The Making of Homo Socialist: The Discursive Analysis of the Ideological Production of Class in China, 1949–1976

Based on a critique of the history project titled “Oral History of Peasants’ Ordinary Life in the Revolutionary Era of China,” this article provides an analysis of class ideology production from Land Reform Movement to the Cultural Revolution in China. Thirty years of socialist construction in China was based on the craft of making the Homo Socialist. The focus here is on how personal experiences were transformed into state-endorsed conduct via the discourse of class and class struggle. Over the course of the sociopolitical transformations leading to the Cultural Revolution, “class” changed from a socioeconomic designation to a political behavioral metaphor, and in the end a purely symbolic gesture; personal experiences were transformed from hallmarks of class privilege to virtual identification with imagined class struggle. And the peasants went from being “owners of bitterness” to “debtors of bitterness” on the way to becoming “sinners of the revolution”—who gradually submitted themselves to the regime in the name of revolution, liberation, and redemption. These transformations were realized through discursive practices connecting personally embodied experiences with the abstract Marxist theory of class and class struggle. Examining the shifting nature of class ideology production helps to explain how the Chinese Communist Party understood the effects of its governance and how people found class ideology meaningful to them, even when it reached the point of absurdity.

Peculiarities of Voice, Intonation and Speech Tone of the Actor in the Role

The purpose of the article is to study the peculiarities of the voice work during the role of the actor by studying the main aspects of the speech act implementation, the work of the registers and the speech apparatus; to carry out a comparative analysis of different types of the actor’s existence in the role and reading of the literary text. The research methodology is based on the main principles of the actor’s speech tools, the definition and comparison of different methods of voice, support, breathing, and the use of basic actor’s techniques in the process of reading a literary text by separating and embodying them during the actor’s speech act. The scientific novelty of the research is to study the main aspects of existence during artistic reading and the use of non-standard for acting voice techniques, interpreting them for use during the role. Identification of new approaches to the implementation of speech, the creative act and the latest ways to express the psycho-emotional state of the character through the use of unusual principles of the speech apparatus in ordinary life situations. Conclusions. The results of studies identify the basic principles of the human speech apparatus and the problems of voice control during the arousal of the psycho-emotional condition of the actor in the role, problems and errors in various methods and scientific works of masters in the field of stage language. Through experiments and interpretations of various approaches to working with voice, new, universal methods of speech control have been borrowed, borrowed by studying the process of reading a literary text by actors and applying these principles to the role.

Stability and Change in Everyday Knowledge: From Taken for Granted to Social Representation

What do we talk about when we talk about everyday life? This chapter considers everyday life as a “metasystem” in Moscovici’s terms, a normative system that checks and organizes knowledge and thought. Looking at social representations theory, the chapter considers the structuring power of this metasystem, referring to two kinds of research where the absence (for deprived children) or suspension (in the first COVID-19 lockdown in Italy) of everyday life causes delays in children’s development and dismay in adults. The suspension of ordinary life highlights the social representation of “normality.” The structure of the “everyday life” metasystem is largely taken for granted, and this calls into question the relationship between the taken-for-granted and the knowledge that constructs social representations or, in other words, between stability and change in common knowledge.

Long-term survival of a patient with diffuse midline glioma in the pineal region: A case report and literature review

Background: Diffuse midline glioma (DMG) is an invasive astrocytic tumor arisen from midline structures, such as the pons and thalamus. Five cases of DMG in the pineal region have been reported, but the clinical course was poor; there was no case of survival for more than 2 years. Case Description: We report the case of a 12-year-old boy with DMG in the pineal region who is living a normal daily life for more than 6 years following multimodal treatment. He complained of a headache accompanied by vomiting that had gradually worsened 1 month previously, and initial magnetic resonance imaging revealed a pineal tumor. Germinoma was initially suspected; however, a combination of chemotherapy using carboplatin and etoposide was ineffective. The first surgery was performed through the left occipital transtentorial approach (OTA); the diagnosis was DMG. After 60 Gy radiotherapy concomitant with temozolomide (TMZ), the tumor enlarged. Second surgery was performed through bilateral OTAs, and 90% of the tumor was removed. In addition, stereotactic radiotherapy (30 Gy, six fractions) was administered, and the local equivalent dose in 2 Gy/fraction reached 97.5 Gy. Maintenance chemotherapy using TMZ and bevacizumab was continued for 2 years. After finishing chemotherapy, the enhancing lesion enlarged again, and bevacizumab monotherapy was effective. Now, at 6 years after diagnosis, the patient leads an ordinary life as a student. Conclusion: Maximum resection and high-dose radiotherapy followed by bevacizumab may have been effective in the present case.

COVID-19 Vaccination: The Mainspring of Challenges and the Seed of Remonstrance

As of March 2020, the time when the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) became a pandemic, our existence has been threatened and the lives of millions have been claimed. With this ongoing global issue, vaccines are considered of paramount importance in curtailing the outbreak and probably a prime gamble to bring us back to ‘ordinary life’. To date, more than 200 vaccine candidates have been produced, many of which were approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for emergency use, with the research and discovery phase of their production process passed over. Capering such a chief practice in COVID-19 vaccine development, and manufacturing vaccines at an unprecedented speed brought many challenges into play and raised COVID-19 vaccine remonstrance. In this review, we highlight relevant challenges to global COVID-19 vaccine development, dissemination, and deployment, particularly at the level of large-scale production and distribution. We also delineate public perception on COVID-19 vaccination and outline the main facets affecting people’s willingness to get vaccinated.

How Our Minds Are Made Up

This chapter argues that epistemic dependence is a routine and rational part of ordinary life. It focuses on implicit deference, in particular deferring to others to learn what we should, or even already do, believe. Using the example of “never Trumpers”—Republicans who abjured Donald Trump but often came to embrace him—it argues that our belief representations are surprisingly fragile, because we rely on others and on the world to tell us what we believe. In this light, it argues, we should be less concerned than is sometimes thought by ordinary people’s ignorance about important questions: what matters is not whether they know, but whether they know how to find out.
