The figurativeness of the language of St. Teresa of Ávila

This paper aims at analyzing The Interior Castle of St. Teresa of Ávila using a stylistic approach. The Interior Castle was inspired by the author’s vision of the soul as a diamond in the shape of a castle containing seven mansions, which she interpreted as the journey of faith through seven stages, ending with union with God. The stylistic analysis of the chosen text combines intuition and detailed linguistic analysis of the text. The form and style of the text are an integral part of the work’s meaning and value. In our analysis of The Interior Castle, lexical and syntactical expressive means and stylistic devices are discussed in order to explore the figurative meanings of the language employed.

The intentionality of the imagination in St. Teresa of Ávila

This paper pretends to make a brief incursion into the teachings of Saint Teresa of Ávila (1515–1582) about the imagination throughout her four main writings: The Life, The Way of Perfection, The Interior Castle and The Book of the Foundations. Firstly, it offers a terminological clarification. Secondly, it presents the Teresian semantics of the terms.

Meditating on the Meditations

A common thread runs through Descartes’ First Meditation, the opening part of Teresa of Ávila’s Interior Castle, and al-Ghazālī’s intellectual autobiography The Deliverer from Error. For spiritual and intellectual progress to occur, each of these authors concurs, one must first divest oneself of previously held certainties, even though evil deceivers will try to assault and halt this process. But what could explain the similarities between the three presentations? And are there philosophical lessons to draw from such comparisons, or are al-Ghazālī’s and Teresa’s meditations destined to remain curiosities and marginal as compared to Descartes’? In this article, I show how al-Ghazālī’s use of the same trope twice can point to a fresh consideration of the relation between Teresa and Descartes.

What about the Interior Castle? Response to Ienca's and Andorno's New Human Rights in the Age of Neuroscience and Neurotechnology

Odpowiedź na propozycję Ienca i Andorno dotyczącą nowych praw człowieka w erze neuronauki i neurotechnologii Zaproponowane przez Ineca i Andorno, w artykule „Towards new human rights in the age of neuroscience and neurotechnology”, trzy nowe prawa człowieka na pierwszy rzut oka wydają się niezwykle atrakcyjną odpowiedzią na rosnące ze strony neuronauki zagrożenia dla ludzkiej wolności. Jednakże ich głębsza analiza, zwłaszcza w kontekście zasad systemu ochrony praw człowieka Rady Europy, wraz z jego kamieniem węgielnym – przyrodzoną ludzką godnością, ujawnia szereg poważnych wątpliwości. Najpoważniejsza z nich dotyczy możliwości pogodzenia stojącej u podstaw neuronauki i neurotechnologii filozofii, wraz z milcząco przyjmowaną w ramach niej wizją człowieka, z filozofią praw człowieka i jej antropologią. Druga, bardziej szczegółowa, lecz równie istotna z punktu widzenia systemu wartości demokratycznego państwa prawnego, wątpliwość dotyczy kwestii pogodzenia nieterapeutycznych ingerencji w „wewnętrzną twierdzę” jednostki – mózg wraz z nadbudowanym nad nim umysłem – z obowiązkiem poszanowania i zabezpieczenia przez państwo prawa do wolności myśli, sumienia i religii, rozumianego zarówno jako fundamentalne prawo człowieka, jak i konstytutywny element systemu wartości demokratycznego państwa prawnego.
