Abstract This article revisits in today’s global setting the debate among international relations scholars over the so-called Kantian or democratic peace. In particular, it argues that findings made by S. M. Mitchell in a seminal 2002 article in the American Journal of Political Science regarding the diffusion of norms via third party conflict resolution relied upon a questionable methodology and now require belated revision. An alternative measure of norm diffusion would rely upon the proportion of democratic states, particularly contiguous states, in a given region. Moreover, a more detailed look at such diffusion after 1945 suggests important differences over the viability of democratic peace, especially regarding state behavior outside the Western Hemisphere.

Background Anastomotic leak after esophagectomy is one of the most challenging complications resulting in a high morbidity and mortality and prolonged hospitalization. The aim of this retrospective study was to access the impact of endoscopy intervention in anastomotic leak. Methods A retrospective review was conducted at our hospital from January 2008 to December 2016. In total, 263 patients who were diagnosed with an anastomotic leak after esophagectomy and underwent endoscopy examination were included in this study. First, all patients were divided into two groups based on a single criteria—whether they received endoscopy intervention or not—and comparisons were conducted between the two groups. Second, we categorized all patients into three groups based on the diameter of the anastomotic leak (group I: <5 mm; group II: 5–15 mm; group III: >15 mm). Detailed analyses were made for each group. Factors we considered included demographic factors, the length of postoperative hospital stay, the amount of medical expenditure, limited days of oral intake, and the incurrence of complications. Data relating to those factors were collected and then analyzed using standard statistic tools. Results In general, the difference between endoscopy intervention and conservative measure was significant. Moreover, the hospital stay (p < 0.001; p = 0.018), medical expenditure (p < 0.001; p = 0.003), limited days of oral intake (p < 0.001; p = 0.019), and postoperative complications such as hemorrhage (p < 0.001; p = 0.036), tracheoesophageal fistula (p = 0.002; p = 0.017), and anastomosis stricture (p = 0.03; p = 0.026) were significantly lower among patients who received endoscopy intervention in groups II and III. However, no significant difference was identified between endoscopy intervention and conservative measure in group I. Conclusions Endoscopy intervention is safe and effective in the diagnosis and treatment of postesophagectomy anastomotic leak. Especially for patients with a diameter of anastomotic leaks greater than 5 mm, the advantages of endoscopy intervention should not be neglected.

Previous research has shown a computational model of visual saliency can predict where people fixate in cluttered web pages (Masciocchi & Still, 2013). Over time, web site designers are moving towards simpler, less cluttered webpages to improve aesthetics and to make searches more efficient. Even with simpler interfaces, determining a saliency ranking among interface elements is a difficult task. Also, it is unclear whether the traditionally employed saliency model (Itti, Koch, & Niebur, 1998) can be applied to simpler interfaces. To examine the model’s ability to predict fixations in simple web pages we compared a distribution of observed fixations to a conservative measure of chance performance (a shuffled distribution). Simplicity was determined by using two visual clutter models (Rosenholz, Li, & Nakano, 2007). We found under free-viewing conditions that the saliency model was able to predict fixations within less cluttered web pages.

SummaryThe 1935 Criminal Law Amendment Act translated the Catholic Church's doctrine regarding contraception into the law of the land prohibiting the sale, importation and advertising of ‘unnatural methods’ of contraception.Over the years, public opinion has changed and it has been estimated that over 20,000 Irish wives are taking the pill in spite of Humanae Vitae. Family planning clinics have been set up in Dublin. In 1973, the Supreme Court ruled in the McGee case that the ban on importation was unconstitutional and violated private rights.Three private member's bills have been defeated and a Government bill to amend the 1935 Act is before the present session of the Dáil. It is a conservative measure seeking to restrict the importation and selling of contraceptives to licensed persons and making it an offence for unmarried persons to purchase them. It is probable that the bill will be defeated by Government members who regard it as too permissive and that the law will be further liberalized by more test-cases in the Courts.

In every generation since the pace of economic and social change began to accelerate in the late-eighteenth century the wildest hopes, aspirations and fears of the previous generation have been realized. The revolutionary prospect of heeding the will of the people in the 1790's became the conservative measure of 1832. The terrifying demands of the Chartists were well on the way to enactment by 1885, and with the payment of M.P.s in 1911 were substantially achieved, apart from the silliest of all the demands, that for annual parliaments.
