The Business of Digital News

In news organizations today, editorial strategy is business strategy. The two are entirely intertwined. Understanding either requires studying both. With the shift to digital, the process of publishing the news has transitioned from a series of loosely coupled, sequential, and periodic production tasks to a set of complex, overlapping, and stochastic outputs requiring significant alignment and coordination to succeed. For journalists, these changes are challenging newsroom norms and driving an embrace of human-centered design practices and product thinking. For academics it is an opportunity to study the remaking of organizational roles and relationships in the business of digital news, an effort that is still in its infancy.

Law Enforcement Organization Relationships with Prosecutors

Although police departments and prosecutor’s offices must closely collaborate, their organizational roles and networks, and the distinctive perspectives of their personnel, will inevitably and regularly lead to forceful dialogue and disruptive friction. Such friction can occasionally undermine thoughtful deliberation about public safety, the rule of law, and community values. Viewed more broadly, however, these interactions promote just such deliberation, which will become even healthier when the dialogue breaks out of the closed world of criminal justice bureaucracies and includes the public to which these bureaucracies are ultimately responsible. This chapter explores such organizational interactions and their value.

Career Outcomes for Master’s-Level Industrial-Organizational Psychologists

This chapter provides those considering earning a master’s degree in industrial-organizational (I-O) psychology with information about the type of job opportunities available after graduation. Common occupational titles, organizational roles, and salary ranges are identified for both recent I-O graduates and those later in their careers. Job positions reflect a broad range of roles and include talent management, data analytics, human resources, organization development, and consulting. Graduates of I-O psychology master’s programs are primarily working in jobs related to their I-O degree and overwhelming perceive their I-O degree to be valuable. I-O master’s alumni report a high level of career satisfaction and perceive that their I-O skills are highly valued by employers.

Organizing professional work and services through institutional complexity – how institutional logics and differences in organizational roles matter

How is the complexity of contemporary professional work and services organized differently by management at the strategic level and professionals at the operational level? And what are the implications for managing this complexity? Drawing on literatures on institutional complexity, organizational roles and the analyses of case study data from interviews, observations and documents at a large public service provider in Norway, this article advances the understanding of management in complex organizations and makes the following three contributions to the institutional logics literature. First, we show how multiple institutional logics have different functions at strategic and operational levels, resembling a dynamic interplay in organizing professional work and services. Second, we show how these differences in handling multiple logics are contingent upon the different roles of the strategic managers and operational professionals. Finally, we advance the understanding of what institutional complexity may involve in organizations by disclosing how the significant conflicts stem not only from the presence of multiple logics, but also from differences within the organizations in how multiple logics are handled. Our findings have implications for the planning and management of organizational design and implementation strategies and demonstrate the utility of the institutional complexity perspective for managing complexity in contemporary organizations.

Shared leadership: Struggles over meaning in daily instances of uncertainty

Research presented in this article advances existing work on shared leadership and organizational sensemaking by an empirical demonstration of the organizing properties of leadership in daily instances of uncertainty. Drawing on conversation analysis combined with ethnographic data collected during 12-month fieldwork, this article spells out the conversational mechanisms and discursive practices used by leadership actors in the process of sensemaking directed towards organizationally relevant goals. Through a fine-grain analysis of an extended troubles-telling sequence in a particular meeting encounter, this study shows how conversation analysis–inspired research can be used to add a more nuanced understanding of a substantive area of social life, such as shared leadership which is achieved in interaction and which involves various leadership actors, regardless of their hierarchical positions and organizational roles.

Relationship between Gender and Stress among the Staff Members of Educational Institutions

Stress is a topical subject. It has assumed great significance in the present day world. Today, modern man is afflicted with stresses of various kinds. The origin of these stresses may be found in several types of frustrations, conflicts or pressures of the modern day life pattern. As the stress may emanate from either of these roots, personal experiences of stress differ. Role is the expectation of works from a person in respect of the social system and his own expectations. For better results the role has to be evaluated, shared with others and if these role expectations conflict with each other, it creates stress in role’s position. Researchers working on the increasing complexity of organizations have recognized the potential of conflict and stress in the performance of organizational roles. This paper is an effort by the researcher to know about the link relationship of gender and level of stress in staff members of educational institutions.
