Examining the Mediating Role of Altruism in the Relationship between Empathic Tendencies, the Nature Relatedness, and Environmental Consciousness

A study was conducted using a correlational screening model to determine the mediating effect of altruism in the relationship between empathic tendencies, the nature relatedness and environmental consciousness. The participants of the study, selected via random cluster sampling design, are composed of 305 pre-school teachers working in pre-schools and kindergartens in a city located in Turkey’s Aegean region. The ‘Empathic Tendency Scale’, ‘Altruism Scale’, ‘Nature Relatedness Scale’, and ‘Environmental Consciousness Scale’ were used as data collection tools. The analyses of the sub-purposes were carried out using the PROCESS macro (Model 4) developed by Andrew Hayes using the SPSS infrastructure. When the study results were examined, the indirect effects of the empathic tendency on nature relatedness and environmental consciousness were found to be significant. Thus, altruism was the mediator for the relationship between the empathic tendency and nature relatedness (β=.13, 95% BCA CI [.08; .19]) and for the relationship between emphatic tendency and environmental consciousness (β=.36, %95 BCA CI [.18; .57]).

Losing the Self in Near-Death Experiences: The Experience of Ego-Dissolution

Many people who have had a near-death experience (NDE) describe, as part of it, a disturbed sense of having a “distinct self”. However, no empirical studies have been conducted to explore the frequency or intensity of these effects. We surveyed 100 NDE experiencers (Near-Death-Experience Content [NDE-C] scale total score ≥27/80). Eighty participants had their NDEs in life-threatening situations and 20 had theirs not related to life-threatening situations. Participants completed the Ego-Dissolution Inventory (EDI) and the Ego-Inflation Inventory (EII) to assess the experience of ego dissolution and inflation potentially experienced during their NDE, respectively. They also completed the Nature-Relatedness Scale (NR-6) which measures the trait-like construct of one’s self-identification with nature. Based on prior hypotheses, ratings of specific NDE-C items pertaining to out-of-body experiences and a sense of unity were used for correlational analyses. We found higher EDI total scores compared with EII total scores in our sample. Total scores of the NDE-C scale were positively correlated with EDI total scores and, although less strongly, the EII and NR-6 scores. EDI total scores were also positively correlated with the intensity of OBE and a sense of unity. This study suggests that the experience of dissolved ego-boundaries is a common feature of NDEs.

Nature Connection and 360-Degree Video: An Exploratory Study With Immersive Technology

Background: Immersive technologies may be an avenue to explore the construct of human–nature connection more thoroughly and without some of the obstacles to accessing nature in-person. Purpose: The aim of this project was to discover if self-exposure to immersive virtual nature can lead to any change in nature connectedness. Methodology/Approach: Participants were recruited from the Texas State University campus and randomized into three experimental conditions: a filmed library or nature experience, and an in-nature experience. 360-degree videos of a nature preserve and the university library were projected within a head-mounted display in a laboratory setting. Results of pre- and postsurvey data were compared between experimental groups. Findings/Conclusions: Pairwise comparisons with the Nature Relatedness Scale indicated that participants in the in-nature experience reported significantly stronger beliefs about their connection to nature than those in either virtual condition. With respect to the State of Independence with Nature Scale, planned pairwise comparisons indicated that between participants in the in-nature experience and the virtual nature experience did not differ. Implications: This study suggests that to connect with nature, one should spend time there. In addition, here data support that a virtual immersive nature experience can affect a state-dependent measurement of nature connection, and even equal that of an in-nature experience.

Afektivní dimenze environmentální gramotnosti žáků 2. stupně ZŠ

Afektivní dimenze environmentální gramotnosti představuje složku, jíž je v rámci testování environmentální gramotnosti věnována v posledních letech nejvýznamnější pozornost v zahraničí i u nás. Mezi nejčastěji používané nástroje lze řadit NEP (New Environmental Paradigm), 2-MEV (2 Major Environmental Values), NRS (Nature relatedness scale) a MSELS (Middle School Environmental Literacy Survey). Studie představuje výsledky testování uvedených nástrojů. Jsou zde popsány jejich psychometrické vlastnosti, reliabilita a validita, a analyzován vliv demografických proměnných (pohlaví, věk, ročník, velikost bydliště) na environmentální postoje 2. stupně ZŠ. Cílovou skupinu tvořili žáci 6. až 9. ročníků základních škol napříč Českou republikou. Reliabilita a validita všech nástrojů byla prokázána. Koeficient Cronbachova alfa dosahoval přijatelných hodnot (α > 0,7). Obsahová a konstruktová validita byla diskutována v kontextu řady již publikovaných výzkumů, v případě nástroje MSELS byla konstruktová validita potvrzena zvlášť a u zbývajících nástrojů také souběžná kriteriální validita. Analýza vlivu proměnných přinesla protikladná zjištění. Vztah jednotlivých proměnných k míře afektivní dimenze se jako signifikantní jevil pouze u některých z nich, především u 2-MEV a MSELS. Na základě výsledků lze tedy konstatovat, že se jedná o nestálé faktory ve vztahu k afektivní dimenzi environmentální gramotnosti žáků 2. stupně ZŠ. Testované nástroje lze ovšem doporučit k měření uvedeného konstruktu u dané cílové skupiny.

Možnosti využití Likertovy škály – základní principy aplikace v pedagogickém výzkumu a demonstrace na příkladu zjišťování vztahu člověka k přírodě

Článek je metodologického charakteru a věnuje se primárně možnostem zpracování dat získaných na základě Likertova škálování. Nakládání s takovým typem dat nejprve představuje v obecné rovině a poté ukazuje, jak pracovat s konkrétními daty z oblasti environmentální výchovy. Konkrétně jde o data získaná pomocí škály Nature relatedness scale, která je určena ke zjišťování vztahu jedince k přírodě kvantitativní cestou. Autoři si dali za cíl popsat způsob zpracování dat získaných pomocí Likertovy škály a reflektovat celý postup na konkrétních, reálně získaných datech z oblasti environmentální gramotnosti. Své závěry opírají o řadu výzkumů.
