Epilogue

In 1921 San Francisco’s first investigation into an all-male sex ring on Baker Street ended with the exoneration of more than thirty men due to confusion around the exact definition of the word “fellatio,” since one could not legally be prosecuted of a crime that could not be clearly defined. In the same year, a Japanese “homo-sexual” appeared in a short story in the popular magazine Overland Monthly, signaling an additional projection of the city’s newest sexual curl onto Asians. In detailing how the “Oriental” became a key vehicle through which white men could forge same-sex sexuality, this chapter closes the book’s argument on how middle-class whites’ pursuit of their own self-fulfillment constructed Chinese and Japanese stereotypes.

Life on the Pacific Rim

Under Milicent Shinn’s editorship, The Overland Monthly helped create a Pacific consciousness, a knowledge on the part of western Americans that their world was at least equally a part of the Pacific as it was of the nation of the United States. Shinn was an anti-imperialist without being a white supremacist. She believed in a Pacific unity through cooperation, not militarism or trade. It is within this larger cultural historical context that the rise of Jack London must be placed. The stories that led to his acceptance in the Atlantic Monthly and then to his national prominence first appeared in an Overland Monthly heavily indebted to the editorial philosophy of Milicent Shinn.

The Honey-lips e The Guarany: os romances de José de Alencar em língua inglesa no final do século XIX

Nas últimas décadas do século XIX, dois romances de José de Alencar tiveram tradução e circulação em países de língua inglesa. Iraçéma: the honey-lips, em versão de Isabel Burton, foi publicada em 1886 em Londres e contou com recepção crítica em jornais do Reino Unido. The Guarany, traduzido por James William Hawes, saiu em forma seriada no ano de 1893 no jornal Overland Monthly and Out West Magazine, de São Francisco, nos Estados Unidos, país em que Alencar também foi referido pela imprensa local. Este trabalho se propõe a analisar as formas de recepção dessas obras e do nome de José de Alencar no Reino Unido e nos Estados Unidos. Objetiva ainda verificar o papel dos tradutores, editores, críticos e da imprensa na configuração da maneira como esse escritor foi avaliado e dado a ler, buscando considerar, sempre que possível, a relação desses intermediadores com a cultura brasileira. A recepção crítica de Alencar nesses países revela a boa avaliação desse escritor e a tradução de seus romances parece ter respondido a um interesse do público estrangeiro de se ilustrar.
