Geochemical Characterization of Mineralized Pegmatites around Wowyen Areas, Akwanga, Northcentral Nigeria

This study aims to account for the petrogenesis and mineralization of pegmatites around the Wowyen area, northcentral basement complex,Nigeria. Field studies, petrography and whole rock geochemistry (Major oxides were estimated by X-Ray Fluorescence while the trace elements were estimated by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry) where the methods adopted. The pegmatites around Wowyen area are emplaced in the remobilized belt of the Nigerian Basement complex. They are predominantly complex pegmatites (rare-metal pegmatites) which are intruded in the biotite-muscovite gneiss while the simple pegmatites intruded more in the migmatitic banded gneiss. The major components of the complex pegmatites are quartz, albite and muscovite and tourmaline.The accessory constituents are garnet; ilmenites; cassiterite-columbitetantalite oxides in contrast to quartz, microcline and biotite of the simple pegmatites. The complex pegmatites show higher peraluminous than the simple pegmatites, however, higher fractionation is observed in the complex pegmatites than the simple pegmatites. The complex pegmatites are rather enriched in rare elements such as Li, Rb, B, Cs, Sn, Nb, Be and Ta and show low ratios in Al/Ga and K/Rb than the simple pegmatites. The pegmatites are likely product of sedimentary origin and originated from post-collisional tectonic event.

SEISMICITY of the URALS and WESTERN SIBERIA in 2015

The article summarizes information about seismic network in the Urals and Western Siberia region, describes processing technique, presents a short analysis of the seismic activity in 2015. Seismic network capability is shown for the whole territory under control. It was found that about 82 % of registered events are explosions in mines and open pits, 37 events are natural or induced ones. For the strongest induced events, variants of source parameters obtained by different agencies are shown. The strongest tectonic event in 2015 and for the last century (after 1914) is the Middle Ural earthquake with ML=4.7, I0=6 that occurred on October 18, 2015.

Outcrop Analogues to Fractured Reservoirs, UAE

Fractures were not the focus of reservoir studies in Abu Dhabi for the last decades, although its importance in enhancing production, as the general understanding considering fractures are not contributing to production. The fractured carbonate outcrops provide useful analogue observations, data and concepts to support subsurface hydrocarbon reservoir characterization from well and seismic data. The fracture orientation, size, porosity, length, spacing, crosscutting relationships, fracture density versus lithology and bed thickness and connectivity are difficult to measure directly from subsurface well and core data. The understanding of fracture formation and distribution and their effects on fluid flow has been greatly improved by the use of outcrop analogue data through the current work. This paper address the fracture geometry, kinematics and mechanical properties based on outcrops matching Abu Dhabi subsurface reservoir analogues. Integrating outcrop data with fracture orientation and fracture density from core and borehole image data, and seismic capturing fractures characteristics. The outcrop analogues constrain the uncertainty and developing new concepts in characterizing the interplay of rock matrix and fracture networks relevant to fluid flow and hydrocarbon recovery. Analysing the fractures with fracture lengths, aperture, spacing per each interval and relate them to the tectonic event are extracted strictly in the reservoir section. The results showing developed highly dipping shear fractures with short length, small spacing and bimodal aperture distribution that related to fracture orientation. Fracture porosity is dependent on size and controlled by lithology, bed thickness, paleostress and rock composition. Understanding fractures and their behaviour will optimize production greatly and they create exploration targets in otherwise tight reservoir zones, including under-explored sections.

Foraminiferal Analysis of the Late Miocene- Early Pleistocene Mangaopari Mudstone, South Wairarapa, New Zealand

