Research and Prediction of Wettability of Irregular Square Column Structure on Polymethyl Methacrylate (PMMA) Surface Prepared by Femtosecond Laser

Based on the contact angle prediction model of a traditional square column structure, the prediction models for wettability of a parallelogram square column structure (PSCS) on polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) surface prepared by femtosecond laser were established. An experiment was conducted to analyze the rationality of the established complete wetting model and incomplete wetting model. It was found that the incomplete wetting prediction model of the square column structure was more in line with the actual situation. For PSCS, the length of both the long and short sides of the boss and the width of the groove exerted an impact on the contact angle prediction results. Under the condition that the length of the long and short sides of the boss remained unchanged and the groove width increased, the contact angle increased under complete wetting and incomplete wetting. In contrast, under the condition that the long side length of the boss and the groove width remained unchanged and the short side length of the boss increased, the contact angle increased under complete wetting but decreased under incomplete wetting. The maximum contact angle reached 135.65°, indicating that PSCS on PMMA surface enhanced the surface hydrophobicity of the material.

Gradient wettability induced by deterministically patterned nanostructures

We report a large-scale surface with continuously varying wettability induced by ordered gradient nanostructures. The gradient pattern is generated from nonuniform interference lithography by utilizing the Gaussian-shaped intensity distribution of two coherent laser beams. We also develop a facile fabrication method to directly transfer a photoresist pattern into an ultraviolet (UV)-cured high-strength replication molding material, which eliminates the need for high-cost reactive ion etching and e-beam evaporation during the mold fabrication process. This facile mold is then used for the reproducible production of surfaces with gradient wettability using thermal-nanoimprint lithography (NIL). In addition, the wetting behavior of water droplets on the surface with the gradient nanostructures and therefore gradient wettability is investigated. A hybrid wetting model is proposed and theoretically captures the contact angle measurement results, shedding light on the wetting behavior of a liquid on structures patterned at the nanoscale.

Investigation and Prediction on Regulation of Hydrophobicity of Polymethyl Methacrylate (PMMA) Surface by Femtosecond Laser Irradiation

This study presents the contact angle prediction model of a trapezoidal groove structure based on the laser irradiation on polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). The trapezoidal groove structure was designed and proposed according to the characteristics of a femtosecond laser. First, the complete wetting model and incomplete wetting model which were compatible with the characteristics of the laser mechanism were constructed based on the Gibbs free energy and the structural parameters of the trapezoidal groove structure. Then, based on the contact angle prediction models constructed, the samples were divided into two groups according to the designed structural parameters, and the experimental investigations were carried out. The result demonstrated that the incomplete wetting prediction model was more in line with the actual situation. The convex width and the top edge length of spacing of the trapezoidal groove structure both affected the contact angle prediction results. From both the experimental contact angles and the contact angles predicted by the incomplete wetting model, it could be known that the contact angle reached 138.09° when the ratio of the convex width to the top edge length of spacing was 0.25, indicating that the smaller the ratio of the convex width to the top edge length of spacing, the better the hydrophobicity of PMMA.

Intermediate wetting state at nano/microstructured surfaces

A general partial wetting model to describe an intermediate wetting state is proposed in this study to explain the deviations between the experimental results and classical theoretical wetting models for hydrophobic surfaces.

Wetting Model of Asphalt on the Aggregate Surface and Its Effect Factors

Wetting is the process where asphalt infiltrates into the aggregate surface, which is important for the bonding between asphalt and aggregates. In this paper, the aggregate surface textures were simplified to V shape, and a wetting model was established to research the effects of initial temperature and cooling rate of asphalt and aggregate surface texture sizes on the wetting process. The results show that the asphalt infiltrates into the aggregate surface texture faster in the preliminary stage and slower in the later stage. Cooling rate and lower initial temperature of asphalt affect the surface tension and viscosity, resulting in a longer wetting process, but the effects of cooling rate could be ignored in actual practice. The relationship between the infiltration ending time and surface texture size was established, and it is found that the infiltration ending time is essentially proportional to the texture depth squared and inversely proportional to the texture width.

Wetting Transitions of Liquid Gallium Film on Nanopillar-Decorated Graphene Surfaces

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation has been employed to study the wetting transitions of liquid gallium droplet on the graphene surfaces, which are decorated with three types of carbon nanopillars, and to explore the effect of the surface roughness and morphology on the wettability of liquid Ga. The simulation results showed that, at the beginning, the Ga film looks like an upside-down dish on the rough surface, different from that on the smooth graphene surface, and its size is crucial to the final state of liquid. Ga droplets exhibit a Cassie–Baxter (CB) state, a Wenzel state, a Mixed Wetting state, and a dewetting state on the patterned surfaces by changing distribution and the morphology of nanopillars. Top morphology of nanopillars has a direct impact on the wetting transition of liquid Ga. There are three transition states for the two types of carbon nanotube (CNT) substrates and two for the carbon nanocone (CNC) one. Furthermore, we have found that the substrates show high or low adhesion to the Ga droplet with the variation of their roughness and top morphology. With the roughness decreasing, the adhesion energy of the substrate decreases. With the same roughness, the CNC/graphene surface has the lowest adhesion energy, followed by CNT/graphene and capped CNT/graphene surfaces. Our findings provide not only valid support to previous works but also reveal new theories on the wetting model of the metal droplet on the rough substrates.
