Abstract How and why do strategy consultancies prioritise graduates from elite universities, and is this practice doing them more harm than good? The association of top strategy firms with elite universities is well-known, but this study suggests that the practice is done more for signaling and ‘fit’ reasons than for recruiting outstanding talent. Using anonymous interviews with recruiters, partners, and consultants at strategy firms, and drawing on Bourdieu’s theory of cultural capital, this paper suggests that these practices may do more harm than good.

The 3-Step Charrette problem-solving methodology turns the classroom into a consulting firm. It trains participants to solve complex, real-world problems cooperatively and systematically. Participants identify needed information and perform several research cycles in teams to gain knowledge to examine the root causes of a presented problem. Participants then re-form into different groups to find solutions, ultimately consolidating their chosen solutions into a plan of action. The jigsaw transposition from research teams to solving groups ensures that participants acquire needed expertise and properly characterize the problem before attempts to fashion solutions even begin. As participants follow the procedure, the instructor guides them using in-stream debriefing. Designed for use with a live client, this experiential exercise is useful for capstone, strategy, consulting, design thinking, and business architecture courses.

This chapter examines strategy consultants as a major part of the Strategy profession. It examines their growth since the middle of the last century, and particularly the development of leading firms such as Bain & Co., the Boston Consulting Group, and McKinsey & Co. It demonstrates the structurally precarious and permeable predicament of strategy consulting firms, with many entries and exits. The challenging economics of strategy consulting are examined, with the problems of cyclical demand, low entry barriers, weak financial structures, and short pipeline highlighted. The chapter identifies three ways strategy consulting firms have managed their predicaments: cultivating professionalism, building relationships, and investing in knowledge. The chapter also examines the nature of strategy consulting work, particularly its combination of high demands and intellectual stimulus.
