Sulfur monoxide dimer chemistry as a possible source of polysulfur in the upper atmosphere of Venus

The abundance of SO dimers (SO)2 in the upper atmosphere of Venus and their implications for the enigmatic ultraviolet absorption has been investigated in several studies over the past few years. However, the photochemistry of sulfur species in the upper atmosphere of Venus is still not well understood and the identity of the missing ultraviolet absorber(s) remains unknown. Here we update an existing photochemical model of Venus’ upper atmosphere by including the photochemistry of SO dimers. Although the spectral absorption profile of SO dimers fits the unknown absorber, their abundance is found to be too low for them to contribute significantly to the absorption. It is more likely that their photolysis and/or reaction products could contribute more substantively. Reactions of SO dimers are found to be important sources of S2O, and possibly higher order SnO species and polysulfur, Sn. All of these species absorb in the critical ultraviolet region and are expected to be found in both the aerosol and gas phase. indicating that in-situ high resolution aerosol mass spectrometry might be a useful technique for identifying the ultraviolet absorber on Venus.

ANALYSIS OF METHODS FOR CAPTURING SULFUR-CONTAINING COMPOUNDS IN FLUE GASES FROM POWER BOILERS

The article discusses the main methods of capturing sulfur oxides in flue gases that are applicable at modern thermal power plants. The main products formed when burning organic fuel at thermal power plants are also considered.As a result of the oxidative reaction, the sulfur in organic fuel is converted into sulfur oxide; sulfur monoxide (SO), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and sulfur trioxide (SO3) are mostly formed. When released into the atmosphere with flue gases, these compounds have a negative impact not only on the elements of the heating unit, but also on the human body, flora and fauna. The conclusions present the main advantages and disadvantages of each method.

Molecule-dependent oxygen isotopic ratios in the coma of comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko

ABSTRACT The ratios of the three stable oxygen isotopes 16O, 17O, and 18O on the Earth and, as far as we know in the Solar system, show variations on the order of a few per cent at most, with a few outliers in meteorites. However, in the interstellar medium there are some highly fractionated oxygen isotopic ratios in some specific molecules. The goal of this work is to investigate the oxygen isotopic ratios in different volatile molecules found in the coma of comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko and compare them with findings from interstellar clouds in order to assess commonalities and differences. To accomplish this goal, we analysed data from the ROSINA instrument on Rosetta during its mission around the comet. 16O/18O ratios could be determined for O2, methanol, formaldehyde, carbonyl sulfide, and sulfur monoxide/dioxide. For O2 the 16O/17O ratio is also available. Some ratios are strongly enriched in the heavy isotopes, especially for sulfur-bearing molecules and formaldehyde, whereas for methanol the ratios are compatible with the ones in the Solar system. O2 falls in-between, but its oxygen isotopic ratios clearly differ from water, which likely rules out an origin of O2 from water, be it by radiolysis, dismutation during sublimation, or the Eley–Rideal process from water ions hitting the nucleus as postulated in the literature.
