Effectiveness of Self Regulation-Attachment Couple Therapy on Marital Commitment and Sexual Function of Women with Extramarital Affair

Aim: The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of self regulation-attachment couple therapy on improving marital commitment and sexual function in women with extra-marital affair. Methods: Semi-experimental research method with pre/post-test and control group including follow-up was used. The statistical population included women with extramarital affair referred to the counseling center for women in the city of Sanandaj, Iran. Using available sampling method, 30 subjects were selected and randomly assigned to experimental and control groups (15 participants each). Marital Commitment Questionnaire (Adams, Jones, 1997) and Women's Sexual Function Questionnaire (Rosen, Grandon, Myers, Hutty, 2004) were used. The intervention group received self regulation-attachment couple therapy through 8 ninety-minute sessions on a weekly basis. Data was analyzed using mixed analysis of variance. Findings: Results showed that self regulation-attachment couple therapy programs significantly improved the marital commitment and sexual function. Follow-up analyses showed that these results remained stable after three months (P<0/001). Conclusion: self regulation-attachment couple therapy approach by helping women achieve greater adjustment in relationship, dialogue and negotiation, increasing the ability to interact and improve the marital commitment and sexual function in women with extramarital affair. Discussions: The findings of the present study show that studying counseling and internship in this field has influenced students’ views of marriage and marital relationships in various ways.

Intimate partner violence, spouse extramarital affairs, and depression among women in rural Uganda

Background Depression is highly prevalent among women compared to men. Women in rural areas are more at risk of depression compared to their peers in urban areas. Some of the factors associated with depression among married women are spouse related factors including extramarital affairs and intimate partner violence (IPV).Objective To determine the prevalence of depression and factors associated with depression among married women in rural Southwestern Uganda.Methods This was a cross-sectional study in rural southwestern Uganda among married/cohabiting women aged 18 to 45 years. We used the Patient Health Questionnaire 9 (PHQ-9) to assess for depression, composite abuse scale (Revised) – Short Form (CASR-SF to measure IPV. Logistic regression was used to estimate the associations between depression and several factors including spouse extramarital affair, IPV, and sociodemographic factors.Results We enrolled 153 women, mean (standard deviation) age of 33.3 (6.7) and the majority were unemployed. The mean number of children between the couple was 4.05 (2.17). More than half (65,4%) had depressive symptoms and 64.1% had experienced intimate spouse violence. The reported spouses’ mean (SD) age was 43.4 (9.5). Almost half (49.65%) were known to be involved in an extramarital affair. There was a statically significant association between depression among women and spouse extramarital affairs (adjusted odds ratio (AOR) 24.93; 95% CI 1.25–498.34]; p-value = 0.04).Conclusion There was a high prevalence of depression and intimate partner violence among women in rural Uganda. The high prevalence was associated with spouse extramarital affairs. There should be routine screening for depression and intimate partner violence among married women at lower-level health facilities in rural settings especially those whose husbands are involved in extramarital affairs to ensure early diagnosis and access to appropriate mental health care to maintain functionality in society and family level since women are the backbone of their families.

Madness, Medicine, and Masculinity in Kim Tongin’s “Oh, the Frail-Hearted!”

This article examines how a major twentieth-century Korean writer, Kim Tongin, adopted the language of Western medical science to produce the effect of literary interiority as an iteration of the individual in his novella “Oh, the Frail-Hearted!” (1919–20). My reading of the story unravels the ways in which this work draws several equations between the practice of medical science and that of literature. The main character’s diary and letter are treated as his medical records; a well-known man of letters acts as his doctor by identifying his symptoms through the “medical” gaze; readers are invited to read his “mind” the way doctors examine those of their patients; his illness gives his interiority an identifiable form; and his extramarital affair is not only a love story but also a trigger of his mental illness. The medical gaze allows him to explore his sexuality beyond the traditional conjugal norm—whether via a heterosexual love affair or homoeroticism. His pursuit of individuality is, however, bounded by the “colonial” gaze, under which he appears as an accomplice of the collective debilitation of the colony through a moralistic prism.

Factors involving extramarital affairs among married adults in Bangladesh

Extramarital affairs have become a common occurrence in modern society. Many studies have pointed to the lack of variety in a relationship as a contributing factor related to divorce and extramarital affairs. This study wants to explore the reasons behind developing the extramarital affair in married adults. The study is based upon the information gathered through scanning newspapers, journals, books, and browsing the Internet and all related papers which were published from 1980 to 2016. However, there is a limited data on the specific topic. After reviewing literatures, we found some common factors that might be responsible for extramarital affairs. Based on that we have made some recommendations for lowering this devastating situation. From this study, we expect that the stakeholders and policy makers can develop some new thoughts and strategies to let down this overwhelming condition.
