Drinking has become a major area of concern in contemporary modern world. It has both positive and negative consequences depending upon the pattern of use of this substance. The present article talks about the negative consequences of critical drinking. In particular, it discusses how critical drinking manifests into different types of problems for the alcoholics, and causes the problem of alcoholism in society. The main objective of this study is to understand how alcoholism ruins the life of alcoholics and the kind of problems they face due to their critical addiction in the family premises. The research question for the present study is to determine whether alcoholics are the problem creator in society, or they are also victims of their habits? This study is based on primary data collected from 100 alcoholics from different parts of Punjab while keeping in mind the definition of alcoholic. And, in order to generate the primary data of the present study, the methods like snowballing technique, semi-structured interview schedule, participant observation etc. have been used. The study has found that the alcoholics face multiple social problems, which vary from minor to major, due to their critical drinking habit. In most of the cases, normal drinking habit turns into critical drinking pattern, which increases the possibility of troubles for alcoholics as well as for others. The study concludes that alcoholics are not merely the troublemakers in society but they are also the victims of their own misfortune. Moreover, these problems further worsen the alcoholics’ drinking habits. Resultantly, this all turns into the vicious circle of excessive drinking and associated problems.

Abstract Helicobacter pylori is a cause of stomach cancer and peptic ulcer. For prevention, improving the eradication rate of H. pylori is crucial. However, the association between eradication and lifestyle of infected patients, including alcohol consumption, remains unclear. We explored associations between failed primary eradication therapy and drinking status by sex. This study involved 356 patients who visited a pharmacy with prescriptions for primary H. pylori eradication therapy. We assessed drinking habits using a questionnaire. Data on patients with failed primary eradication were provided by the nearby local clinic. We performed logistic regression analysis to examine the effect of drinking habit and frequency of drinking on failed primary eradication by sex. The odds ratio of primary eradication failure in female patients with a drinking habit was 3.75 (P = 0.001), but that in male patients was not significant. The odds ratio tended to increase in relation to drinking frequency in women. Frequent consumption of alcohol is not only likely to affect eradication, but also has a large impact on the bodies of women, who are more susceptible than men to the effects of alcohol. Thus, women should take greater care in alcohol consumption.

Brian Moore’s novel The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne is set in a boarding house in early 1950s Belfast, but it is quite a few pages before Judith Hearne’s drinking habit is revealed. The novel then portrays the effect on an individual when belief in God disappears. Alienated through ostensibly social causes such as her ‘odd duck’ physical appearance and family responsibility, the character’s dulling of reality through drink is also her response to the kind of bleak truth that Jack London identifies in John Barleycorn. Hearne’s society, family and upbringing are powerfully infused with Catholicism, and as her experience of apostasy becomes stronger so does her recognition that she is completely free to behave how she wishes, which includes more socially unacceptable drinking. The chapter places the novel’s thematic concerns within the wider context of Existentialism’s focus on how to respond to a world which is now deemed to have been abandoned by a God who, nevertheless, cannot be entirely shaken off. These difficulties are partly filtered through the secular and religious meanings of ‘passion’.

Sampling using simple random sampling method. Taking data on drinking habits is obtained with Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ). The hydration status is obtained by card measurement PURI (Check Your Own Urine). Physical fitness is derived from a physical fitness test that is a Beep test. Test the relationship using Spearmen Rank Test and Pearson Product Moment Test. Research subjects who have drinking habits less 48,5%, enough 15,2% and more 36,4%. Dehydrated athletes weigh 9,1%, mild dehydration 60,6% and well hydrated 30,3%. Athletes who have physical fitness under 12,1% average, 12,1% average, above average 24,2%, Excellent 30,3% and Superior 21,2%. This study aimed to investigate the drinking habits of Japanese physicians, and clarify their causal factors. A self-administered questionnaire was sent to 6000 male and 1500 female physicians, selected from among members of the Japan Medical Association. We analyzed the correlation of drinking habits with age, medical department, smoking and exercise status, work environment, sleep problems, and mental health. The response rate was 79.4%. Physicians with a heavy drinking habit were most frequently men in their 60s and women in their 20s to 50s. Drinking or heavy drinking tendencies decreased with increasing age. Smoking status was correlated with heavy drinking. Exercise status was correlated with drinking among men, and drinking/heavy drinking among women. Mental health was not correlated with drinking habit. However, sleep problems were correlated with a heavy drinking habit. These results suggest that countermeasures need to be taken to decrease the rate of heavy drinking among physicians.
