Advances in Optical Based Turbidity Sensing Using LED Photometry (PEDD)

Turbidity is one of the primary metrics to determine water quality in terms of health and environmental concerns, however analysis typically takes place in centralized facilities, with samples periodically collected and transported there. Large scale autonomous deployments (WSNs) are impeded by both initial and per measurement costs. In this study we employ a Paired Emitter-Detector Diode (PEDD) technique to quantitatively measure turbidity using analytical grade calibration standards. Our PEDD approach compares favorably against more conventional photodiode-LED arrangements in terms of spectral sensitivity, cost, power use, sensitivity, limit of detection, and physical arrangement as per the ISO 7027 turbidity sensing standard. The findings show that the PEDD technique was superior in all aforementioned aspects. It is therefore more ideal for low-cost, low-power, IoT deployed sensors. The significance of these findings can lead to environmental deployments that greatly lower the device and per-measurement costs.

Polymerization of Styrene in the Presence of Polybutadiene as a Stabilizer

The problem of synthesis of polymer suspensions with a narrow particle size distribution is relevant, since the field of their practical application is extremely wide. They are used as calibration standards in electron and optical microscopy and light scattering, for determining the pore size of filters and biological membranes, as model colloids, for studying the kinetics and mechanism of film formation from latex, as well as as polymer carriers of biological ligands in immunochemical studies [1].

Algorithmic reparation

Machine learning algorithms pervade contemporary society. They are integral to social institutions, inform processes of governance, and animate the mundane technologies of daily life. Consistently, the outcomes of machine learning reflect, reproduce, and amplify structural inequalities. The field of fair machine learning has emerged in response, developing mathematical techniques that increase fairness based on anti-classification, classification parity, and calibration standards. In practice, these computational correctives invariably fall short, operating from an algorithmic idealism that does not, and cannot, address systemic, Intersectional stratifications. Taking present fair machine learning methods as our point of departure, we suggest instead the notion and practice of algorithmic reparation. Rooted in theories of Intersectionality, reparative algorithms name, unmask, and undo allocative and representational harms as they materialize (American English sp) in sociotechnical form. We propose algorithmic reparation as a foundation for building, evaluating, adjusting, and when necessary, omitting and eradicating machine learning systems.

A robust enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay to measure serum ramucirumab concentrations

Aim: Ramucirumab, an anti-VEGFR2 monoclonal antibody, has been approved for the treatment of metastatic gastric and colorectal cancer. An assay measuring ramucirumab serum concentrations was needed to investigate its pharmacokinetics and concentration–response relationship. Results: An ELISA was developed and validated according to the international guidelines for ligand-binding assays. Ramucirumab calibration standards ranged from 0.125 to 40 mg/l. Low, middle and high quality controls were spiked at 0.2, 4 and 8 mg/l, respectively. The limits of quantification were established to be 0.125 and 10 mg/l for LLOQ and ULOQ, respectively. No cross-reactivity with anti-VEGF or anti-EGFR was detected. Conclusion: This in-house-developed ELISA is sensitive, accurate, reproducible and suitable for pharmacokinetic studies of ramucirumab.

Applications of Vacuum Measurement Technology in China’s Space Programs

The significance of vacuum measurement technology is increasingly prominent in China’s thriving space industry. Lanzhou Institute of Physics (LIP) has been dedicated to the development of payloads and space-related vacuum technology for decades, and widely participated in China’s space programs. In this paper, we present several payloads carried on satellites, spaceships, and space stations; the methodologies of which covered the fields of total and partial pressure measurement, vacuum and pressure leak detection, and standard gas inlet technology. Then, we introduce the corresponding calibration standards developed in LIP, which guaranteed the detection precision of these payloads. This review also provides some suggestions and expectations for the future development and application of vacuum measurement technology in space exploration.
