There is increasing interest in using biostimulant products, such as microbial inoculants and humic substances, to help manage rangelands regeneratively. Understanding how plant and soil communities on rangelands respond to these products is therefore important. In this study, we examined the combined effects of a commercial inoculant and humic product that are currently on the market, and asked whether they influenced rangeland forage productivity and quality, soil microbial biomass and community composition, and abiotic soil parameters in Central Coastal California. We found that forage productivity and some metrics of forage quality responded positively to the foliar application of a commercial microbial inoculant and humic product, but that these benefits were not mirrored by changes belowground in the microbial community or abiotic parameters. Depending on the goals of using the products, this could be seen as a winning scenario and suggests microbial inoculants and humic products could warrant attention as a potential tool for regenerative stewardship of rangelands. While our study derives from one ranch and therefore requires confirmation of its ubiquity prior to broadscale adoption, our results provide new insights into the usefulness of this approach for managing rangeland productivity in California's Central Coast.

Abstract. A phenological data set collected by citizen scientists from 1970 to 2018 in Latvia is presented, comprising almost 47 000 individual observations of eight taxonomical groups, in addition to agrarian activities and abiotic parameters, covering in total 159 different phenological phases. These original data published offline in annual issues of the Nature and History Calendar (in Latvian, Dabas un vēstures kalendārs) have been digitized, harmonized, and geo-referenced. Overall, the possible use of such data is extensive, as phenological data are excellent bioindicators for characterizing climate change and can be used for the elaboration of adaptation strategies in agriculture, forestry, and environmental monitoring. The data can also be used in cultural–historical research; for example, the database includes data on sugar beet and maize, the cultivation of which was imposed on collective farms during the Soviet period. Thus, such data are not only important in the Earth sciences but can also be applied to the social sciences. The data significantly complement current knowledge on European phenology, especially regarding northern regions and the temporal biome. The data here cover two climate reference periods (1971–2000; 1981–2010), in addition to more recent years, and are particularly important in monitoring the effects of climate change. The database can be considered the largest open phenological data set in the Baltics. The data are freely available to all interested at https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.3982086 (Kalvāne et al., 2020).

Zooplankton is a group of organisms that can help to understand the quality of aquatic ecosystems, as they are responsible for transforming energy matter, thus making it available to other links, making them important in aquatic trophodynamics. This study analyzed spatial and temporal variations in zooplankton communities found in two tidal control structures on Ilha do Maranhão, northeastern Brazil. Sampling took place from September 2017 to July 2018. Abiotic parameters (temperature, salinity, and transparency) and plankton samples were recorded monthly throughout the study period at each sampling site. The results found for the abiotic parameters showed a well-defined pattern, with a clear division between the dry and rainy periods. Forty taxa represented the zooplankton community of the São Luís tidal control structure, and from São José de Ribamar by 21 taxa, represented mainly by copepods, ichthyoplankton, foraminifera, polychaetes, and mollusks. The analysis of ecological indices of richness, evenness, and diversity showed a difference in the distribution of organisms among the study areas. We identified an important influence of the physicochemical parameters on the zooplankton communities of São Luís and São José de Ribamar, according to the statistical analyzes used in this study.

A study was carried out with the objective of evaluating the microbiological and physicochemical quality of surface water in the  Nkolafamba subdivision, Center Region of Cameroon. Five sampling points were selected based on several criteria. The bacteria isolated were Mesophilic Aerobic Heterotrophic Bacteria (BHAM), bacteria that were witnesses to faecal contamination and Pseudomonas. Some abiotic parameters were measured using the usual techniques. The results show that some physicochemical parameters such as temperature was almost constant around 25 °C during the study period. There is also a pH which tended towards neutrality pH de (7,04 ± 1,03 U.C). However, it was noted that the stations are quite oxygenated (63,96%). Bacteriological analyzes revealed that an average value of 5.17 units (logUFC / 100mL) was recorded for BHAM. Overall, the abundances of total coliforms averaged 4.18 units (logUFC / 100mL). The waters of Nkolafamba also harbor a pathogenic microflora, with bacteria such as P. aeruginosa P. pasteurella, the abundance of which can sometimes reach 5,462 units (log CFU / 100mL). These germs can be the cause of eye infections or septicemia on users of these waters. These waters have a high bacterial load, and the microbiological pollution observed is predominantly animal. Some abiotic parameters such as pH, electrical conductivity, Suspended Solid (SS), nitrates and turbidity have influenced the distribution of these germs. The degradation of the quality of these waters is favoured by their proximity to sources of pollution, the runoff of contaminated water in the stations. These waters, without any treatment, are not recommended for human consumption according to the standards of the World Health Organization.Keywords: Abiotic variables, faecal coliforms, faecal streptococci, pathogenic bacteria, rivers.

