School phobia will be diagnosed if the physician asks about school attendance in his patients with vague complaints but normal physical and laboratory findings. The immediate goal of treatment is to return the child to full school attendance. The long range goal is to improve the dependency problem. School phobia can often be prevented by proper anticipatory guidance regarding independence during well child exams.
