The number of Americans watching political comedy shows has significantly growing recent years. The views increase as TV channels spread their programs into social media, such as YouTube. The comic and funny aspects depicted in the political parody can be in the forms of imitation, impersonation, and reflection of one’s character, expression, and appearance. This paper aims to investigate American TV programs, The President Show and Saturday Night Live’s The Presidential Debate, by employing humor theory seen from Van Dijk’s critical discourse analysis. The dialogues used by the impersonators are analyzed to figure out the elements of funny features, comedy, and parody. Hence, the purpose of this study is to answer whether or not the discourse mechanism can build humor in The President Show and Saturday Night Live’s The Presidential Debate. The data apply ten Comedy Central’s YouTube videos and four Saturday Night Live’s YouTube videos. The data comprises of political and power discourse. The analysis concludes that both shows utilize some aggressive strategies to criticize Trump’s character, such as metaphor to represent policies, contrast to illustrate positive self-representation, and hyperbole to demonstrate racism. While Saturday Night Live applies Hillary Clinton to contrast Trump’s image. Saturday Night Live contrast Trump by applying strategies such as disclaimer, implication, incongruity, aggressive, and illustration to criticize his personalities and his controversial political decisions.

Current study has well-known a helpful connection among positive humor styles in leadership and employee well-being and creativity. Few studies are available on optimistic effects of positive humor styles. In this study, we subsidize to these queries by examining the association among positive humor in management and follower’s well-being and creativity. We suggest that these associations explain through social procedure and definite this social process in positions of leader– member exchange. Furthermore, we undertake that these associations depend on followers’ power distance orientation. We verified the theorized moderated-mediation model in a two-wave survey study with 384 respondents. Anyhow, our outcomes support the anticipated model. We originated the predicted indirect effect of positive humor on employee well-being and creativity to be solider for followers low in power distance orientation. We discourse implications for leadership theory and humor theory.

AbstractThis article offers a qualitative and quantitative socio-cultural examination of RoastMe, a peculiar humorous practice deployed on Reddit and reposted on various social media. First, RoastMe is characterized from the emic (user) perspective and conceptualized in the light of humor theory (superiority and incongruity approaches). RoastMe consists in some users’ posting pictures of themselves with a view to being roasted, i. e. pelted with jocular insults, by other online community members. Albeit a type of disparagement humor, RoastMe is an innocuous humorous activity enclosed within a humorous frame; it is a form of affiliative humor based on users’ unbounded creativity. Second, this paper reports the findings of a quantitative study on the predominant types of targets/roastees depending on their (lack of) salient features, as well as the source and nature of the jocularly disparaged referents in roasting comments, i. e. the central features that roasters make harmless fun of most often, relative to the different categories of roastees.Roasting (v.) – To humorously mock or humiliate someone with a well-timed joke, diss or comeback. (…) Hone your roasting skills, meet other roasters, and get yourself roasted! Everybody needs to laugh at themselves! And other people, of course!(https://www.reddit.com/r/RoastMe/)

Abstract The General Theory of Verbal Humor (GTVH) has dominated the discussion of humor theory for the last quarter of a century. It generated a great deal of interest in humor studies by scholars both within and outside the discipline of linguistics. Problems are resident in GTVH, however, which have been inherited from its predecessor the Semantic Script Theory of Humor (SSTH). Script Opposition and Script Overlap are not adequately defined, nor are they sufficient for the identification of a joke-carrying text. The resource of the Logical Mechanism posited by GTVH may have complicated rather than simplified the matter as the list of proposed mechanisms are too loosely defined and woefully incomplete. The Ontological Semantics Theory of Humor (OSTH) has promised to demonstrate the adequacy of the linguistic theories of humor by the ability of computers to process natural language input to discriminate between joke-carrying and non-joke-carrying texts. That promise, also decades old, remains to be fulfilled, and it is questionable whether it can be fulfilled if based on SSTH and GTVH platforms.

The humor type and function contained in the Indonesian Lawak Klub (ILK) program are interesting to research. There are three types of humor theories in ILK that explain the reasons why someone can  laugh or smile. The three types of humor are the theory of liberation (release), the theory of excellence (superiority), and the theory of incongruity. Whereas the seven functions of humor as communication activities in the social context discussed in this paper are the functions of social control, face-searching tools, building common ground, intelligence, regulating discourse, strengthening social bonds of friendship, and improving tense situations. This paper aims to describe the type of humor theory and the function of humor contained in the ILK program. This research uses the method of qualitative description with observing, note-taking, and study literature techniques. The results of this research then find out how things can arouse laughter or amusement on someone and various functions of humor that are spoken by speakers. This research also illustrates that utterances or dialogues in ILK containing implicatures can produce broader speech meanings than just ordinary utterances. With implicature and humorous discourse in dialogue, criticism and control of the government, the most dominant type of humor theory that appears in ILK is the type of peculiar theory. Whereas the most dominant function of humor appears in ILK is functioned as a tool to improve tense and rigid situations.

This chapter offers a survey of ideas about the healthy body beginning with the Hippocratic Corpus and proceeding through the influential works of Galen to the medicine of the Islamic and Latin Christian worlds. The four humor theory Galen developed on the basis of earlier medical writings became fundamental for later doctors, as did his ideas about scientific method and the theory of the six “non-naturals” that influence health. By manipulating diet, exercise, sexual activity, and so on, the doctor can preserve health and prolong life. Arabic and Latin medical writings built upon the foundations laid by Galen by engaging in further empirical investigation (including animal experimentation) and systematizing medicine as a science.

AbstractHumor is essential to social life, but it is often overlooked in the study of crime and other social problems. We introduce and make use of humor theory, emphasizing the theories of superiority and relief. Based on interviews with incarcerated men, we demonstrate how humor is used to criticize authorities, for self-aggrandizement, and to alleviate the pain of tragic experiences. Funny remarks and stories are often ambiguous and evade simple categorization, which may explain why humor is neglected in the study of social problems. We argue that researchers should pay more attention to humor to achieve a fuller understanding of marginalized individuals and their social worlds.
