The Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) is an accrediting body that assesses the quality and integrity of business-related training programs at educational institutions. As ACBSP applied the Boyer model in evaluating, categorising the business faculty, forcing the faculties to develop the quality of their human resources indirectly, improved education quality. This paper was written to reflect how the Boyer model was applied in business faculties in Vietnamese member institutes and how the institutes are changing to fulfill the standards. The methodology that would be used to analyze the secondary data is descriptive analysis. The data is collected under the acceptance of those institutes. The primary data could be deep interviews with faculty managers, faculty members, board of management of the institutes. In order to be more convincing, the research would also pick some ACBSP members as empirical studies. The findings of the research are the trends of the faculties and the lesson withdrawn from their changing experience.

This paper outlines some of the dilemmas of turning graduates from vocational education and training courses into industry-ready employees.  It raises a number of questions that are ripe for action research with the context of the Boyer model of scholarship.

The Journal of Scholarly Engagement was developed to provide faculty an academic outlet to document and disseminate scholarship primarily in Boyer’s domains of application and integration. The foundation of this new academic journal is Boyer’s Scholarship Reconsidered. In 1990, Boyer and his colleagues at the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching responded to the then, and current, predominant definition of scholarship—one that primarily involves conducting discovery research and publishing results (Boyer, 1990; Moser, 2014). In rethinking what it meant to engage in scholarship, Boyer proposed a more comprehensive model, extending beyond a view limited to scholarship of discovery (i.e., empirical research), to recognize scholarship of integration, application, and teaching. This new model (frequently termed the “Boyer model”) expanded the definition of scholarship beyond merely “conducting discovery research” and “publishing results” to fully embrace the broader purpose of the professoriate.

A quarter of a century has passed since Professor Ernest L. Boyer's landmark book, Scholarship Reconsidered: Priorities of the Professoriate, challenged the publish-or-perish status quo that dominated the academic landscape then and has continued to do so through a variety of research league-table games. His powerful and enduring argument for a broader approach to academic roles and rewards within universities continues to be important as higher education providers balance the varying expectations of their role in society. This paper is more an examination of the provenance of the Boyer model than a review of the book.

This article discusses the importance of collaboration between faculty members with clinical and research-focused doctoral degrees. The barriers to obtaining tenure for clinical faculty members as compared to the research-prepared faculty members are presented. Best practice outcomes are accomplished by using a team approach. The team uses the strengths of each of the academic backgrounds, connecting them in collaboration and professionalism. Support for each other, within the nursing community, provides empowerment and success in both patient outcomes and clinical excellence.

Service-learning is an emerging paradigm in undergraduate education benefitting students, universities, and communities. Students benefit from the practical, hands-on experience of service utilizing the education received through their academic work; universities benefit from the good will and good publicity garnered by successful projects; communities benefit, as service-learning projects often aim to address real and pressing needs. But what of the faculty member whose task it is to identify, formulate and oversee these community projects? In this paper, the argument is made that service-learning projects may potentially provide reward to tenure-track faculty members by inclusion in rank and tenure dossiers. Service-learning projects can be included within the Boyer Model of Scholarship under the scholarship classifications of Application, Teaching, or Engagement. The paper concentrates particularly on the Engagement classification. Additionally, risks to the faculty member choosing to use service-learning as a promotion or tenure tool are discussed. The authors’ own service-learning activities are described and discussed as an example.

In higher education, Boyer’s work “Scholarship Revisited” has regained attention as a greater number of academic programs are applied fields where scholarship defined solely as research is too limited in concept. While discovery of knowledge is critical to the academic enterprise, effective teaching is acknowledged as equally important in the age of outcome-focused education, such as in allied health fields. The time required balancing teaching loads that require 12 hours in the classroom, plus office hours and committee participation can present quite a challenge to the tenure-track faculty member trying to also build and grow a body of research. In the Boyer Model, the Scholarship of Teaching is defined as means of not only educating students but also enticing them to be future scholars (Boyer, 1990). This scholarship demands that teachers be well- informed in the knowledge of their fields. In Allied Health fields, this can be another time challenge as research agendas often follow particular niches within the broader field of study while classroom expertise requires generalist information dissemination. And while continued clinical practice can be informative to the educational enterprise, practice alone does not provide best evidence based information for the classroom. This article will describe the use of assigned course work that bridges the time gap created by these conflicting demands. The assignment calls for the student learners to be critical appraisers of information as it is presented in public formats by requiring that they find the scientific source and analyze the accuracy of the publically presented information. It facilitates the teacher-learner in completing a literature review of emerging topics within the field of study to meet the requirement to be well-informed. Further information on how to make these efforts obvious for the tenure process is discussed.
