action. Many young people begin life (including prenatal) with undiagnosed or poorly managed health issues, which subsequently affect the full range of developmental milestones throughout their school years. To counter these gaps in young people’s educational outcomes, a disadvantaged public high school in south-west Sydney introduced, over 10 years, a seven-member school health team employed directly by the school as part of an interconnected model of learning. The focus of this study was to determine the view of staff about the effectiveness and impact of the team as it connects to this holistic model of learning. The comments by staff are very positive and the universal view is that the introduction of a comprehensive interconnected school health team to the high school setting is proving highly beneficial.

Learning Study och kollegial CoRe stimulerar lärares professionella utveckling inom naturvetenskaplig undervisning

Syftet med studien är att klargöra hur lärares professionella utveckling stimuleras då de planerar och genomför en Learning Study (LS) kombinerad med verktyget Content Representation (CoRe). Data består av sex erfarna lärares inspelade diskussioner under åtta träffar då de planerar och analyserar en LS bestående av två lektioner i årkurs 6 inom kemi, samt tre CoRe som lärarna skriver. I början av studien talar lärarna mest om undervisning som att fakta ska förmedlas till eleverna. När de sedan planerar första lektionen övergår deras diskussioner till hur de kan stimulera eleverna till diskussion och reflektion. Lärarna planerar både lektion 1 och 2 utifrån ett variationsteoretiskt perspektiv, men lektion 1 genomförs inte i enlighet med vad de planerat. Det är först i lektion 2 som läraren behåller fokus på lärandeobjektet och dess kritiska aspekter. Resultatet av studien visar även att en Learning Study kombinerad med CoRe stimulerar lärares professionella utveckling och ämnesdidaktiska kompetens i form av lärande nätverk enligt Clarkes och Hollingsworths (2002) modell ”interconnected model of professional growth”. In English: The aim of this study is to explore science teachers’ professional development when they perform a Learning Study (LS), using the tool Content Representations (CoRe). The empirical data consists of six experienced teachers’ audio recorded discussions during eight meetings when they plan and analyse two lectures in chemistry for year 6 (age 12-13 years), and three written CoRe. In the beginning of the study, the teachers talk about teaching and learning mainly as transformation of facts. However, when they plan the first lecture, they discuss how to stimulate students’ discussions and reflections. The teachers planned both lectures according to variation theory. However, only the second lecture is also implemented according to their plan, with a focus on the object of learning. The results show that the combination of CoRe and LS stimulate also experienced teachers’ professional development, through growth networks according to the model "interconnected model of professional growth" (Clarke and Hollingsworth, 2002).

What Teachers Retain From Historic Site-Based Professional Development

Using a broad-based assessment for understanding what teachers learn in historic site-based professional development (HSBPD), this study follows 29 teachers from a HSBPD at Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello to see how their work at historic sites affected their practice upon return to their classrooms. Influenced by the Interconnected Model of Teacher Growth and Complexity theory, this study considers the complex outcomes of teachers as individuals, professionals, and learners in communities of practice. Results explore a range of outcomes related to content, pedagogical content knowledge, working with peers, interactions with the historic site, and a willingness to reconsider historical information. The discussion offers a consideration of the network of HSBPDs as a cumulative system and the ways in which teachers’ on-site work can deepen our understanding of working with complex historical sources and make larger curricular changes.

Επαγγελματική ανάπτυξη εκπαιδευτικών μέσα από το σχεδιασμό εκπαιδευτικού υλικού σε βασικές ιδέες νανοεπιστήμης και νανοτεχνολογίας στο πλαίσιο μιας κοινότητας μάθησης

