Abstract This study explores the political and cultural context of Fr. Gonzalo de Ocaña’s translation of the Homiliarum in Ezechielem of Pope Gregory I. It sheds light on the personality of the translator, offering new information about his life. It also delves into the political circumstances in which Queen María of Castile requested this translation from her chaplain. In fact, Ocaña’s prologue to his translation provides unique historical evidence of his own personal position vis-à-vis the political strife between the Queen’s brothers and her husband, John II of Castile, a struggle that had brought Castile close to ruin. The translation of this patristic text is also important because it provides us with a literal version of extensive passages from the Book of Ezequiel and constitutes the only known translation of this book of the Old Testament made from the Vulgata in the fifteenth century. Ocaña’s use of the Latin source is by no means a trivial issue, for the only two known versions of the Book of Ezekiel translated from Latin into Spanish, the pre-Alfonsine Bible and the General estoria, were prepared much earlier, in the thirteenth century.

This work wants to place chronologically the Greek or Latin works and authors mentioned in the First part of the General Estoria, and, at the same time, add some clarifications about the proper names of these writers, which, frequently, have come down to us in the work alfonsí with unrecognizable spellings. The journey to the afterlife is a fundamental theme of mythological origin and present in primitive religious thought. Of course, it was in the Middle Ages when writers again addressed the topic of the descent into hell. Although the journey to the underworld was frequently presented as the pilgrimage of a hero or an individual soul, it was also possible that the gods, oblivious to the world of shadows, entered there. Following this perspective, this article will analyze the descent into hell by three female visitors depicted in 13th-century Spanish literature. Thus, in the first place, I will present examples of testimonies created prior to the consolidation of the topic of descensus ad Inferos in the Middle Ages to identify the literary traditions that influenced the reworking of the theme. In the second part, I will describe the topic in three texts of Medieval Hispanic literature, by evoking the digression on Natura in the Libro de Alexandre (cc. 2325-2437), the miracle “De cómo Teófilo fizo carta con el diablo de su ánima et después fue convertido e salvo” from the Milagros de Nuestra Señora (cc.703-866) and the passage about Juno’s fury and revenge from Part Two of the General Estoria. Finally, it will be demonstrated how the episodes describing the descent into hell by Natura, Juno and the Virgin Mary follow a similar structure. Their entrance into Hell is justified by the attributes they possess as mediators.

"Continuities and Discontinuities in the Translations of Prepositional Phrases in Medieval Biblical Texts. In this work we present an analysis of prepositional phrases in two contemporary translations, Biblia prealfonsí and the biblical part of General Estoria 4, on the basis of the Book of Ecclesiasticus. The aim of this study is to describe the state of variation of prepositional phrases in 13th century, delineating the similarities and divergences of solutions, and also to try to elucidate how much interferes the original Latin text, Vulgata, in the use of the prepositional phrases.
