Nonuniformity of Isometric Properties of Automotive Driveshafts

This paper presents an analysis of the CVJ (constant velocity joint) of automotive driveshafts from a point of view concerning the nonuniformity of isometric properties. In the automotive industry, driveshafts are considered to have constant velocity through its joints: free tripode joints and fixed ball joints, which has been proved by Mtzner’s indirect method and Orain’s direct method for tripod joint. Based on vectorial mechanics, the paper proved the quasi-isometry of velocity for polypod joints such as fixed ball joints. In the meantime, it was computed that the global nonuniformity of constant velocity joints for modern driveshafts based on the Dudita-Diaconescu homokinetic approach for the driveshafts. The nonuniformity of the velocity isometry of driveshafts was computed as a function of the input angular velocity of the driveshaft, angular inclination between the tripod–tulip axis and the midshaft axis and the angular inclination between the bowl axis and midshaft axis. The main aim of this article is how to improve the geometric and kinematic approach to add an important correction when designing the driveshaft dynamics prediction such as: forced torsional vibrations, forced bending–shearing vibrations, and coupled torsional–bending vibrations for the automotive driveshaft in the regions of specific resonances such as principal parametric resonance, internal resonance, combined resonance, and simultaneous resonances. By the way it is added, there are important corrections for the design of driveshafts, for the torsional dynamic behavior prediction, and for bending–shearing dynamic behavior of the driveshafts in the early stages of design. The results presented in the article represent a starting point for future research on dynamic phenomena in the area mentioned previously.

Grease composition influence on friction & starvation

Nowadays, grease lubrication is frequently used in rolling element applications such as bearings or constant velocity joints. The advantage of grease is to supply lubrication to the application without leaking thanks to its consistency. Nevertheless, starvation can occur leading to damage such as scuffing. In the present study, starvation is analyzed using the Starvation Degree parameter through tests with different operating conditions and different types of greases.

Development of an Anthropomorphic Prosthetic Hand with Underactuated Mechanism

An anthropomorphic prosthetic hand for wrist or forearm amputees is developed herein. The prosthetic hand was designed with an underactuated mechanism, which makes self-adaptive grasping possible, as well as natural motions such as flexion and extension. The finger and thumb modules were designed with four degrees of freedom by motions of the distal interphalangeal, proximal interphalangeal, and metacarpophalangeal joints. In this research, we pursued several novel trials in prosthetic hand design. By using two four-bar linkages composed of a combination of linkages and gears for coupling joints at each finger, it was possible to make a compact design, and the linkage has advantages such as accurate positioning, uniform power transmission, and high payload. Also, by using constant-velocity joints, torque is transferred to finger modules regardless of adduction/abduction motions. In addition, adduction/abduction and self-adaptive grasping motions are passively realized using torsional springs. The developed prosthetic hand was fabricated with a weight of 475 g and a human hand size of 175 mm. Experiments with diverse objects showed its good functionality.

Influence of the angle of collapse of the shaft axle, rotational speed and dynamic imbalance on transverse shifts of the homokinetic joint

The article discusses analyze issues of drive shafts incorporating constant velocity joints dynamics. It focuses mainly on an impact of a joint on a shaft center support lateral vibrations caused by dynamic loads.
