The dependence of the cross-section of the coherent and incoherent radiation peaks in the X-ray absorption experiment of different energies (20-800 Kev) was investigated. Cross-sectional dependence on the atomic number Z was included from the published data for (8) elements, ranging from carbon to silver (C-Ag). The proportional constant K was obtained between (σc/σi), with the atomic number Z from (6-47). The results show that the value of K exponentially changes with energy.

Compton scattering is generally neglected in diffraction experiments because the incoherent radiation it generates does not give rise to interference effects and therefore is negligible at Bragg peaks. However, as the scattering volume is reduced, the difference between the Rayleigh (coherent) and Compton (incoherent) contributions at Bragg peaks diminishes and the incoherent part may become substantial. The consequences can be significant for coherent diffraction imaging at high scattering angles: the incoherent radiation produces background that smears out the secondary interference fringes, affecting thus the achievable resolution of the technique. Here, a criterion that relates the object shape and the resolution is introduced. The Compton contribution for several object shapes is quantified, and it is shown that the maximum achievable resolution along different directions has a strong dependence on the crystal shape and size.

The paper presents the results of interaction of film charges of pyrotechnic composition VS-2 with incoherent radiation of flash lamps. It is shown that the pulsed light radiation of flash lamp «EVIS-3» causes detonation in the film of the photosensitive pyrotechnic fulmination of VS-2 at a speed from 4200 to 4500 m/s, and in the aluminum plate-witness – deformation, the value of which depends on the thickness of the film charge of the pyrotechnic composition of VS-2

The possibility of detecting blood vessels located in the tissues of the brain, based on images of the visible and near infrared ranges, has been investigated. The preliminary results obtained in the course of the experiment confirm the prospects of using plane-polarized incoherent radiation with a central wavelength in the range from 730 to 900 nm in the course of further research in order to create a system for automatic detection of blood vessels and cranial nerves from endoscopic images.

Chapter 5 presents the views of photons that have accompanied experimental uses of lasers to manipulate the quantum states of atoms and other systems. It discusses not only the Einstein rate equations appropriate for incoherent radiation but also the Rabi oscillations that accompany coherent excitation, and the Jaynes-Cummings model that demonstrates the discreteness of photons.