Η παρούσα διατριβή επικεντρώνεται στην εκπαίδευση εν-ενεργεία εκπαιδευτικών σε έννοιες από το πεδίο της Νανο-Επιστήμης και της νανοΤεχνολογίας (ΝΕ-Τ) μέσα από τη διαδικασία σχεδιασμού και δόμησης μιας διδακτικής ενότητας. Μεθοδολογικό πλαίσιο για την υλοποίηση της έρευνας αποτέλεσε το Μοντέλο της Διδακτικής Αναδόμησης (Model of Educational Reconstruction MER, Duit, Gropengießer, Kattmann, Komorek & Parchmann, 2012). Ακολουθώντας τη φιλοσοφία του μοντέλου δομήθηκε μια Κοινότητα Μάθησης (Κ.Μ) στο πλαίσιο της οποίας πέντε εν-ενεργεία εκπαιδευτικοί (ένας Α΄θμιας και τέσσερις Β΄θμιας εκπαίδευσης) ανέπτυξαν μια διδακτική ενότητα σε έννοιες τις ΝΕ-Τ που ενσωματώνει κοινωνικο-επιστημονικά ζητήματα και διαστάσεις επικοινωνίας τηςεπιστήμης μέσω της δημιουργίας και παρουσίασης εκθεμάτων από τους μαθητές. Για το σχεδιασμό και τη δόμηση της ενότητας οι εκπαιδευτικοί συνεργάστηκαν με ερευνητές της Διδακτικής των Φυσικών Επιστημών (Δ.Φ.Ε), ερευνητές της ΝΕ-Τ και εμπειρογνώμονες από μουσεία επιστημών οι οποίοι και αποτέλεσαν ισότιμα μέλη της Κ.Μ. Τα ερευνητικά δεδομένα συγκεντρώθηκαν σε διάρκεια ενός έτους και περιλαμβάνουν ερωτηματολόγια, ημι-δομημένες συνεντεύξεις, βιντεοσκοπημένεςκαταγραφές των αλληλεπιδράσεων των μελών της Κ.Μ και το εκπαιδευτικό υλικό που ανέπτυξαν οι εκπαιδευόμενοι εκπαιδευτικοί. Για την ανάλυση των δεδομένων αξιοποιήθηκε κυρίως το Διασυνδεδεμένο Μοντέλο Επαγγελματικής Ανάπτυξης (Interconnected Model of Professional Growth, IMPG, Clarke & Hollingsworth, 2002), ως ένα ερευνητικό εργαλείο που επιτρέπει τη μελέτη των διαδικασιών μέσα από τις οποίες συντελείται η επαγγελματική αλλαγή των εκπαιδευτικών. Για τηνυποστήριξη της ανάλυσης σε αυτό το πλαίσιο χρησιμοποιήθηκαν μέθοδοι ανάλυσης περιεχομένου (content analysis) με βάση τις αρχές της θεμελιωμένης θεωρίας (grounded theory). Τα αποτελέσματα της έρευνας δείχνουν ότι η δυναμική της αλληλεπίδρασης των εκπαιδευτικών με τα μέλη της Κ.Μ μεταβάλλεται σύμφωνα με τα ενδιαφέροντα και τις προσωπικές τους ανάγκες στη βάση των προκλήσεων που προκύπτουν στις διαφορετικές φάσεις ανάπτυξης της ενότητας. Μέσα από αυτές τις αλληλεπιδράσεις εμπλέκονται σε διαδικασίες και μαθησιακές δραστηριότητες που προάγουν την εμπειρογνωμοσύνη τους για την ανάπτυξη εκπαιδευτικού υλικού σε έννοιες της ΝΕΤ, συμβάλλοντας στην επαγγελματική τους αλλαγή. Ταυτόχρονα, μέσα από τις προαναφερθείσες αλληλεπιδράσεις οι εκπαιδευτικοί λαμβάνουν εξειδικευμένη ανατροφοδότηση για διαστάσεις της ενότητας που αποτελούν για τους ίδιους μια εκπαιδευτική καινοτομία. Το γεγονός αυτό λειτουργεί υποστηρικτικά στην προσπάθεια τους να ερμηνεύσουν και να μετασχηματίσουν ένα νέο επιστημονικό περιεχόμενο σε περιεχόμενο προς διδασκαλία, υιοθετώντας διδακτικές προσεγγίσειςπου αντανακλούν τις σύγχρονες τάσεις της εκπαιδευτικής έρευνας. Υπό αυτήν την οπτική οι προαναφερθείσες αλληλεπιδράσεις επηρεάζουν τη διαδικασία σχεδιασμού και δόμησης της ενότητας.Λαμβάνοντας υπόψιν τα παραπάνω, η παρούσα διατριβή συνεισφέρει στην ερευνητική βιβλιογραφία που αφορά την επαγγελματική μάθηση των εκπαιδευτικών μέσα από την ανάπτυξη εκπαιδευτικού υλικού σε συνεργατικά πλαίσια για την εισαγωγή εννοιών σύγχρονων επιστημονικών αντικειμένων στη διδασκαλία των Φυσικών Επιστημών.
