Formerly, the New York City Opera was a radiant and seemingly essential part of theintellectual life of New York. Yet the possibility of reviving the business has somehowappeared more doubtful with each passing month since its closure, two and a half years ago.A huge chunk of its viewers has already left years before City Opera filed for bankruptcy in2013, and they definitely don't appear at the Met, which has its own difficulties filling seats.Only because, as so many in the company argue, New York should support two existing operacompanies, does not actually mean that it has to.
