PRACTICE OF IRVING JOHN GILL MODERNISM

The article is devoted to the work of Irving John Gill during his heyday, and then in conditions when the principles of modernism discovered by him, due to the lack of society’s need for new architecture in the United States, were not needed in this country - from 1909 until his death in 1936. New technologies used by Gill in the construction of public and residential buildings from concrete are described as well as his unsuccessful participation in the Panama-California World Exhibition of 1915-191, the construction near Los Angeles of the “ideal” city of Torrance and end-of-life projects. The reasons why Gill did not become the leader of the American and one of the leaders of world architecture are discussed, and his work is still controversial.

How Lighting can Bring a Bridge to Life

<p>As a design office specialising in both bridge design and outdoor lighting, we know from experience what good lighting can do for a bridge and its surroundings. Our lecture will focus on several real-life projects where adding light has played an important role in transforming a bridge into an experience. As these projects will also show, lighting design can serve different purposes:</p><ul><li><p>Providing functional lighting to ensure safety</p></li><li><p>Enhancing the bridge’s appearance / Creating a specific night-time atmosphere</p></li><li><p>Telling the story behind the bridge and/or its location</p></li></ul><p>Among the examples shown will be the Hovenring, the hovering roundabout bicycle and pedestrian bridge in Eindhoven, where we have created a well-functioning and spectacular lighting design without a single light pole and a railway, pedestrian and wildlife bridge with illuminated railing that portrays images of the site’s history as well as local wildlife.</p>

Health and Illness as Enacted Phenomena

In this paper I explore health and illness through the lens of enactivism, which is understood and developed as a bodily-based worldly-engaged phenomenology. Various health theories – biomedical, ability-based, biopsychosocial – are introduced and scrutinized from the point of view of enactivism and phenomenology. Health is ultimately argued to consist in a central world-disclosing aspect of what is called existential feelings, experienced by way of transparency and ease in carrying out important life projects. Health, in such a phenomenologically enacted understanding, is an important and in many cases necessary part of leading a good life. Illness, on the other hand, by such a phenomenological view, consist in finding oneself at mercy of unhomelike existential feelings, such as bodily pains, nausea, extreme unmotivated tiredness, depression, chronic anxiety and delusion, which make it harder and, in some cases, impossible to flourish. In illness suffering the lived body hurts, resists, or, in other ways, alienates the activities of the ill person.

The Effect of Job Insecurity and Life Uncertainty on Everyday Consumptions and Broader Life Projects during COVID-19 Pandemic

Contemporary society is characterized by a high level of uncertainty in many domains of everyday life. The COVID-19 pandemic has generated a deep economic crisis, exacerbating worldwide feelings of uncertainty and precarity. Individuals with insecure jobs have (and will) probably suffered the most from this situation. Workers with higher job insecurity have poorer psychological and physical health, display more negative work attitudes and are less satisfied about their life. However, much less is known about the impact of job insecurity and life uncertainty on consumer behavior. Using the Conservation of Resources theory as a framework, the present study examines a model in which job insecurity and life uncertainty would have a negative effect on everyday consumptions and broader life projects of individuals. Data collection was conducted in Italy in June and July 2020 during COVID-19 pandemic, in the immediate aftermath of the national lockdown. In a sample of 830 workers, the results of a mediation analysis showed that job insecurity and life uncertainty had a detrimental impact of consumer behaviors, since they were significantly associated with higher propensity to sacrifice and reduce everyday short-term consumptions (e.g., buying food) and greater perceived unaffordability of broader long-term life projects (e.g., buying a house).

What do females really dream of? An individual-differences perspective on determining how narrative identity affects types of life projects and the ways of telling them

This article presents the findings of a study on life projects (LPs) created by adult females. It aims to show the specifics of future plans and of ideas on aspects of narrative identity in order to extend the existing literature. The study revealed the broad spectrum of LPs, with the most common categories related to study and work, regardless of the narrative identity incorporated into the study. However, separately taken, motives of agency and communion turned out to show some visible differences within the other types of LPs. The adoption of the identity development construct showed the specific meaning that projects had for each subgroup of narrators, who were distinguished based on the identity maturation level. In consequence, it exposed both content and formal aspects of LPs that appeared to differentiate and be characteristic for the next stages of maturity in the surveyed sample.

