New structures of the Milky Way stellar and dark halos revealed from the Subaru/Hyper Suprime-Cam survey

We present the recent discovery of new halo structures in the Milky Way (MW) based on the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Subaru Strategic Program (SSP). HSC is a wide-field imager installed at the prime focus of the Subaru Telescope, and a 300-night survey with this instrument is being carried out in this program. The combination of the superb image quality and depth and the fact that it is a multi-band survey allows us to identify new faint satellites as well as field halo stars in the outskirts of the MW halo beyond the reach of previous surveys. We report here on the new insights into the nature of both stellar and dark halos in the MW as revealed from this on-going survey program and show prospects based on the upcoming large spectroscopic survey with Subaru Prime Focus Spectrograph.

Is the massive star cluster Westerlund 2 double? - A high resolution multi-band survey with the Hubble Space Telescope

Westerlund 2 (Wd2) is one of the most massive young star clusters known in the Milky Way. The close proximity (4.16 kpc) to the Sun, and the young age (2.0 Myr) allow us to study star formation in detail at a high spatial resolution. We present results from our recent deep multi-band survey in the optical and near-infrared obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope. We demonstrated that, as expected, the region is affected by significant differential reddening with a median value of E(B − V)g = 1.87 mag. The distance was inferred from the dereddened color-magnitude diagrams using Padova isochrones. Analyzing the spatial distribution of stars we found that Wd2 consists of two sub-clumps, namely the main cluster of Westerlund 2 and a less well populated clump located to the North. We estimated the same age of 0.1–2.0 Myr for both sub-clumps, thus we conclude that they are likely coeval.

TRIENNIAL REPORT

This triennium has seen progress in a number of directions related to Commission 20 objectives. Foremost, the growth in the number of astrometric observations of small solar system bodies continues to accelerate and the total number of measurements recorded by the Minor Planet Center now exceeds 135 million. Currently the Pan-STARRS project and the Catalina Sky Survey (CSS) dominate detection and discovery efforts, while the NEO-WISE space mission contributes infrared detections valuable for understanding the size distribution of populations. Looking forward, the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) is now funded and in construction on Cerro Pachon in Chile. LSST has the potential to revolutionize the field by conducting a multi-color, ten-year, all-sky survey with a limiting magnitude ~24.5 in the r-band. Survey operations are set to begin in 2022.

M31 Planetary nebulae as seen by the Panchromatic Hubble Andromeda Treasury

We present a preliminary analysis of known planetary nebulae (PNe) in M31 that were observed in the first year of the Panchromatic Hubble Andromeda Treasury HST Multi-cycle program. We use the properties of this sample to discuss PNe from this new multi-band survey.
