At the NPI in Rez, the p + Be source reaction was investigated for 30 MeV proton beam and thick beryllium target. For neutron field determination of the p(30)+Be source reaction in close source-to-sample distance, the multi-foil activation technique with a set of 10 activation materials (Au, Co, Lu, Ti, In, Al, Y, Fe, Ni, Nb) was utilized. From resulting reaction rates, the neutron spectrum was reconstructed using the SAND-II unfolding code. New neutron field of white spectrum up to 28 MeV has an intensity of 8.6 × 1010 cm−2s−1 close to target. The obtained neutron field extends the utilization of cyclotron-based fast neutron sources at the NPI and provides new experimental opportunities for future irradiation experiments such as fast neutron activation analysis, nuclear data validation, and radiation damage study of electronics and materials for nuclear energetics.

Abstract The compact neutron generator MP320 (Thermo Scientific Inc.) operating on the principle of a deuterium-tritium reaction was tested before its planned application as the neutron source for the purpose of Fast Neutron Activation Analysis applications. Plates made from Al, Fe, Sn and Si were irradiated by a 14 MeV neutron beam and typical neutron induced reactions were identified.

Analysis of Yogyakarta air quality based on concentration of lead particulate using Fast Neutron Activation Analysis (FNAA) method has been done. The sample was taken 3 times in 16 strategic locations of Yogyakarta city using Hi-Vol air sampler that equipped with cellulose filter TFA 2133. The sample irradiated for 30 min with 14 MeV fast neutron and then counted using gamma spectroscopy (AccuSpec). The result indicated that concentration of Pb-208 along Diponegoro street up to Janti street respectively are minimally (0.689 - 0.775) mg/m3, and maximally:  (1.598 - 1.785) mg/m3. According to DIY governor decree No. 153/2002 about the limited toxicity ambient on Yogyakarta area it is concentration that Pb. The concentration of Pb-208 are still below the permitted value of 2 mg/m3, but in certain areas, the Pb concentration is almost equal to upper limit of permitted concentration of Pb.   Keywords: air borne, neutron generator, FNAA
