THE EVALUATION OF COMPETITIVENESS ON COST ADVANTAGE OF REGIONAL HUB PORT: THE CASE STUDY OF TRANS-PACIFIC ROUTE AGAINST KAOHSIUNG PORT

Numerous conventional container ports in East Asia are evolving from intercontinental into regional hub ports. This study adopted the Port of Kaohsiung as an example of competition with neighboring ports. The results of this study demonstrated that the Port of Kaohsiung is still a competitive docking port on trans-Pacific trunk routes for North America, despite facing external threats (e.g., upsizing of ships, lack of new deep-water terminals, and new strategic alliances affecting terminal operations), overall shipping cost considerations (e.g., container volume, different ship sizes, and port selection), and increasingly intense competition with neighboring ports. Under such circumstances, the Port of Kaohsiung must keep pace with container ship upsizing, sufficiently increase deep-water terminal capacity, and improve its existing container terminals’ operating efficiency to attract route deployment and larger container ships and thereby maintain its current advantages and position as a regional hub port.

SIMULATION OF VESSEL BERTHING USING ARENA: CASE OF BEIRUT CONTAINER TERMINAL

The main objective of this research is to analyze the current situation of Beirut Container Terminal. The proposed methodology is to mimic current terminal operations using a simulation model using ARENA software in order to identify causes of queueing occurring at berth allocation. Field research was conducted and both qualitative and quantitate data were collected using interviews, on–site observations, and online vessel tracking. A base model is developed to simulate the current operations at Beirut Container Terminal. Then, three different feasible scenarios are proposed to minimize the total time spent by the vessel at the quay side. Proposed scenarios take into consideration physical and resources expansion subject to political and financial constraints. The aim of this research is to provide a tool for the decision maker at Beirut Container Terminal in formulating an investment strategy for future expansion.

Monte caro tree search algorithm for the receiving containers intelligently problem among container shipping terminals

With the development of economic globalization, shipping exchanges between countries are rapidly increasing and the container throughput of shipping ports has increased quickly, and the operation of most seaport terminals in China has reached a bottleneck which puts forward new requirements for the efficiency of container shipping terminal operations. Therefore, locating for export containers intelligently is of great significance for the development of terminals. This paper focuses on receiving containers intelligently, and establishes the export container locating model based on the principle of actual shipping terminal operations. The Monte Carlo Tree Search algorithm for export container locating problem was proposed and constructed. After examples, the algorithm can effectively solve the problem that meet the constraints, which further proves the practicability of the algorithm and the correctness of the model. The research shows that the method of locating for export container based on Monte Carlo Tree Search algorithm can effectively solve the problem and maintain the green, energy-saving and sustainable development of the shipping terminal. The ideas and methods have certain academic value and reference significance for other NP-Hard problems.

Correlated Bayesian Model of Aircraft Encounters in the Terminal Area Given a Straight Takeoff or Landing

The incorporation of unmanned aircraft terminal operations into the scope of Detect and Avoid systems necessitates analysis of the safety performance of those systems—principally, an assessment of how well those systems prevent loss of well clear from and collision with other aircraft. This type of analysis has typically been conducted by Monte Carlo simulation with synthetic, statistically representative encounters between aircraft drawn from an appropriate encounter model. While existing encounter models include terminal airspace classes, none explicitly represents the structure expected while engaged in terminal operations, e.g., aircraft in a traffic pattern. The work described herein is an initial model of such operations, scoped at this time specifically for assessment of unmanned aircraft landings and encounters with other aircraft either landing or taking off. The model shares the Bayesian network foundation of other MIT Lincoln Laboratory encounter models but tailors those networks to address structured terminal operations, i.e., correlations between trajectories and the airfield and each other. This initial model release is intended to elicit feedback from the standards-writing community.

Estimation of land-based emissions during container terminal operations in the Ambarlı Port, Turkey

Many types of mobile vehicles are used simultaneously in container terminal operations. Because most of these mobile vehicles have diesel engines, they emit a significant amount of pollutant emissions into the atmosphere during their operation. They are considered as land-based mobile emission sources (MobES) and should be included in the total port emission inventory. The emission inventory is a basic requirement in developing an environmental management strategy to improve emission control. In this context, this study aims to estimate the emission inventories of mobile vehicles used in terminal operations in the Ambarlı container ports located in the city of Istanbul, which is one of the most populous cities in the world. In this respect, the amounts of the emissions of all the container handling equipment with diesel engines in the port areas, including external trucks delivering/receiving containers to/from the port were estimated using an activity-based method. It has been found that approximately 42.39% of the total CO2 emission is owing to terminal tractors and the total annual CO2 value per TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit) of MobES is 0.01259 tons. The CO2 value per TEU can serve as a CO2 emission performance indicator for land-based MobES in process of the evaluation of emission inventories in container ports.

Impact of the Internet of Things on the formation of a model for optimizing port terminal operations

The research established that new business conditions have radically changed relations between the participants in the transport process. The Coronavirus Disease Pandemic (COVID-19) has revealed the lag of most maritime enterprises in the digitalization process. The problems of interaction and competitions caused by the transformation of stereotypes of behavior of transport services consumers have become more acute. The need for new approaches to optimizing port terminal operations has determined the purpose of the research. The problem is multifold, that is why the article analyzes statistics; a survey of top managers of companies providing port services was conducted. The key requirements of customers are the speed of service, organization of terminal operation on the concept of the Internet of Things, digital competence of company employees that affects the speed and quality of services.In order to optimize terminal operations, the authors suggest applying a mathematical model providing the competent planning of terminal operations with a given probability of customer service. The authors suggest increasing the cooperation between employers and educational institutions in the development of digital competence in students and application of the Internet of Things in the Maritime Industry.

Systemic Agent-Based Modeling and Analysis of Passenger Discretionary Activities in Airport Terminals

Discretionary activities such as retail, food, and beverages generate a significant amount of non-aeronautical revenue within the aviation industry. However, they are rarely taken into account in computational airport terminal models. Since discretionary activities affect passenger flow and global airport terminal performance, discretionary activities need to be studied in detail. Additionally, discretionary activities are influenced by other airport terminal processes, such as check-in and security. Thus, discretionary activities need to be studied in relation to other airport terminal processes. The aim of this study is to analyze discretionary activities in a systemic way, taking into account interdependencies with other airport terminal processes and operational strategies used to manage these processes. An agent-based simulation model for airport terminal operations was developed, which covers the main handling processes and passenger decision-making with discretionary activities. The obtained simulation results show that operational strategies that reduce passenger queue time or increase passenger free time can significantly improve global airport terminal performance through efficiency, revenue, and cost.

An Investigation into Switching Vessel Sizes for Efficient Container Terminal Operations: A Case Study of Kaohsiung Port

Given the continued growth in the size of container ships, major hub ports around the world have carried out large-scale upgrades of their port facilities to attract shipping companies to choose their ports, thereby enhancing the competitiveness of their ports. This study takes Kaohsiung Port as an example and uses the Decision Analytic Network Process (DANP) method to investigate container terminal operations by switching container terminal operations to appropriate new locations. The results of the study indicate that, despite the external issues (such as a lack of deep-water terminals and hinterland in the port area, the upsizing of ships, and new strategic shipping alliances), Kaohsiung Port authority must accelerate the upgrade of its container terminals, integrate its port resources to build deep-water berth facilities with highefficient container operating system, and improve the operating efficiency of its existing terminals, as a means to maintain the status of Kaohsiung Port as a regional centre.
