A Study of the Residual Strength of Reactive Powder-Based Geopolymer Concrete under Elevated Temperatures

This paper reports on studies relating to the unstressed residual compressive strengths of geopolymer pastes that are heated up to 800 °C, behavior of reactive powder concrete before and after exposure to elevated temperatures and thermal behavior of novel reactive powder geopolymer-based concretes. For this purpose, 10 geopolymer pastes and three reactive powder concrete mixtures were tested for residual strengths. Gladstone fly ash was used as the primary binder for both geopolymer pastes and reactive powder geopolymer concretes. In addition, four novel reactive powder geopolymer concrete mixes were prepared with zero cement utilization. While reactive powder concretes achieved the highest seven-day compressive strengths of approximately 140 MPa, very poor thermal behavior was observed, with explosive spalling occurring at a temperature of ca. 360 °C. The reactive powder geopolymer concretes, on the other hand, displayed relatively high thermal properties with no thermal cracking at 400 °C, or visible signs of spalling and very mild cracking in one case at 800 °C. In terms of the strength of reactive powder geopolymer concrete, a maximum compressive strength of approximately 76 MPa and residual strengths of approximately 61 MPa and 51 MPa at 400 °C and 800 °C, respectively, were observed.

Mechanical Properties of High-Performance Hybrid Fibre-Reinforced Concrete at Elevated Temperatures

Deterioration of concrete’s integrity under elevated temperature requires an alteration in its composition to have better thermal stability. Fibre-reinforced concrete has shown significant improvements in concrete strength and this paper aimed to investigate the influence of steel (ST) and polypropylene (PP) fibres on the behaviour of high-performance concrete (HPC) exposed to elevated temperatures. Six mixtures were prepared and cast by adding one or two types of polypropylene fibre (54 and 9 mm) at 0.25 or 0.5% and either singly or in a hybrid combination, along with a fixed volumetric content at 1% of five-dimensional hooked steel (5DH) fibres. At the age of 28 days, samples were heated to the targeted temperature of 800 °C and cooled down naturally to the laboratory temperature. Visual inspection, flexural, split tensile and compressive strengths were examined before and after the exposure to elevated temperatures. Results exhibited that the hybridization of long and short PP fibres, along with the ST fibres, has notably improved all residual mechanical properties of HPC and kept the integrity of concrete after exposure to elevated temperatures. In addition, PP fibres can significantly prevent spalling, but ST fibres were ineffective in mitigating explosive spalling in beams specimens.

Explosive Spalling Behavior of Single-Sided Heated Concrete According to Compressive Strength and Heating Rate

In this study, the effects of heating rate and compressive strength on the spalling behavior of single-sided heated ring-restrained concrete with compressive strengths of 60 and 100 MPa were investigated. The vapor pressure and restrained stress inside the concrete were evaluated under fast- and slow-heating conditions. Regardless of the heating rate, the concrete vapor pressure and restrained stress increased as the temperature increased, and it was confirmed that spalling occurred in the 100-MPa concrete. Specifically, it was found that moisture migration and restrained stress inside the concrete varied depending on the heating rate. Under fast heating, moisture clogging and restrained stress occurred across the concrete surface, causing continuous surface spalling for the 100-MPa concrete. Under slow heating, moisture clogging occurred, and restrained stress continuously increased in the deep area of the concrete cross-section owing to the small internal temperature difference, resulting in explosive spalling for the 100-MPa concrete with a dense internal structure. Additionally, while the tensile strength of concrete is reduced by heating, stress in the heated surface direction is generated by restrained stress. The combination of stress in the heated concrete surface and the internal vapor pressure generates spalling. The experimental results confirm that heating rate has a significant influence on moisture migration and restrained stress occurrence inside concrete, which are important factors that determine the type of spalling.

Flexural Behavior of Ultra-High-Performance Fiber-Reinforced Concrete Beams after Exposure to High Temperatures

Due to the dense structure of ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC), it is prone to explosive spalling at high temperatures. In this paper, flexural testing of UHPC and high-strength concrete (HSC) beams was carried out at room temperature and after being subjected to different levels of thermal exposure (300–500 °C). The cross-section of the beam specimen was 150 (width) × 200 (depth) mm, and its length was 1500 mm. The flexural and shear design of the beam specimens were carried out in accordance with the ACI 318M-14 code. All of the beams were singly reinforced with two #4 rebars (minimum reinforcement ratio) as a longitudinal tensile reinforcement at the bottom of the specimen and at an effective depth of 165 mm. The flexural load was applied using the three-point load method. The results show that, at room temperature and after being subjected to different thermal exposures, compared with the HSC specimens, the stiffness of the UHPC specimens in the post-cracking stage was relatively larger and the deflection under a given load was smaller. Moreover, whether at room temperature or after exposure to different thermal exposures, the ductility of the UHPC specimens was better than that of the HSC specimens.

Performance of Ultra High Strength Concrete Expose to High Rise Temperature

Fire or high temperature is a serious issue to ultra-high-strength concrete (UHSC). Strength reduction of UHPCs may amount to as high as 80 percent after exposure to 800℃. A sum of four UHSC mixes was synthesized and evaluated in this study after getting exposed to extreme temperatures that reach 1000°C. Steel and polypropylene (PP) fibers were used in this experiment. A total of four mixes were made of UHSC without fibres as a control mix (UHSC-0), UHSC with 2% steel fibres (UHSC-S), UHSC with 2% PP fibres (UHSC-P) and UHSC with 1% steel fibres + 1% PP fibres (UHSC-SP). Workability, direct tensile strength, compressive strength, and splitting tensile strength were examined. Particularly, emphasis was devoted to explosive spalling since UHPCs are typically of compact structure and hence more prone to explosive spalling than other concretes. It was determined that the mixture UHSC-SP had high fire resistance. Following exposure to 1000℃, this mixture preserved a residual compressive strength of 36 MPa, splitting tensile strength of 1.62 MPa and direct tensile strength of 0.8 MPa. On the other hand, UHSC-P also had good fire resistance while UHSC-0 and UHSC-S experienced explosive spalling after heating above 200ᴼC. The incorporation of steel fibers in UHSC-S and UHSC-SP mixtures reveals higher tensile and compressive strength findings at different elevated temperatures as compared to UHSC-0 and UHSC-P. In addition, the result of direct tensile strength appears to be lower than splitting tensile strength at different raised temperatures.

Residual Tensile Properties and Explosive Spalling of High-Performance Fiber-Reinforced Cementitious Composites Exposed to Thermal Damage

This study examined the effect of adding synthetic fibers, that is, polypropylene (PP) and nylon (Ny), on explosive spalling and residual tensile mechanical properties of high-performance fiber-reinforced cementitious composites (HPFRCCs). Three different matrix strengths (100 MPa, 140 MPa, and 180 MPa), four different volume contents of the synthetic fibers (0%, 0.2%, 0.4%, and 0.6%), and three different exposure time (1 h, 2 h, and 3 h) based on the Internatinoal Organization for Standardization (ISO) fire curve were adopted as variables for this experiment. The experimental results revealed that the addition of synthetic fibers improved the resistance to explosive spalling induced by high-temperature, especially when PP and Ny were mixed together. For a higher matrix strength, greater volume content of the synthetic fibers was required to prevent explosive spalling, and higher residual strengths were obtained after the fire tests. An increase in the volume fraction of the synthetic fibers clearly prevented explosive spalling but did not affect the residual tensile strength. In the case of a higher matrix strength, a reduction in the strength ratio was observed with increased exposure time.
