This study examines the determinants of outbound tourism from China to 73 destinations, while focusing on the impact of direct flights, cultural heritage, and the conditional effect of geographical distance. Panel data covering the period from 2000 to 2014 are used to estimate the working model. The results reveal that the impact of distance conditional on the development status of destinations is positive. Direct flight is positive and significant, demonstrating that an increase in the number of cities accessible with direct flights will increase outbound tourism. Cultural heritage is positive but not significant because most destinations recorded zero heritage centers. These results point to need for African countries to strive towards becoming developed, and for destinations to ensure the availability of direct flights from their respective countries to China.

In situ renewable energy production is a favourable alternative for reducing pollution and combating climate change. The research area, Cuenca, Ecuador, is located in the Andes near the equator with optimal conditions for energy self-supply due to its low energy demands and low levels of irradiation variability. In this study, temporary fluctuations in consumption based on 2016 electricity consumption data are characterized. Using GIS, available roofing polygons are obtained, and the amount of usable solar radiation is estimated based on these values. With available surface, orientation, and inclination information, electricity generation based on photovoltaic performance is estimated and compared for monocrystalline silica panels and photovoltaic solar roof tiles, which are architectural alternatives. A potential net supply of 148% is found for monocrystalline silica photovoltaic panels in a typical format, whereas that of photovoltaic tiles is only 61%. In addition, production-demand imbalances are predicted in extreme months and average months and on extreme days due to variations in irradiation and demands.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to explore the introduction of cruise ship tourism into historic urban centers, and the mitigation policies that can be implemented to encourage sustainable development of this relationship.Design/methodology/approachThe paper focuses on the unique aspects of cruise tourism that differentiate it from other forms of mass tourism. Using the specific example of Charleston, South Carolina, it explores the difficulties that cruise tourism present to local residents and policymakers. It looks at different mitigation policies that have previously been implemented in cruise destinations around the world, and analyzes which have been the most effective.FindingsCruise ship tourism is the fastest growing segment of the tourism industry, and it is an issue that many coastal heritage destinations will soon face. Uncontrolled tourism from cruise ships is unsustainable, and strong government intervention is needed to maintain heritage cities.Originality/valueThis paper provides compelling evidence that cruise ship tourism presents an immediate threat to sustainable tourism in urban heritage centers, and provides policy recommendations for lawmakers.