<p>The foraminiferal content of thirty-two samples from the late Miocene-early Pleistocene Mangaopari Mudstone within the southern Wairarapa region have been examined with the aim of determining the age and depositional environment of the unit. In particular the study addressed whether or not there were glacioeustatic cycles present in the unit. Integrating foraminiferal faunal distributions and sedimentological analysis provided geological, paleoclimactic, and paleoceanographic evidence to aid in the reconstruction of the paleoenvironment. The data was then compared with conclusions from previous studies. The section was divided into two different parts (upper and lower) based on changes in foraminiferal assemblages and grainsize distributions. The age and depositional environment of the Mudstone is suggested by the presence of several genera and species of foraminifera which is supported by grainsize analysis. The presence of Martinottiella communis and Karreriella cylindrica between 0-157.1m stratigraphically suggest that accumulation began in bathyal conditions at depths greater than 400m between. This is supported by grainsize analysis which indicates a medium silt with a high percent mud content ranging from 91.5-100%. This demonstrates deposition beginning in the late Miocene-early Pliocene at bathyal depths greater than 400m. The upper part of the mudstone (157.6-216.3) illustrates a regressive sequence with a distinctive shift to a much shallower depositional environment at outermost shelfal depths likely of 150-200m. This is represented with the presence of Truncorotalia sp. and Zygochlamys delicatula. Grainsize also support this discovery with a shift to very fine sandy silts with a percent mud content ranging from 83-93%. Previous findings conclude that this distinctive shift was caused by glacioeustatic cycles yet our data do not correlate with our glacioeustatic findings. Therefore, this shift is believed to be triggered by a tectonic event.</p>

First Evidence of the Post-Variscan Magmatic Pulse on the Western Edge of East European Craton: U-Pb Geochronology and Geochemistry of the Dolerite in the Lublin Podlasie Basin, Eastern Poland

The U–Pb measurements of youngest, coherent group of zircons from the Mielnik IG1 dolerite at the Teisseyre-Tornquist margin (TTZ) of East European Craton (EEC) in Poland yielded age of 300 ± 4 Ma. Zircon dated an evolved portion of magma at the late stage crystallization. It is shown that this isolated dyke from the northern margin of the Lublin Podlasie basin (Podlasie Depression) and regional dyke swarms of close ages from the Swedish Scania, Bornholm and Rügen islands, Oslo rift, Norway, and the Great Whine Sill in northeastern England, were coeval. They have been controlled by the same prominent tectonic event. The Mielnik IG1 dolerite is mafic rock with Mg-number between 52 and 50 composed of the clinopyroxene, olivine-pseudomorph, plagioclase, titanite, magnetite mineral assemblage, indicating relatively evolved melt. This hypabyssal rock has been affected by postmagmatic alteration. The subalkaline basalt composition, enrichment in incompatible trace elements, progressive crustal contamination, including abundance of zircon xenocrysts determines individual characteristics of the Mielnik IG1 dolerite. The revised age of dolerite, emplaced in vicinity of TTZ provides more evidences documenting the reach of the Permo-Carboniferous extension and rifting accompanied by magmatic pulses, that were widespread across Europe including the margin of the EEC incorporated that time into the broad foreland of the Variscan orogen.

The Tectonic event of the Zaire-Hala’alate thrust belt in Junggar Basin,China

The Yanshanian tectonic activity intensity effect of The Zaire- Hala’alate thrust belt, which is located in the northwest margin of Junggar Basin, have been in dispute for a long time. The distribution characteristics of the FT peak age in the narrower time domain is the key to understanding the dynamic mechanism of this important intracontinental deformation. In this study, apatite fission track dating and thermal history simulation analysis were carried out on 6 samples collected from this area. The results show that the fission track ages are mainly distributed in three intervals, corresponding to the geological ages of 130∼128Ma, 92∼89Ma and 72Ma, reflecting the obvious cooling and uplifting events in the three periods. At the same time, the thermal history simulation shows that the region experienced three rapid uplift events in the Early Cretaceous, the Early Late Cretaceous and the Late Cretaceous-Eocene. The comprehensive study shows that the main thrust fold in this area started from the end of Early Cretaceous, and the tectonic movement was the most intense in Late Cretaceous. As a whole, Tectonic activity migrated from south to north, which shows a retro-thrust expansion from the basin to the orogenic belt.

Combined Zircon/Apatite U-Pb and Fission-Track Dating by LA-ICP-MS and Its Geological Applications: An Example from the Egyptian Younger Granites

