Quelle(s) image(s) tout locuteur francophone associe-t-il à la conjugaison ? Sans doute celle de ses souvenirs d’écolier où il lui a fallu apprendre par cœur des tables de conjugaison de verbes réguliers ou irréguliers, des terminaisons, ainsi qu’une terminologie spécifique, notamment celle du nom des temps : le futur antérieur, le passé composé, le présent de l’indicatif, etc. Imprégnés de cette expérience, les étudiants francophones de malgache ressentent donc bien souvent une forme de soulagement lorsque, dans les premières étapes de leur apprentissage, ils découvrent certains principes du système verbal de cette langue.

ЛЕКСИКО-СЕМАНТИЧНІ ТА ПРАГМАТИКО-СТИЛІСТИЧНІ ОСОБЛИВОСТІ ДІЄСЛІВ, ЩО ВВОДЯТЬ ПРЯМУ МОВУ, У ФРАНЦУЗЬКІЙ ПРЕСІ

У статті розглядаються лексичний, семантичний, прагматичний та стилістичний аспекти дієслів, що вводять пряму мову. Як показує дослідження, пряма мова у французькій публіцистичній пресі вводиться перехідними і неперехідними дієсловами, які в основному передбачають процес говоріння. Серед цих дієслів найчастіше вживається дієслово “dire”. Контекстуальними синонімами дієслова “dire” є: дієслова говоріння, які супроводжують мовленнєвий акт; дієслова, які вказують на особливості мовлення; фазові дієслова, які вказують на початок і кінець дії; ментальні дієслова, які вказують на розумову діяльність; дієслова, які не мають семи говоріння; дієслова фізичної дії; дієслова, які передають ставлення до слухача; дієслова, які вказують на психоемоційний стан особи під час мовлення. Вибір дієслова залежить від наміру автора, його оцінки прямої мови, що дозволяє йому вживати як нейтральні, так і експресивні дієслова, завдяки яким досягається перлокутивний ефект. Багато дієслів, що супроводжують пряму мову, мають у своєму значенні оцінний елемент та вживаються для досягнення стилістичного ефекту гіперболізації, з метою переконати читача. У статті підтверджено, що дієслово, яке супроводжує пряму мову, уживається переважно в теперішньому часі, подає найчастіше минулі події як об’єктивно реальні з погляду суб’єкта мовлення. Другою часовою формою за частотністю вживання є passé composé. Автор статті вважає, що вживання imparfait є одним зі стилістичних прийомів надання авторської оцінки. Під впливом екстралінгвістичних чинників imparfait зумовлює різну темпоральну семантику висловлювання. Futur simple уживається у значенні минулого часу, означає майбутні події в момент висловлювання, які стали на цей час минулими. Plus-que-parfait виконує функцію імпліцитного минулого часу, позначає закінчену дію на тлі теперішнього часу у прямій мові.

Recasts versus clarification requests: The relevance of linguistic target, proficiency, and communicative ability

This paper compares the effects of recasts and clarification requests as two implicit types of corrective feedback (CF) on learning two linguistic structures denoting past aspectual distinction in French, the passé composé and the imparfait. The participants in this classroom-based study are 52 high-school learners of French FL at a pre-intermediate level of proficiency (level B1 of CEFR). A distinctive feature of this study is the use of focused, context constrained communicative tasks in both treatment and tests. The paper specifically highlights the advantages of feedback using recasts for the acquisition of morpho-syntactically complex grammatical structures such as is the French passé composé. The study points to the participants’ communicative ability as an essential aspect of language proficiency, which seems to be crucial to bringing about the benefits of recasts. Oral communicative skill in a foreign language classroom is seen as a prerequisite for an appropriate interpretation and recognition of the corrective nature of recasts.

Coercion for the ages? A thousand years of parallel inchoative histories for the French passé simple and passé composé

This paper investigates the diachronic evolution of so-called aspectual coercion (de Swart 1998, Bary & Egg 2012) in French, with respect to two major tenses, namely the simple past (passé simple) (PS) and compound past (passé composé) (PC); it will more specifically bear on cases of inchoative readings. Throughout a study spanning several diachronic stages and capitalizing on earlier work (Caudal 2015a, Caudal 2015b, Caudal, Burnertt & Troberg 2016), it will be shown that the PC and the PS exhibit striking differences in their acquisition of inchoative coercions, with the PC consistently lagging behind the PS in some respects. Initially, at the Old French period, the PC was totally deprived of any coercive power w.r.t. states, whereas the PS already had a broader and better established inchoative coercive capability. But across subsequent stages of the language, the PS gradually increased its inchoative potential at a steady pace – although it seems to retain some difficulties with certain types of stative utterances, especially those denoting individual-level states, and locative/posture structures. While the PC has often been claimed to have largely replaced the PS, I will here show that even in Modern French, the PC seems to still have a noticeably lesser ‘inchoativizing power’ than the PS. In order words, in spite of nearly a thousand years of parallel evolution and semantic convergence, the initial semantic gap between the two forms still hasn’t been bridged. I will suggest that these consistent differences should lead us to consider so-called inchoative coercion as a distinctly conventionalized type of meaning expansion mechanism – rather than a simple matter of overcoming the violation of some aspectual semantic restriction.
