Social solidarity and cohesion in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic in intercultural cities

The study analyzes the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on intercultural interactions. It considers the sociocultural mechanisms for ensuring cohesion and social solidarity in multicultural communities. The paper highlights the social contexts of the current problems of multicultural communities in overcoming intercultural barriers and the development of trust, social solidarity and cohesion. It reveals the direction of the main negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the cohesion and development of social solidarity of multicultural communities. The successful international and domestic cases of counteraction of communities of intercultural cities against the COVID-19 pandemic are analyzed. The factors of development of social solidarity and cohesion of international and Ukrainian community in the conditions of pandemic are investigated. It has been found that social solidarity and cohesion of communities is an effective means of public counteraction to modern destructive factors and challenges. It is established that the communities of cities-participants of intercultural networks have developed effective mechanisms to maintain positive relations between people of different nationalities, religions, cultures and can serve as a positive example for other cities through the implementation of the model of ethnocultural diversity management.

The Significance of Community for Greek Australians Living in Diaspora

This paper will elucidate the importance of community and the significance of this for Greek Australians living in diaspora. It is based on a series of qualitative research projects undertaken by very experienced researchers, exemplifying both an emic and etic position relative to this diaspora population. Through the application of Narrative Ethnography, the lived experience of this population across the generations will be discussed. This experience will be further highlighted through the presentation of a profile of the Greek community in Melbourne illustrating the lived experience and community identity of its members. This will exemplify perceptions of what ‘community’, ‘community connections’ and ‘social connectedness’ mean to Greek Australians and allow the influence on their emotional health and wellbeing to be examined. This lived experience aims to show how a perception of Greekness influences health-related behavior, especially diet and nutrition, and creates a sense of wellbeing among members of the community. The findings of this study have wider implications for the understanding of the Greek experience in Australia and show the importance of community and the significance of cultural practices to overall psychological wellbeing. They also contribute to a wider knowledge base and will inform interventions intended to address well-being and health for members of the Greek population. This might be of assistance in policy making and meeting the health needs of multicultural communities more broadly. CROSS-CULTURAL COMMUNICATION OF CONCEPTS IN MODIAIN

Translation involves communication across languages and cultures. When one translates, s/he is involved in cross-cultural communication that is necessary in the current world scenario of globalization. English has been a global lingua franca that lubricates communication in the multilingual and multicultural communities. In this context, some Nepali novels have been translated into English, including Modiain that is the corpus of the present study. This study aims to explore and examine strategies used in translating cultural concepts (CCs) from Nepali into English. To achieve the set objective, I have employed corpus-based research design that uses parallel corpora consisting of Nepali-English pair of the selected novel. I investigated CCs in the original version and examined their translation counterparts in light of the set strategies such as translation by a more general term, a more neutral term, cultural substitution, loan terms, paraphrase, omission and illustration. The findings reveal that the use of the strategies poses pitfalls in transferring senses of the CCs across languages and cultures in one way or the other. This implies that the translators should be aware of the bilingual and bicultural sensitivities and sensibilities while translating CCs. Further implication of the study is that the course developers of applied linguistics, especially translation studies, should pay due attention while designing the courses towards the cross-cultural communicability of the CCs.CROSS-CULTURAL COMMUNICATION OF CONCEPTS IN MODIAIN

Planning parks for a multicultural population

As Toronto's population continues to grow increasingly diverse, park planners will be faced with the challenge of implementing changes to the existing parks and recreational facilities in order to accommodate the leisure needs of these new emerging demographics. This is due to the fact that the existing infrastructure does not meet the needs of these emerging groups. However, further research is needed to understand how emerging multicultural communities use park space and how they manipulate the use of existing infrastructure to accommodate their favoured activities. The research in this study is collected through conducting three focus groups, key informant interviews, and secondary research in regards to prevalent literature and municipal plans, policies, and staff reports regarding park planning. This study will have the capacity to assist planners in developing an understanding of how the changing urban population is using park spaces, as well as their recreational preferences and requirements, in order to adequately provide facilities that accommodate space for their specific needs.

