Ultrasonographic diagnosis in rare primary cervical cancer

IntroductionAlthough ultrasonography has been reported to have similar diagnostic accuracy to magnetic resonance imaging, it is not a standard imaging modality for cervical cancer. We aimed to summarize the ultrasonographic features of rare primary cervical cancer.MethodsThis was a retrospective study of patients with cervical cancer who were diagnosed between June 2014 and October 2019. They were divided into common-type cervical cancer (ie, cervical squamous cell carcinoma) and rare-type cervical cancer groups including adenocarcinoma, adenosquamous carcinoma, and small cell carcinoma. All patients were staged according to the tumor, nodes, and metastases criteria.ResultsOf the 64 patients, the diagnosis was suspected on ultrasonography in 61 (95.3%) patients and missed on ultrasonography in three patients. The tumor size was smaller in the rare-type cervical cancer group (p<0.05). Hypoechoic lesions in common-type cervical cancer and isoechoic lesions accounted for 74.4% (32/43) and 61.9% (13/21) of patients in the rare-type cervical cancer group, respectively (p<0.001). Meanwhile, 67.4% (29/43) of tumors in common-type cervical cancer were exophytic, while 66.7% (14/21) in rare-type cervical cancer were endophytic (p=0.01). Color Doppler blood signals, as compared with normal cervical tissue, were found in all patients. There was good consistency between ultrasonographic and pathologic diagnosis of rare-type cervical cancer (weighted kappa=0.87).ConclusionsMost patients with rare-type cervical cancer present with isoechoic lesions. The coincidence rate between ultrasonographic and pathologic diagnosis of rare-type cervical cancer is 87%.

Trans-cervical thoracic duct embolization for post-surgical left Chylothorax in a patient with multifocal lymphatic malformations

Background Mediastinal and abdominal lymphatic malformations may not be diagnosed until adulthood. Radiologic and pathologic diagnosis is often challenging due to the rarity of the lesion. Surgical excision of these lesions may be curative but lymphatic leak is a known complication. Lymphatic duct embolization may then be required to treat the leak. Case presentation We describe a patient with post-surgical chylothorax where thoracic duct lymphangiography and embolization was performed by catheterizing the thoracic duct at the venous angle where it drains into the subclavian vein. Conclusion Lymphatic duct embolization can be challenging in patients with lymphatic malformations. In these patients, if there is adequate visualization on ultrasound or fluoroscopy, terminal aspect of the thoracic duct can be accessed through the subclavian vein to perform the procedure.

Clinicopathologic features of thyroid neoplasm with THADA-IGF2BP3 fusion

Introduction/Objective Thyroid adenoma-associated (THADA)-IGF2BP3 fusions is related to strong overexpression of insulin-like growth factor 2 mRNA-binding protein 3 (IGF2BP3) mRNA and protein, increased IGF2 translation and IGF1 receptor signaling via PI3K and MAPK pathways. THADA-IGF2BP3 have been identified as an oncogenic event in thyroid neoplasms, but the clinicopathologic features have not been greatly evaluated. The purpose of this cases review is to describe the clinical and pathologic findings of thyroid nodules with THADA-IGF2BP3 fusion on molecular testing. Methods/Case Report Surgical Pathology 220 cases of total and hemithyroidectomy from January 2018 to December 2019 were reviewed for cytology fine needle aspiration (FNA), molecular testing results and surgical resection pathology. Results (if a Case Study enter NA) Three cases of THADA-IGF2BP3 fusion identified by Thyroseq testing from FNA of thyroid nodules with all diagnosed as atypia of undetermined significance, Bethesda category 3. No other mutations or gene fusions are identified. Successive surgical interventions are performed. Case 1 is a 49-year-old female right hemithyroidectomy with pathologic diagnosis of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) follicular variant with tumor capsular invasion and no lymphvascular invasion. The tumor is 2cm, two lymph nodes evaluated are not involved by tumor and pathological stage is pT1b pN0. Case 2 is a 71-year-old female total thyroidectomy and the pathologic diagnosis is PTC follicular variant with tumor capsular invasion and no lymphvascular invasion. The tumor is 2cm, one lymph node evaluated is not involved by tumor and pathologic stage is pT1b pN0. Case 3 is a 76-year-old male left hemithyroidectomy and pathologic diagnosis is PTC follicular variant with tumor capsular invasion and no lymphvascular invasion. The tumor is 2cm, two lymph nodes evaluated are not involved by tumor and pathologic stage is pT1b pN0. Conclusion THADA-GF2BP3 fusion is uncommon in thyroid neoplasms and only three cases are detected in 220 cases evaluated. The three cases of thyroid nodules are all diagnosed as AUS by FNA, and all are diagnosed as PTC follicular variant with capsular invasion upon resection without lymphvascular invasion or lymph node involvement. THADA-F2BP3 fusion is associated with thyroid carcinoma, with low-risk non-aggressive behavior, conservative surgery appears necessary and lobectomy is likely adequate.

Aptasensors for Staphylococcus aureus Risk Assessment in Food

Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is the top ordinary pathogen causing epidemic and food poisoning. The authentication of S. aureus has great significance for pathologic diagnosis and food hygiene supervision. Various biosensor methods have been established for identification. This paper reviews the research progress of aptasensors for S. aureus detection, focusing on the classification of aptamer technologies, including optical aptasensors and electrochemical aptasensors. Furthermore, the feasibility and future challenges of S. aureus detection for aptamer assays are discussed. Combining aptasensors with nanomaterials appears to be the developing trend in aptasensors.
