In medical-psychology, schizophrenia is defined as a severe psychotic disorder that causes its sufferers to experience hallucinations and chaotic behaviors. However, the paradigm of schizoanalysis considers schizophrenia as a system of thought that opposes the existence of established discourses (i.e. the Oedipus System). One form of schizophrenia can be seen in the Joker movie (2019). This research aims to identify the schizophrenia suffered by Arthur Fleck, the movie’s main character, from the schizoanalysis perspective as proposed by Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari. This qualitative research applied the interpretative description method based on the schizoanalysis perspective. This research found that the Joker character, as a schizophrenic, successfully reconstructs established ideas in his own ways solely through his desires. Joker unleashes his desires through practices presented as a form of resistance to the established system in Gotham City. This “madness” character was displayed by Arthur Fleck who opposes prevailing social values and norms, which he had previously imagined and questioned. However, he ends up destroying a greater system or order. Joker, as a progressive and revolutionary schizophrenic subject, clearly shows how a person can deconstruct the Oedipus to turn it into a counter-ammunition. Furthermore, the movie also shows that the broader “Joker movement” is disorganized as much as it is unplanned, spontaneous, and creative. Such spontaneity and creativity generates the flow of energy which stimulates those demonstrators to take a fight against capitalism.

ABSTRACT Todd Phillips’ Joker (2019) is the latest cinematic portrayal of the notorious clown prince of Gotham City. Although the previous film adaptations would usually picture him as a villain to Batman’s hero, this version depicts him as a lonely man who has to cope with depression and struggles to be accepted by and fit in the society. Therefore, this version of the character carries a marked aura of socio-political consciousness. The present paper aims to analyze Todd Phillips’ Joker through the lens of the carnival ritual as put forward by Mikhail Bakhtin. The paper will discuss different carnivalesque elements present in Joker, and illustrate how the movie takes full advantage of them to mount an attack against the prevalent, official culture of Gotham. Moreover, it will argue how Joker forms a utopian condition where the constant anarchy results in freedom.

Batman villains are a staple fascination within the franchise's fandom, and music is a powerful tool utilized in allowing fans to experience these characters in an emotionally connected way when viewing live adaptations of them. This chapter examines the appeal of Batman villain narratives, explores how composers scored music for ten selected Gotham City antagonists spanning seven live-action Batman films, and discusses fans' reaction to those scores during a survey conducted by the author involving 55 voluntary participants. These explorations contribute to furthering dialogues on the cultural relevance of comic books in contemporary society, fans' fascination with villain narratives, film scores' function as a representation of on-screen personalities, and music's role in establishing relationships between fan audiences and on-screen characters.
