Focusing on mothers with young children, the aim of this study was to understand their daily experiences and the effects of parenting uplifts on mothers’ well-being. This study comprised two parts: In Study 1, we examined and analyzed the daily hassles and uplifts that mothers experience. Two hundred and six married, full-time working mothers with young children were interviewed using Target Complaints instrument. Family was found to be the dominant domain in which both daily hassles and uplifts were experienced. We then compared the intensity of hassles and uplifts among the domains; the intensity for family-based uplifts was the strongest. In Study 2, we further investigated Study 1 findings and examined the effects of parenting uplifts on mothers’ well-being. Three hundred and thirty-six couples filled out questionnaires. We found that parenting uplifts were positively associated with the mothers’ life satisfaction. Finally, the actor–partner interdependence model (APIM) revealed that fathers’ parenting uplifts influenced the mothers’ life satisfaction.

Assessment of couple distress shares basic principles of assessing individuals. However, couple assessment differs from individual assessment in that couple assessment strategies focus specifically on relationship processes and the interactions between individuals, provide an opportunity for direct observation of target complaints involving communication and other interpersonal exchanges, and must be sensitive to potential challenges unique to establishing a collaborative alliance when assessing highly distressed or antagonistic partners. This chapter focuses on the assessment of couple distress. It begins with a review of the nature of couple conflict and distress, which is followed by a review of clinical assessment instruments designed for the assessment purposes of (a) determining couple functioning, (b) case conceptualization and treatment planning, and (c) treatment monitoring and evaluation. Recommendations are included for instruments with the greatest scientific support and for assessing couple functioning in a clinically sensitive manner.

Target complaints measures have been used frequently as measures of psychotherapy outcome, but lack adequate concurrent validity data and suffer a number of methodological problems. In the present study, a simplified written version of a client- and therapist-rated target complaints measure was completed along with a variety of other commonly used outcome measures on 138 clients at the beginning of psychotherapy and then at 2 months' follow-up. Although client and therapist severity ratings were positively correlated, there was some inconsistency between the content of client and therapist complaints. Strong support was found for the concurrent validity of the target complaints measures. Both client and therapist ratings of target complaints significantly correlated with measures of anxiety, psychological distress, symptom severity, and client satisfaction. However, the magnitude of the correlations suggested that target complaints measures offered unique problem information in addition to the other outcome measures and were an economical adjunct.
