Effects of Aging Torque Controllers on Screw Tightening Force and Bacterial Micro-Leakage on the Implant-Abutment Complex

Aim: We assess the accuracy of torque controllers after several aging processes and the bacterial leakage on Implant-Abutment complexes (IAC).Methods: A total of 12 spring-type and 12 friction-type torque controllers and 48 IAC (24 conical and 24 hexagonal connections) were evaluated. Chemical, mechanical, temperature, and pressure-aging methods were applied individually to replicate clinical use. Torque controller accuracy was analyzed before and after aging using a calibrated gauge. To assess bacterial leakage, the IAC were suspended in a bacterial medium for 24 h. Direct Contact Test (DCT) and Polymerase Chain Reaction Test (RT-PCR) analyzed the infiltration of F. nucleatum and P. gingivalis into the IAC micro-gap. Results: A significant decrease in torque after 10 days of aging was found. The spring-type torque controller was affected the most, regardless of the aging method (P < 0.05). PCR results indicated that all groups exhibited significantly more bacterial leakage, regardless of the method used (P < 0.05). The conical IAC demonstrated more bacterial leakage of P. gingivalis compared with the hexagonal IAC (P = 0.07). DCT found bacterial growth in the IAC only before aging and was not identified after aging. Conclusion: Aging affects torque accuracy. A reduction in force was noticed after 10 days. The conical IAC exhibits more bacterial leakage, although this was not statistically significant.

Design of a Novel Integrated Ultrasonic Tool Holder for Friction Stir Welding

Ultrasonic vibration used in friction stir welding (FSW) has shown advantages in reducing welding defects and improving welding quality. How to design an ultrasonic tool holder is a challenge because the holder is rotating in a confined space. In this study, we design a 20 kHz integrated ultrasonic tool holder in FSW. This novel configuration can be applied in general machining equipment. The elastic modulus is measured by non-destructive acoustic testing to attain the precise frequency. Three FSW transducers with alloy steel are designed by the modal analysis and the transducer prototypes are fabricated. The effect of pre-tightening force on transducer frequency is investigated, where the prestress of the piezoelectric stack instead of the torque is tested to achieve an optimal working frequency. The vibration of the transducers is measured by a Doppler Vibrometer System. It proved that the resonant frequencies are well consistent between simulation model and the experiment by the elastic modulus testing and the pre-tightening optimization. Moreover, the experiment demonstrates that the vibration amplitude is significantly different, even in a slight difference of steel material properties are adopted. The dynamic performance of the designed transducers is acceptable by the vibration measurement.

Evaluating the Vertical Extension Module of a Building with Installed Rotary Dampers at Joints

In this study, the shape of a vertical expansion module with a rotary-type damping device is proposed. The external energy dissipation capacity is confirmed through experiments and the performance of the module is simulated. It can be easily applied to high-rise structures, as the module is directly supported by the bearing walls without the need for a separate base system. Additionally, as the damper can be replaced, it is possible to enhance seismic performance even after construction. The simulation results show that the rotary-type damper is more effective in reducing the displacement, shear force, and moment than free and fixed joints. In the pushover analysis of a system modeled using the moment hinge of the rotary damper of the joint, the best response reduction effect is obtained when the yield moment of the hinge is defined as 1% of the frame plastic moment. As a result of the analysis of the multi-degree-of-freedom system considering a harmonic load, we determined that it is efficient for the hinge to yield after the displacement, and the acceleration response of the resonant structure reaches steady state during the installation. In the multi-degree-of-freedom system with slab joints added to the analytical model, the displacement response decreased gradually as the natural period of the structure decreased and the joint increased. This provides evidence that the damper does not affect the overall behavior of the structure. The most important design factor of the rotary-type friction damper, shown through the experiment, is the relationship between the frictional surface and the tightening force of the bolt.

