Margaret Mead o la dificultad de ser una mujer genial al comienzo de la modernidad.

En este artículo se pasa revisión a la vida y obra de Margaret Mead, tal vez la primera mujer que defendió que los “roles sexuales” (lo que ahora entendemos por “género”) no estaban determinados biológicamente sino construidos culturalmente. En el texto se argumenta que existen contradicciones y confusiones en su trabajo, derivados de las que caracterizaron su propia vida personal. Porque a pesar de defender teóricamente la construcción cultural del género, la enorme presión del orden patriarcal de comienzos del siglo XX no debió permitirle internalizar que realmente se podía ser una persona individualizada e inteligente si se era una mujer, lo que la llevó a construir un mito sobre ella misma que ponía en el centro su supuesta tendencia maternal, que vendría a demostrar inapelablemente que era mujer y no hombre. No solo su hija contradijo el carácter maternal de su madre, sino que el propio argumento, propio del orden patriarcal, hacía derivar del sexo actitudes y comportamientos (el carácter maternal de las mujeres), contradiciendo así la argumentación teórica por la que se hizo famosa.

Writing Anthropologists, Sounding Primitives: The Poetry and Scholarship of Edward Sapir, Margaret Mead, and Ruth Benedict

Writing Anthropologists, Sounding Primitives re-examines the poetry and scholarship of three of the foremost figures in the twentieth-century history of U.S.-American anthropology: Edward Sapir, Margaret Mead, and Ruth Benedict. While they are widely renowned for their contributions to Franz Boas’s early twentieth-century school of cultural relativism, what is far less known is their shared interest in probing the representational potential of different media and forms of writing. This dimension of their work is manifest in Sapir’s critical writing on music and literature and Mead’s groundbreaking work with photography and film. Sapir, Mead, and Benedict together also wrote more than one thousand poems, which in turn negotiate their own media status and rivalry with other forms of representation. A. Elisabeth Reichel presents the first sustained study of the published and unpublished poetry of Sapir, Mead, and Benedict, charting this largely unexplored body of work and relevant selections of the writers’ scholarship. In addition to its expansion of early twentieth-century literary canons, Writing Anthropologists, Sounding Primitives contributes to current debates about the relations between different media, sign systems, and modes of sense perception in literature and other media. Reichel offers a unique contribution to the history of anthropology by synthesizing and applying insights from the history of writing, sound studies, and intermediality studies to poetry and scholarship produced by noted early twentieth-century U.S.-American cultural anthropologists.

Teza /cel artykułu – Opieranie swojej wiedzy dotyczącej użytkownika biblioteki na dość powszechnie stosowanych badaniach ankietowych lub wywiadach standaryzowanych w wielu przypadkach nie daje pełnej wiedzy o jego prawdziwych intencjach i potrzebach. Według antropolożki Margaret Mead „To co ludzie mówią, to, co robią, i to, co mówią, że robią, to trzy całkowicie różne rzeczy”. Artykuł prezentuje techniki UX, za pomocą których udaje się poznać niewidoczne i niewypowiedziane potrzeby użytkowników oraz stawia pytania o możliwość zaimplementowania takich badań w Polsce. Metody badań – Dokonano analizy literatury anglojęzycznej i polskiej w zakresie UX z ostatnich 10 lat, odwołując się również do starszych publikacji z zakresu etnologii i antropologii, które to dziedziny, jak wykazano, mają zasadniczy związek z badaniami jakościowymi. Kwerenda wykazała, że tematyka UX w kontekście bibliotek pojawia się głównie w badaniach dotyczących instytucji zagranicznych, a w Polsce jedynie sporadycznie. Na podstawie źródeł przedstawiono przegląd technik UX w ujęciu pojęciowym wraz z przykładami. Przemyślenia poparto własnym doświadczeniem pozyskanym podczas warsztatów UXLibs w Sheffield w 2018 roku. Wyniki i wnioski – Przedstawione techniki sprawdzają się w badaniach bibliotek na świecie, a uzyskane w ten sposób dane mogą być doskonałym uzupełnieniem badań ilościowych, do tej pory przeważających w polskich bibliotekach.

