Arguing about social distancing and family relationships

With the COVID-19 pandemic, families are having to coordinate their behaviors to face new challenges, such as negotiating the social distancing measures that the family will or will not take in their daily interaction. This study utilizes Family Communication Patterns Theory to examine conversations that young adults reported having with their family members about social distancing measures and what factors predicted the outcomes of these disagreements. A family’s level of conversation orientation and the interaction of conversation orientation and conformity orientation predicted change in relational closeness due to the argument and the perceived positivity level of predicted outcome value levels for future interaction with these family members. Additionally, level of conformity orientation predicted perceived relational harm from disagreements about social distancing.

Conformity builds walls, conversation breaks walls: Actor-partner interdependence analysis on communication patterns and perceived political similarity in Hong Kong young adults and their parents

Recent research found that the effect of conversation orientation on political similarity was mediated by a downward influence from the parents to the children. Nevertheless, whether a parent's perceived political similarity is influenced by their children’s communication orientation remains an open question. The present study adopted the actor-partner interdependence modelling (APIM) to examine the reciprocal effects between Chinese young adults and their parents in Hong Kong. One-hundred and ninety-three parent-child dyads (Parents’ Mage = 52.80; Children’s Mage = 21.96) completed online surveys that measured family communication styles and perceived political similarity. We found that conversation orientation increased one’s own and partner’s perceived political similarity, whereas conformity orientation decreased one’s own but not partner’s perceived similarity. Our findings highlight the importance of viewing political socialization from a communication perspective. Open and candid communication is essential to facilitate the communication of political differences in the era of political polarization.

Conceptualizing and Validating Organizational Communication Patterns and Their Associations with Employee Outcomes

Using Ritchie and Fitzpatrick’s conceptualization of family communication patterns, we developed a scale of communication patterns within an organizational context. Three studies (total N = 877) were conducted to develop the new measurement and demonstrate its psychometric properties. The item generation (Study 1) and the exploratory factor analysis (Study 2) revealed that conformity had both positive and negative dimensions. The confirmatory factor analysis (Study 3) demonstrated the strength of the factor structure for the two dimensions of conformity and the conversation orientation. Results indicated that positive conformity and conversation orientations were positively related to constructive employee outcomes (e.g., organizational commitment and employee engagement) and negatively related to detrimental employee outcomes (e.g., turnover intentions and burnout). The negative conformity orientation demonstrated the opposite relationship to employee outcomes. Finally, regression analyses indicated that interaction effects occurred between the conformity dimensions and the conversation orientation for several employee outcomes.

Parent–Child Relationship Satisfaction: The Influence of Family Communication Orientations and Relational Maintenance Behaviors

This study examined emerging adults’ satisfaction with parent–child relationships as a function of family communication orientations and relational maintenance behaviors. Two hundred and eleven emerging adults completed measures assessing family communication orientations (conversation and conformity), relational maintenance behaviors (shared tasks, shared networks, positivity, openness, and assurances), and satisfaction with parent–child relationships. Results demonstrated that family conversation orientation and relational maintenance behaviors were positively associated with relationship satisfaction; family conformity orientation was not related to relationship satisfaction. Furthermore, findings indicated support for a model in which positivity and openness mediated the association between family conversation orientation and children’s satisfaction with parent–child relationships.

Pengaruh Keterampilan Sosial dan Pola Komunikasi Keluarga Terhadap Kecenderungan Adiksi Internet Pada Remaja Pengguna Smartphone

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengukur pengaruh keterampilan sosial (ekspresi emosi, sensitivitas emosional, ekspresi sosial, kepekaan sosial & kontrol sosial), pola komunikasi keluarga (conversation orientation & conformity orientation) dan variabel demografi (jenis kelamin, tingkat kelas dan lamanya waktu memiliki sebuah smartphone) terhadap kecenderungan kecanduan internet smartphone pada remaja. Sampel dari 200 siswa SMA di Jakarta Selatan dengan rentang usia 14-19 tahun diambil dengan teknik non-probability sampling. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ada pengaruh yang signifikan antara keterampilan sosial, pola komunikasi keluarga, variabel demografi terhadap adiksi internet. Hasil uji hipotesis minor menunjukkan bahwa tingkat kelas, lama kepemilikan smartphone, keterampilan kontrol emosi dan kontrol sosial sebagai prediktor signifikan untuk adiksi internet. Diskusi penting tentang adiksi internet dibahas dalam penelitian ini.

Family communication patterns of individuals with and without disabilities

The aim of this study was to compare family communication patterns among Iranian individuals with blindness, deafness and individuals with typically developing. The statistical population consisted of all Iranian individuals with blindness, deafness and individuals with typically developing in Shiraz, Iran. The sample consisted of 116 individuals (32 individuals with blindness, 21 individuals with deafness, and 63 individuals with typically developing). The Revised Family Communication Patterns scale was used for measuring the family communication patterns. Multivariate analysis of variance test were used for data analysis. The results showed that conversation orientation in individuals with typically developing were significantly higher than individuals with blindness and deafness (P<.001). Furthermore, conversation orientation in individuals with blindness was significantly higher than individuals with deafness (P<.001). Moreover, the findings showed that the conformity orientation in individuals with blindness and deafness were significantly higher than individuals with typically developing (P<.001). It should be noted that there was no significant difference among individuals with blindness and deafness in terms of conformity orientation. The results of the study indicated that reforming of family communication patterns is essential for individuals with blindness and deafness.

Relationship between family communication patterns with locus of control, self esteem, shyness and communication skills in adolescents

IntroductionThe purpose of this study was to investigation the relationship between the dimensions of Family communication patterns (conversation orientation and conformity orientation) with adolescents’ locus of control, self esteem, Shyness and communication patterns.MethodThe participant in this study includes 367 students (232 girls and 135 boys) of first and second graders in high school in the first region of Tehran, that were chosen by available sampling method and filled the Revised family communication patterns questionnaire (RFCP), Levenson locus of control scale (IPC), Rosenberg self esteem questionnaire, shyness questionnaire of Cheeck and Buss and communication skills questionnaire. Regression analysis was used to predict each of the criterion variables by Dimensions of family communication patterns.ResultThe regression analysis result revealed that the Family conversation orientation has a positive and significant relationship with internal locus of control, high self esteem and communication skills and predicts them positively. Also Family conformity orientation has a positive and significant relationship with external locus of control and shyness and predicts them positively. And has a significant negative relationship with self esteem and predicts it negatively.ConclusionThe finding of present research show that the families with conversation orientation, who have the free, comfortable and rich relationships as a need of joyful family life, lead to the formation of internal locus of control, higher self esteem, less shyness and more communication patterns in children in comparison with the families with conformity orientation.