An investigation on microplankton composition and spatial distribution has been carried out around Italian seas. The analysis of 53 samples, collected in 2017 at two depths in 27 different stations, has led to a scenario of horizontal distribution of microplankton. Dinophyta and Ciliophora were chosen as representatives of the whole microplankton community. A total of 60 genera were identified. Cluster analysis of data regarding taxa presence and abundance led us to recognize that similarities between surface stations were more evident than those between deep ones. Furthermore, we conducted an inter-annual comparison with available data from the South Adriatic Sea (2013, 2015). The higher dissimilarity between deep sea samples was also confirmed in a relatively smaller geographic area. The dissimilarity of deep-sea samples does not correspond to a higher habitat diversification, in terms of abiotic parameters. It has been suggested that the negligible biological connectivity in the deep, for those micro-organisms not able to perform wide spatial migrations, could produce such a biological diversification.

Abstract Macrophytes are one of the main components of the aquatic ecosystem. They are used in several countries as metrics for the ecological assessment of hydrosystems. The objective of our study was to evaluate the suitability of the Macrophyte Biological Index for Rivers (IBMR) to determine a trophic level in the upper Oum Er Rbia basin (Morocco) and to understand physicochemical parameters of water that govern the distribution of macrophyte species. CCA analysis was used to relate the distribution of macrophytes to hydrochemical parameters of water. The CCA analysis shows that the distribution of macrophytes was more correlated with abiotic parameters (EC, WT and DO) than nutrient parameters (PO4-P, NO3-N, NO2-N, NH3-N and CODMn). The recorded values of IBMR in the upper Oum Er Rbia basin indicate that the trophic level of the studied rivers ranged from “moderate” to “very high”. Pearson's correlation coefficient showed that the IBMR is more correlated with the abiotic parameters such as WT and EC and does not show any significant correlation with the content of PO4-P and NH3-N in water, which makes the IBMR index unreliable for assessing the trophic status related to phosphate and ammonia concentrations in our lotic waters.

Abstract Background An aquaponic system couples cultivation of plants and fish in the same aqueous medium. The system consists of interconnected compartments for fish rearing and plant production, as well as for water filtration, with all compartments hosting diverse microbial communities, which interact within the system. Due to the design, function and operation mode of the individual compartments, each of them exhibits unique biotic and abiotic conditions. Elucidating how these conditions shape microbial communities is useful in understanding how these compartments may affect the quality of the water, in which plants and fish are cultured. Results We investigated the possible relationships between microbial communities from biofilms and water quality parameters in different compartments of the aquaponic system. Biofilm samples were analyzed by total community profiling for bacterial and archaeal communities. The results implied that the oxygen levels could largely explain the main differences in abiotic parameters and microbial communities in each compartment of the system. Aerobic system compartments are highly biodiverse and work mostly as a nitrifying biofilter, whereas biofilms in the anaerobic compartments contain a less diverse community. Finally, the part of the system connecting the aerobic and anaerobic processes showed common conditions where both aerobic and anaerobic processes were observed. Conclusion Different predicted microbial activities for each compartment were found to be supported by the abiotic parameters, of which the oxygen saturation, total organic carbon and total nitrogen differentiated clearly between samples from the main aerobic loop and the anaerobic compartments. The latter was also confirmed using microbial community profile analysis.

In order to contribute to the identification of the current faunistic composition of the Moroccan Mediterranean western coastline foraminifera, sediment from 4 stations have been analyzed, along with some abiotic parameters (pH, dissolved oxygen, temperature, and salinity), In order to characterize their populations, different Ecological indices were calculated and compared in the various samples. A total of 3451 individuals belonging to 14 species were recognized (90,26% hyaline, 9,74% porcelaneous, and none agglutinated test was found), all assemblages were dominated mainly by Elphidium crispum, Ammonia beccarii, and subordinately by Quinqueloculina sp1 and Heterolepa dutemplei. All sampling sites showed remarkable similarity in the Foraminiferal assemblages, and the Oued Nigro station is considered the wealthiest and densest site, whereas Oued Martil records the lowest values of those parameters. On the other hand, the Sample from M'diq presents the lowest diversity index even if it is the second in terms of density. The faunistic analysis had also allowed the observation of some morphological abnormalities only found in the Oued Nigro station, affecting some individuals' tests. A small-sized chamber mainly manifests the abnormal appearances in the spiral whorls and calcification defects in the calcareous wall.
