The lecture discusses the tasks of perinatology, the influence of damaging factors at different periods of gestation, types of damaging effects, perinatal diagnosis and prevention of risks of fetal damage.

Significance The potato ban is one of several issues in which, when seen from Ottawa, US policy looks less neighbourly that many in the United States might assume. Although Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has made much of his relationship with President Joe Biden, Canadians are increasingly aware of these irritants in bilateral relations. Impacts An escalation in retaliatory tariffs is possible over the next few years, with damaging effects for both economies. Ottawa is likely to seek a new agreement on softwood lumber duties before the end of the Biden administration. The chance of a rupture in the section of a Canadian pipeline that runs through Michigan may rise if legal disputes delay action. Washington has made little effort to consult with Ottawa over policy towards China and this is unlikely to change.

Contrary to claims about the irrelevance of philosophy for science, I argue that philosophy has had, and still has, far more influence on physics than is commonly assumed. I maintain that the current anti-philosophical ideology has had damaging effects on the fertility of science. I also suggest that recent important empirical results, such as the detection of the Higgs particle and gravitational waves, and the failure to detect supersymmetry where many expected to find it, question the validity of certain philosophical assumptions common among theoretical physicists, inviting us to engage in a clearer philosophical reflection on scientific method.

Abstract Due to the fact that a relatively large area can be disinfected in a short time, dry-fog disinfection could have a great potential to improve hygienic measures. However, there are few studies to date on the effectiveness and combinability of this technology with other devices. In this work, the disinfecting potential of the TBT dry fogging technology (TBT Desinfektion GmbH & Co. KG, Germany) and the corresponding disinfectant Defeat AR (Biofluid GmbH, Germany) was examined with regard to microbiological decontamination and potential damaging effects on different devices. The airburden measurement did show a reduction of approx. 66% of the microbiological room contamination. Similarly, decontamination of test surfaces was shown to be effective at all measuring points we selected in the experimental setup. Depending on the accessibility of the surfaces this effect was in the range of several log levels. Nevertheless, a first test run showed that some technical equipment was negatively affected by the process.

Hordeum jubatum is a halophyte ornamental plant wildly distributed in the Northeast of China, where the low water potential induced by various abiotic stresses is a major factor limiting plant growth and development. However, little is known about the comparative effects of salt, alkali, and drought stresses at uniform water potential on the plants. In the present study, the growth, gas exchange parameters, photosynthetic pigments, and chlorophyll fluorescence in the seedlings of H. jubatum under three low water potentials were measured. The results showed that the growth and photosynthetic parameters under these stresses were all decreased except for carotenoid (Car) with the increasing of stress concentration, and alkali stress caused the most damaging effects on the seedlings. The decreased net photosynthetic rate (Pn), stomatal conductance (Gs), and intercellular CO2 concentrations (Ci) values under salt stress were mainly attributed to stomatal factors, while non-stomatal factors were dominate under drought and alkali stresses. The reduced chlorophyll and slightly increased Car contents occurred under these stresses, and most significant changed under alkali stress. In addition, the maximum photochemical efficiency (Fv/Fm), actual photochemical efficiency (ΦPSII), and photochemical quenching coefficient (qP) under the stresses were all decreased, indicating that salt, alkali, and drought stresses all increased susceptibility of PSII to photoinhibition, reduced the photosynthetic activity by the declined absorption of light for photochemistry, and increased PSII active reaction centers. Moreover, the non-photochemical quenching coefficient (NPQ) of alkali stress was different from salt and drought stresses, showing that the high pH of alkali stress caused more damaging effects on the photoprotection mechanism depending on the xanthophyll cycle. The above results suggest that the H. jubatum has stronger tolerance of salt than drought and alkali stresses, and the negative effects of alkali stress on the growth and photosynthetic performance of this species was most serious.

The online-based group known as antis, which originated around 2016 in the United States, exhibit morality-based, cult-like behavior and perpetuate hate speech and censorship in online spaces. Anti ideology has encouraged harmful, obsessive, and dangerous behaviors among its members, specifically minors and young adults. An analysis of the antifandom movement through political, sociological, and behavioral lenses reveals its damaging effects on women, people of color, minors, and members of the LGBTQIA+ community.

Lipid droplets kill pathogens and serve a crucial role in the body’s immune response. Their accumulation inside the kidney cells could protect the renal system from the damaging effects of a high-fat diet. These findings prove that lipid droplets serve a far greater purpose in the body than once imaged, opening the door for further investigations and possible treatment applications.

As of 1 May 2021, there have been 152 661 445 Covid-19 cases with 3 202 256 deaths globally. This pandemic led to the race to discover a vaccine to achieve herd immunity and curtail the damaging effects of Covid-19. This study aims to discuss the most recent WHO-approved Covid-19 vaccine subtypes, their status and geographical scheduled updates as of 4 May 2021. The keywords “Covid-19, Vaccines, Pfizer, BNT162b2, AstraZeneca, AZD1222, Moderna, mRNA-1273, Janssen, Ad26.COV2.S” were typed into PubMed. Thirty Two relevant PubMed articles were included in the study. The vaccines discussed are Pfizer/BNT162b2, Moderna Vaccine/mRNA1273, AstraZeneca/AZD122/ChAdOx1 n-CoV-19 and the Janssen vaccines/Ad26.COV2.S, as well as their platforms, trials, limitations and geographical distributions. As of 16 May 2021, the number of countries that have approved the use of the following vaccines is Pfizer in 85, Moderna in 46, Oxford/AstraZeneca in 101, and Janssen in 41.

An imbalance in any metabolic system can be traced to its homeostasis. When homeostatic environment is not attainable then there will be a response from the body. A new shift has emerged, “the negative feedback effect of high fructose consumption;” more pain than gain. The human metabolic system daily combat fructose sugar metabolism which emanates from high consumption. This inadvently lead to a chronological series of complications arising from the feedback. These feedbacks play pivotal roles in skeletal muscle damage and other body frameworks, it also fosters toxic advanced glycation end products (AGEs), factors that impose and inflict damaging effects to the body`s energy currency and serious threat to health. These damages are missed or overlooked because of early nonspecific physiological symptoms. High level of fructose has both long- and short-term effects on human metabolic processes. These effects which are majorly through the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and other free radicals, are felt in the disruption of biomolecules such as causing DNA mutation, lipid peroxidation etc. these effects in turn lead to various diseases such as cancer, diabetes, atherosclerosis, and other health issues. In this review, we will focus on the damaging effects this sugar has on human health and the present solutions being applied. We will also look at the next step in combatting and controlling these negative feedbacks.
