The recognizable formal structure of tommy orange's there there and its familiar revelations about indigenous american life, as much as the components distinguishing the novel from other Native-authored works that share its concerns, have propelled it to the center of conversations about contemporary Native literature. Yet the excitement about the arrival of a new, talented writer has obscured There There's roots in American Indian literary history, especially its affiliations with novels by other Native authors. As the numerous images of characters in mirrors and other reflective surfaces suggest, Orange establishes Indigenous people looking at Indigenous people, and Indigenous authors looking at Indigenous authors, as foundational to the novel's form. There There reflects the work of many other Native fiction writers, most prominently Sherman Alexie, but also James Welch, N. Scott Momaday, and David Treuer, among others. He evokes the formal features of many of Louise Erdrich's novels, too, but unlike Erdrich, Orange leaves readers with the overwhelming impression of irrevocably damaged Indigenous communities with dismal prospects for breaking cycles of violence and trauma.

Abstract Vi Hilbert, collector, performer and activist who worked with the folklore material of the northwestern region, has found somebody to follow in her footsteps in the promotion of the local culture and literature. This somebody is Sherman Alexie, a writer, publicist, poet and scriptwriter who has published around 30 books to date. Like Vi Hilbert, Sherman Alexie, who is three generations younger, proclaims his Native American heritage. He represents it and helps other readers and interested people understand, or join the path towards building this identity. His texts are characterised by a humorous distance as well as an excellent gift of observation. Alexie is one of the most significant figures of the literature of the indigenous Americans and is a textbook example of a new type of narration, which has deep roots in this region and is nurtured. His early works were a great surprise at the time of their publication, both for readers from the Native American community and other Americans. From an ethnological point of view, they are not only a factual source of knowledge, but also provide a perspective for evaluating the culture emically.

This paper discusses the contribution that reading a short story written by Native American author Sherman Alexie makes in the multicultural education. The story discussed is “This is What it Means to Say Phoenix, Arizona,” which displays cultural conflicts between Native Americans and Americans within the two main characters. In the discussion, the way such cultural conflicts are presented will be highlighted in terms of representing similar situations which can be reflected by students as individuals with multicultural identities. Cultural perceptions on the story will be discussed using the concept of multiculturalism as proposed by Menand (1995) and Native American literature by Parker (2004). Students’ perceptions on multiculturalism shown in this paper are taken from the students’ papers discussing multiculturalism, which are a required final assignment for the FSIP course. This paper will then have its proposed final conclusion that in compromising multicultural identities, a strategy of tug and let loose is needed.
