While a small number of studies have investigated salary negotiation in librarianship, none have focused on Canadian academic libraries. What are the motivations and barriers that impact employment-offer negotiation? When Canadian librarians negotiate, what subjects are discussed, and do they feel they were successful? This preliminary report is a descriptive summary on the results of a survey we conducted to explore the negotiation propensity and perceptions of Canadian academic librarians when presented with their most recent offer of employment. A better understanding of this topic may encourage negotiation conversations and empower librarians in future employment offer negotiations to improve salaries and working conditions.

Female faculty earn 81.4% of what male faculty earn. Salary negotiation is a critical component of job offers and can have lasting implications for pay during a career. To better understand the salary negotiation process for female sport management professors, this study examined perceived barriers held by participants. A qualitative approach was taken, utilizing in-person and phone interviews to collect the participant’s experiences with salary negotiation. Results indicated that female sport management professors perceived the main barrier in salary negotiation to be the expected adherence to gender roles. Subthemes that emerged from the expected adherence to gender roles included believing stereotypes and lacking confidence. Understanding the influence of gender role adherence in salary negotiations can contribute to the education and skills necessary for students as well as professors in implementing pedagogical strategies related to salary negotiation. Implementing these strategies can contribute to a field that continues to strive to embrace diversity and promote an inclusive environment.

Bargain/negotiation is something which is commonly used in the corporate world. Bargaining is an indispensable part of hiring process and is generally termed as salary negotiation but ideally negotiations take place for many other factors other than compensation viz: designation, profile, KRA’s and so on. The word Bargain is defined as, ‘to boil down to common consensus or to such an output which would be advantageous for both the parties (In this case talent & employer).’ In such a competitive world where the aspirant struggles to find an opportunity, and employers are in dire need of best talent, bargain plays an significant role in hiring process.

Negotiation is an integral part of our daily lives regardless of occupation. Although ubiquitous to our experience, we are never taught to negotiate. This lack of training presents many consequences from unfair salary negotiation to geopolitical ramification. The ability to resolve conflicts and negotiate is becoming more critical due to the rise of automated systems which look to replace various repetitive task jobs. In hopes of improving human negotiation skills, my work seeks to develop automated negotiation agents capable of providing personalized feedback. In this paper, I provide an overview of my past , current, and future work.
