Silence, Satire and Empathy: Reading Appupen’s Topoi in His Wordless Graphic Narratives

The projection of the incongruities of contemporary times through the frame of satire is a powerful instrument in the genre of comics and graphic narratives and in Indian graphic literature as well. Mendiburo-Seguel and Heintz (2020) explain eight Comic Style Markers (CSM) in Latin-American cultures, and satire, a “darker style”, is one of them. The paper aims to conceptualise how Appupen’s wordless graphic narratives Moonward: Stories from Halahala (2009), Legends of Halahala (2013), Aspyrus: A Dream of Halahala (2014) and The Snake and the Lotus: A Halahala Adventure (2018) register black satire against society, politics, religion, industrialization, consumerism, advertisement and so on and how they prove to play the role of “corrective humour” (Ruch and Heintz, 2016). This paper attempts to explore how the “author-artist’s” (Aldama, 2010) fantastical and dystopic graphic narratives, excoriate social and political issues to create a unique aesthetic of thoughtful critical writing in graphic mode, thereby collectively contributing to the interdisciplinary studies of fantasy and dystopia and helping to proliferate the genre of Indian Comics and graphic narratives as well. Moreover, as “satire had a moral goodness that was lacking in sarcasm and cynicism” (Ruch, Heintz, Platt, Wagner, and Proyer, 2018), this essay argues what kind of empathic feeling, perspective sharing and cognitive overlap Appupen cultivates in these four narratives and develops their moral, aesthetic and humane tenacity. The article discusses Appupen’s satire as a vehicle by which he prudently moulds empathy with the reader to convey the intrinsic values of the texts.

Incompatible Discrepancy Between Low Proficiency of Arabic Language and Its High Status and Prestige

Muslims are ardent to learn Arabic and study al-Qurʾān, but many of them are not competent in manipulating the Arabic language. The discrepancy of high prestige and status of the language versus low proficiency of the learners is the target of the research in this chapter. The author calls this “incompatible discrepancy.” What do they indeed do in the Arabic school and Qurʾānic school? If they are so ardent, they should be highly competent in Arabic. The process of their learning is, exactly to say, rote-learning. In schooling they just memorize phrases from al-Qurʾān and the other religious texts. They start to learn Arabic as a graphic mode. They never learn Arabic as an identity marker without sticking to the way of learning it as a graphic mode. In this globalizing world everything is going to be digitalized. On the other hand, in the Islamic world many of the things remain analog, especially the way of leaning Arabic. The globalizing world is digital while the Islamic world is analog. Digital/analog can be considered as an important perspective for the world.

A weakly nonlinear mechanism for mode selection in swirling jets

Global linear and nonlinear bifurcation analysis is used to revisit the spiral vortex breakdown of nominally axisymmetric swirling jets. For the parameters considered herein, stability analyses single out two unstable linear modes of azimuthal wavenumber $m= \ensuremath{-} 1$ and $m= \ensuremath{-} 2$, bifurcating from the axisymmetric breakdown solution. These modes are interpreted in terms of spiral perturbations wrapped around and behind the axisymmetric bubble, rotating in time in the same direction as the swirling flow but winding in space in the opposite direction. Issues are addressed regarding the role of these modes with respect to the existence, mode selection and internal structure of vortex breakdown, as assessed from the three-dimensional direct numerical simulations of Ruith et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 486, 2003, pp. 331–378). The normal form describing the leading-order nonlinear interaction between modes is computed and analysed. It admits two stable solutions corresponding to pure single and double helices. At large swirl, the axisymmetric solution bifurcates to the double helix which remains the only stable solution. At low and moderate swirl, it bifurcates first to the single helix, and subsequently to the double helix through a series of subcritical bifurcations yielding hysteresis over a finite range of Reynolds numbers, the estimated bifurcation threshold being in good agreement with that observed in the direct numerical simulations. Evidence is provided that this selection is not to be ascribed to classical mean flow corrections induced by the existence of the unstable modes, but to a non-trivial competition between harmonics. Because the frequencies of the leading modes approach a strong $2$:$1$ resonance, an alternative normal form allowing interactions between the $m= \ensuremath{-} 2$ mode and the first harmonics of the $m= \ensuremath{-} 1$ mode is computed and analysed. It admits two stable solutions, the double helix already identified in the non-resonant case, and a single helix differing from that observed in the non-resonant case only by the presence of a slaved, phase-locked harmonic deformation. On behalf of the finite departure from the $2$:$1$ resonance, the amplitude of the slaved harmonic is however low, and the effect of the resonance on the bifurcation structure is merely limited to a reduction of the hysteresis range.

Airborne Real Time Instrumentation System (ARTISt): Studi Analisis dan Perancangannya

ARTISt is an instrumentation system based on Personal Computer (PC) which is installed on board the prototype aircraft to perform presentation of flight test data in real time. The presentation consists of display the data in table mode, graphic mode, mixed mode (table and graphic), and xplot mode (graphic between 2 parameters), and also print and record the data. The data which has been recorded by ARTISt, can be used by other software through the Disk Management System (DMS). Children's Inferencing Behavior

Third and fifth graders were given a sequence of number pairs and asked ro discover the function rule relating them, test the hypothesis, and generalize it to other instances. The fifth graders were better than the third graders on all performance criteria. Task difficulty depended on the funcuon. Some functions were easier when presented in a graphic mode, others in a symbolic mode. Whether inferences made use of abscissa-ordinate pairs, in contrast to a sequence of ordinate values, appeared to depend on both function and mode of presentation. Unlike adults, the children seemed ready to relinquish a hypothesis in the face of disconfirming evidence.

Measurement of attack-Release Times in Compression Hearing Aids

A system for measurement of attack-release times in hearing aids with automatic-gain-control circuitry is described, with a view toward implementing that portion of the ANSI S3.22-1976 Standard in which parameters for these measurements are specified. Signal generation is accomplished by using a phased-array loudspeaker arrangement designed to produce transient-free pulsed acoustic sinusoids. Output waveforms are captured by a commercial transient recorder, and are displayed in either an oscilloscopic or graphic mode. A specific means of calculating attack and release times is recommended whereby variously shaped output waveforms are amenable to the basic protocol outlined in the ANSI Standard.