KIAI DAN PENGEMBANGAN NILAI-NILAI MULTICULTURAL DI PONDOK PESANTREN AMANATUL UMMAH, PACET MOJOKERTO

Multikulturalisme sesungguhnya sangat dekat dengan Islam. Nilai-nilai multicultural berjalan beriringan dengan nilai-nilai ajaran Islam. Implementasi dan praktik multikulturalisme di dunia pendidikan Islam telah berjalan dalam kehidupan alamiah masyarakat pesantren. Namun, multikulturalisme di pesantren tidak dapat dipisahkan dari peran serta seorang kiai sebagai pimpinan tertinggi. Tulisan ini mengungkap nilai multikultural yang terdapat dalam kehidupan alamiah masyarakat pesantren; ketika santri belajar, di asrama, mengaji, ketika santri makan, shalat, membaca wirid dan sebagainya. Selain itu, tulisan ini mengungkap keberadaan sosok kiai yang menjadi aktor dibalik berkembangnya nilai multikultural. Nilai-nilai multicultural diungkap dengan menelisik kehidupan sehari-hari santri, yang dalam pembumian nilai-nilai multicultural berjalan dengan alami. Dibalik itu semua, terdapat pola atau model yang dikembangkan oleh kiai yaitu; membentuk komunitas multicultural menghindari konflik sectarian menumbuhkan Islam moderat dan menangkal ideologi radikal.Kata Kunci: Kiai, Pondok Pesantren, Nilai-nilai Multikultural Multiculturalism is highly relevant to Islam. Multicultural values go alongside Islamic values. The implementation and practice of multiculturalism in Islamic education has been running in the natural life of the pesantren community. However, multiculturalism in pesantren cannot be separated from the participation of a kiai as the highest leader. This paper reveals the multicultural values found in the natural life of the pesantren community; when the students study, in the dormitory, the Koran, when they eat, pray, read wirid and so on. In addition, this paper reveals the existence of a kiai figure who is the actor behind the development of multicultural values. Multicultural values are revealed by examining the daily life of students, which in the grounding of multicultural values runs naturally. Behind all that, there are patterns or models developed by the kiai, namely; building multicultural communities — avoiding sectarian conflicts — fostering moderate Islam and countering radical ideologies.Keywords: Kiai, Islamic Boarding School, Multicultural Values

The role of a foreign accent in the social and personal identification of a speaker

The intensification of migration processes in Europe necessitates studying the foreign accent as a means of social and personal diagnostics within multicultural communities in the light of the increased number of cases of the “accent-based” discrimination, since the foreign accent is perceived negatively by native speakers and causes less confidence in a speaker. Studies carried out in recent decades suggest that external signs are gradually losing their leading role in social identification, giving way to more reliable and objective means – pronunciation characteristics, since they are practically impossible to control. For this reason, an experimental phonetic research was carried out on the material of the German language in order to identify the nature of the influence of accentedness on the social identification of Russian-speaking immigrants from the position of German native speakers, as well as to determine the acceptation limits of accentedness degree of Russian-speaking bilinguals. With regard to the results of the study, it was found that a strong accent negatively affects the overall assessment of an individual in terms of the educational level, income and success of a speaker, while in terms of personal characteristics there is no pronounced negative attitude towards people speaking with a Russian accent, regardless of the degree of accentedness.

Antenatal Appointment Invitations: Getting the Message Across

In line with the Universal Health Visiting Pathway in Scotland, health visitors offer all expectant mothers a pre-birth visit in an antenatal letter. The town of Kirkcaldy on the east coast of Scotland has a diverse community and faced low uptake of antenatal visits (50%), with antenatal letters only sent in the English language. This article outlines how the team undertook to improve uptake of antenatal visits and understanding of the health visiting service through accessible language in the antenatal letter. Providing the letter in the expectant mother's native language improved uptake of the antenatal contact and increased understanding of the health visitor role. It is concluded that it is important to be inclusive and to provide equality of service for multicultural communities, in order to improve outcomes for all children.