Full-Stress Anchoring Technology and Application of Bolts in the Coal Roadway

The traditional anchoring method of bolts has insufficient control over the surrounding rock of the coal roadway. Based on this background, full-stress anchoring technology of bolts was proposed. Firstly, a mechanical relationship model of a bolt-drawing, anchoring interface was established to obtain the equations of the axial force and obtain shear stress distribution as well as the decreasing-load transfer law of the anchoring section of bolts. Through studying the prestress-loading experimental device of bolts, we found that increasing the initial preload could increase the axial force under the same conditions and the retarded anchoring section could control the axial-force loss of bolts in the middle of the anchoring section. Under the full-stress anchoring mode, the effect of applying a pre-tightening force was better than that of applying a pre-tightening force under traditional anchoring methods. Moreover, FLAC3D (Fast Lagrangian Analysis of Continua 3D; ITASCA (Ita sca International Inc), Minnesota, USA) numerical simulation calculation was performed. Under the full-stress anchoring mode of bolts, the increased anchoring length reduced the damage of the anchoring section, with a wider control range of the rock formation and higher strength of the compressive-stress anchoring zone. Based on the above research, four methods for applying the full-stress anchoring technology of bolts in engineering were proposed. The full-stress anchoring technology of bolts in the coal roadway has been applied in the support project of the return-air roadway at working face 3204 of the Taitou Coking Coal Mine of the Xiangning Coking Coal Group, Shanxi. The maximum moving distance of the roof and floor of the roadway was reduced from 200 to 42 mm, and the maximum moving distance on both coal sides was reduced from 330 to 86 mm. The full-stress anchoring technology of bolts was able to control the surrounding rock in the coal roadway.

Effects of different friction coefficients on input torque distribution in the bolt tightening process based on the energy method

Bolted joints are one of the most common fastening methods in engineering applications. To meet the requirements of structural parts, the torque method is often used for controlling the bolted joint performance. However, only a few investigations have been carried out on the conversion efficiency of bolt torque to the tensile force, leading to uncertainty and potential safety hazards during the bolt tightening. In order to study the input torque distribution and overcome problems caused by the Motosh method and experimental investigations, a new energy-based torque distribution model is established in the present study. In the proposed model, numerous affecting parameters, including the effective bearing radius, effective thread contact radius, spiral angle, and connector deformation are considered. Then a parameterized thread mesh model using finite element technology is proposed to analyze the influence of different bolt friction coefficients on the bolt tightening process. Based on 16 types of tightening analyses, it is concluded that as bolt friction coefficient increases, the corresponding torque conversion rate decreases from 14.45% to 7.89%. Compared with the Motosh method, the torque conversion rate obtained by the proposed method is relatively large, which makes the actual pre-tightening force larger than the design value. However, there is still a possibility of bolt failure.

Simulation application for express analysis of bolted joint of plates made of laminated composite material for strength taking into account technological factors

The structural element in the form of bolted connection (BC) of plates from polymeric composite materials (PCM) is not supported in modern computer CAD systems in a convenient form for the express analysis. Therefore, research aimed at creating appropriate tools in the form of additional programs is relevant. The application BJE (Bolted Joint Emulations) is presented at the paper. It was created by the authors on the basis of available results of simulation calculations of BC of plates made of layered PCM. Selection of corresponding analytical solutions, the revealed functional dependences, approximations were used. The feature of this development is taking into account influence of the main technological factors: tightening force, side gaps, stuck of layers in the PCM, others.

Research on coordination design method of main bearing assembly structure based on the maximum radial deformation of bearing bush

Aiming at the difficulty of control and evaluation of main bearing deformation in the coordination design of the main bearing assembly structure for a high-speed diesel engine, taking MRD (the MRD means the maximum radial deformation of the bearing bush) of the bearing bush as an index to evaluate the out-of-round deformation of the bearing bush was proposed in this paper. The numerical calculation method of the MRD was given and the correctness of the method was experimentally verified. And the influence rules of different design parameters on the MRD were analyzed. On this basis, the coordination multi-objective optimization research of the main bearing assembly structure was carried out, and the optimization results were analyzed based on the influence rules of different design parameters on the reliability indexes. The results show that, when the pre-tightening force of the vertical bolt and the bearing bush interference are 240 kN and 0.17 mm respectively, the MRD reaches the minimum value. If the two values continue to increase, redundant loads can be generated, leading to the increase of the MRD. After optimization, the engine block strength coordination and bearing cap strength coordination had increased by 2.47% and 10.48%, respectively, and the deformation coordination and contact coordination had increased by 46.15% and 14.84%, respectively.