A simplicidade, também, constrói culturas e distingue a personalidade social entre gêneros

Qual é o papel do homem e qual é o papel da mulher numa sociedade? Que comportamentos esperamos e desejamos que um homem e uma mulher apresentem? Qual ou quais comportamentos seriam apropriados a ambos? Deveriam estes comportamentos serem, desejavelmente, distintos devido às diferenças entre os gêneros? Partindo dessas questões, meu propósito é resenhar a grande obra Sexo e Temperamento em Três Sociedades Primitivas (1969), escrita pela antropóloga norte-americana Margaret Mead (1901-1978), no qual a autora traz a ideia da simplicidade com que o homem constrói sua cultura e como essa cultura pode enredar segurança e compreensão sobre os papeis dos homens e das mulheres.

For 50 years, Margaret Mead told Americans how cultures worked, and Americans listened. While serving as a curator at the American Museum of Natural History and as a professor of anthropology at Columbia University, she published dozens of books and hundreds of articles, scholarly and popular, on topics ranging from adolescence to atomic energy, Polynesian kinship networks to kindergarten, national morale to marijuana. At her death in 1978, she was the most famous anthropologist in the world and one of the best-known women in America. She had amply achieved her goal, as she described it to an interviewer in 1975, “To have lived long enough to be of some use.” As befits her prominence, Mead has had many biographers, but there is a curious hole at the center of these accounts: Mead’s faith. Margaret Mead: A Twentieth-Century Faith introduces a side of its famous subject that few people know. It re-narrates her life and reinterprets her work, highlighting religious concerns. Following Mead’s lead, it ranges across areas that are often kept academically distinct: anthropology, gender studies, intellectual history, church history, and theology. It is a portrait of a mind at work, pursuing a unique vision of the good of the world.

Mead reached her largest audience through her monthly column in Redbook magazine, which ran from 1962 to Mead’s death in 1978. Examining the Redbook columns gives a good sense of Mead’s spiritual life and social ethics in her prime years. Religion was not a major theme in the columns, but it cropped up in surprising ways. The Redbook pieces also shed light on Mead’s relationship with Rhoda Metraux, who co-authored them and edited the three book collections drawn from the columns. Additionally, looking at the letters Mead received during these years shows the impact she had on her audience. By 1970, she was getting fifteen pounds of mail every day. People believed that they knew her through her media presence, and they trusted her enough to ask her practically anything. In some ways, she came to function almost as a clergywoman, making prophetic pronouncements, receiving confessions, and dispensing pastoral advice. Ironically, she came only late and reluctantly to acceptance of the idea that women could be clergy, and the slow evolution of her thinking on this subject is most clearly seen in one of the Redbook columns.

Identidad, Juventud y Crisis: el concepto de crisis en las teorías sobre la juventud

El artículo se propone reconstruir algunas narrativas teóricas sobre la juventud, articuladas en torno al concepto de crisis. Para ello, repasa las aportaciones de cinco autores del siglo XX, provenientes de distintas disciplinas, escuelas teóricas y coyunturas de crisis: Erik H. Erikson (1968) y su teoría sobre la juventud como “crisis normativa”; Stanley G. Hall (1904) y su teoría sobre la adolescencia como fase de “tempestad y estímulo”; Antonio Gramsci (1929-31) y su teoría sobre juventud, hegemonía y crisis de autoridad; Margaret Mead (1970) y su teoría sobre la capacidad prefigurativa de la crisis juvenil; Dick Hebdige (1979) y su teoría sobre el punk como metáfora de la crisis. El artículo concluye preguntándose qué elementos de estas teorías deben descartarse y cuáles pueden rescatarse, para comprender la metamorfosis de la condición juvenil tras las secuelas de la última crisis y para diseñar políticas públicas y privadas más efectivas para enfrentarla. El texto incorpora un postscriptum sobre la crisis del coronavirus.