Mobility, Time, and Value

This chapter analyzes the high-stakes of the Gaokao, which, together with its undetermined outcome, forms a pillar of its fatefulness. It talks about how people see the exam as something consequential since it enables them to migrate from rural to urban places, expanding their capacity to realize important life projects like marriage, childbirth, and eldercare. It also emphasizes the value to people of the migration from rural to urban living, which relates intimately to how they perceive it as a journey toward modernity and national development. The chapter refers to the central-place theory that models China's complex system of interconnected, hierarchically nested regions and markets and corresponds closely with people's native understanding of place. It recounts how urban hierarchy assumed its current form after the commercial revolution of the Tang-Song transition in the ninth to thirteenth centuries.

BNCC, FLEXIBILIZAÇÃO CURRICULAR E PROTAGONISMO JUVENIL: MOVIMENTOS ATUAIS DE “CONSTRUÇÃO” DO ENSINO MÉDIO BRASILEIRO, A PARTIR DA LEI 13.415/2017

Resumo: O presente artigo investiga a Base Nacional Comum Curricular- BNCC, a flexibilização do currículo e a ideia de protagonismo juvenil, expressa por meio da Reforma do Ensino Médio, implantada no ano de 2017. A Metodologia utilizada foi a pesquisa bibliográfica de caráter qualitativo, tendo como referenciais os documentos que tratam sobre a reforma. Baseia suas reflexões no Materialismo Histórico Dialético, para o entendimento de elementos históricos e discursivos que permitam a compreensão de que a reforma está alinhada a um discurso neoliberal. As incursões apontaram que o processo proposto pela reforma desresponsabiliza o Estado pela ampla formação da juventude e seus processos de escolarização, assumindo um discurso de que o protagonismo juvenil se caracteriza como a condução dos jovens sobre seus projetos de vida, sua inserção no mercado de trabalho e por sua conduta cidadã, tendo a BNCC como instrumento alinhador desta política de educação.Palavras-chave: Base Nacional Comum Curricular, Flexibilização Curricular, Protagonismo Juvenil.BNCC, CURRICULAR FLEXIBILIZATION AND YOUTH PROTAGONISM: CURRENT MOVEMENTS OF "CONSTRUCTION" OF BRAZILIAN HIGH SCHOOL, FROM LAW 13.415 / 2017Abstract: This paper investigates the National Common Curricular Base - BNCC, the flexibility of the curriculum, and the idea of youth protagonism, expressed through the High School Reform, implemented in the year 2017. It bases its reflections on Dialectical and Historical Materialism, to comprehend historical and discursive elements that allow the understanding that the reform is aligned to a neoliberal discourse. A mixed method for measuring incompatibilities between manufacturing approaches and off-site construction

PurposeThe purpose of this research is to measure incompatibilities between the manufacturing approaches (MA) used by the manufacturing industries, and those used for the off-site construction (OSC) of buildings. The aim is to explore which of these approaches could be integrated into OSC in a precise manner as viewed by architects as well as how this might occur.Design/methodology/approachAn empirical research and empirical cycle (EC) was adopted as a methodological framework to measure incompatibilities. A combination of quantitative and qualitative mixed methods was explored through a literature-based case study of prefabricated houses and cars, nine real-life projects built by the second author's research team and the first-named author's practical experiences of leading these projects, based on a logic framework derived from the authors’ reflections of their architectural practices.FindingsThe findings quantitatively present the incompatibilities between cars (automobile bodies) and prefabricated houses. Design-related aspects have the most potential for integration (42.3% increment). The key lessons were identified as specific design philosophies and related guidelines for architects.Research limitations/implicationsThe findings are limited to single types of products (cars) and buildings (prefabricated houses) in particular regions. The key lessons just present a preliminary evaluation of the application of the design philosophies and related guidelines in nine real-life projects to comply with word limit constraints.Practical implicationsThis study could help architects and other practitioners to locate and target and alleviated incompatibilities between MA and OSC. It could also precisely identify integration shortcomings to optimize decision-making as well as technical pathways for possible and effective breakthroughs.Social implicationsThis study provides fundamental research as a starting point for further discussion and development. A series of additional in-depth investigations combined with case studies are planned for the future. These could provide alternative study approaches to develop more appropriate architectural design methodologies and more streamlined processes.Originality/valueThe research contributes an alternative architectural perspective when measuring incompatibilities between MA and OSC. The results highlight the implications of precise measurement and provide guidance for architects. These facilitate the effective and successful integration of MA into OSC of buildings and promote the uptake of lean construction (LC) in OSC.