Laser Ablation-Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) is classically used in U-Pb dating to measure U and Pb isotopic concentrations. Recently, it has become frequently used in fission-track (FT) chronometry too. As an advantage, the U-Pb and FT double dating will enable efficiently determining the crystallization ages and the thermo-tectonic history concurrently as samples volume, analytical time, efforts, and cost will be greatly reduced. To demonstrate the validity of this approach, a Younger granite (Ediacaran age) sample from North Eastern Desert (NED), Egypt was analyzed for U-Pb and FT double dating. The integration of multiple geochronologic data yielded a zircon U-Pb crystallization age of 599 ± 30 Ma, after emplacement, the rock cooled /uplifted rapidly to depths of 9–14 km as response to the post-Pan African Orogeny erosional event as indicated by apatite U-Pb age of 474 ± 9 Ma. Afterwards, the area experienced a slow cooling/exhumation for a short period, most-likely as response to denudation effect. During the Devonian, the area was rapidly exhumed to reach depths of 1.5–3 km as response to the Hercynian tectonic event, as indicated by a zircon FT age of 347 ± 16 Ma. Then the studied sample has experienced a relatively long period of thermal stability between the Carboniferous and the Eocene. During the Oligocene-Miocene, the Gulf of Suez opening event affected the area by crustal uplift to its current elevation. This integration of Orogenic and thermo-tectonic information reveals the validity, efficiency, and importance of double dating of U-Pb and FT techniques using LA-ICP-MS methodology.

Plio-Pleistocene Perth Basin water temperatures and Leeuwin Current dynamics (Indian Ocean) derived from oxygen and clumped isotope paleothermometry

The Pliocene sedimentary record provides a window into Earth’s climate dynamics under warmer-than-present boundary conditions. However, the Pliocene cannot be considered a stable warm climate that constitutes a solid baseline for middle-road future climate projections. Indeed, the increasing availability of time-continuous sedimentary archives (e.g., marine sediment cores) reveals complex temporal and spatial patterns of Pliocene ocean and climate variability on astronomical timescales. The Perth Basin is particularly interesting in that respect because it remains unclear if and how the Leeuwin Current sustained the comparably wet Pliocene climate in West-Australia, as well as how it influenced Southern Hemisphere paleoclimate variability. To constrain Leeuwin Current dynamics in time and space, this project constructed a new orbitally-resolved planktonic foraminifera (Trilobatus sacculifer) stable isotope record (δ18O and clumped isotopes Δ47) for the Plio-Pleistocene (4–2 Ma) interval of International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Site U1459. It complements an existing TEX86 record from the same site and similar planktonic isotope records from the Northern Carnarvon Basin (ODP Site 763 and IODP Site U1463). The comparison of TEX86 and Δ47 paleothermometers reveals that TEX86 likely reflects sea surface temperatures (SST, 23.8–28.9 °C), whereas T. sacculifer Δ47 calcification temperatures probably echo the state of the lower mixed layer and upper thermocline at the studied Site U1459 (18.2–20.8 °C). The isotopic δ18O gradient along a 19° S–29° S latitudinal transect, between 3.9–2.2 Ma, displays large variability, ranging between 0.5 and 2.0 ‰, whereby a low latitudinal gradient is indicative of a strong Leeuwin Current and vice versa. These results challenge the interpretation that suggested a tectonic event in the Indonesian Throughflow as the cause for the rapid steepening of the isotopic gradient (0.9 to 1.5 ‰) around 3.7 Ma. The tectonic interpretation appears obsolete as it is now clear that the 3.7 Ma steepening of the isotopic gradient is intermittent, with flat latitudinal gradients (~0.5 ‰) restored in the latest Pliocene (2.9–2.6 Ma). Still, the new analysis affirms that a combination of astronomical forcing of wind patterns and eustatic sea level controlled Leeuwin Current intensity. A period of relatively weak Leeuwin Current between 3.7 and 3.1 Ma is advocated; a time interval also marked by cooler conditions throughout the Southern Hemisphere. In conclusion, the intensity of the Leeuwin Current and the latitudinal position of the subtropical front are rooted in the same forcing: Heat transport through the Indonesian Throughflow (ITF) valve propagated to the temperate zone through Indian Ocean poleward heat transport. The common ITF forcing explains the observed coherence of Southern Hemisphere ocean and climate records.

Meso-Cenozoic Exhumation of the Linqing Sub-Basin, Bohai Bay Basin: Implications for Cratonic Destruction

The relationship between the tectonic event of the Linqing Sub-basin and the destruction of the North China Craton (NCC) is an important factor to consider when studying geodynamic mechanisms in eastern China. In the current study, we present a low-temperature apatite thermochronological analysis of 14 samples to study the tectonic event of the Linqing Sub-basin. Our data showed that the apatite fission track (AFT) ages were in the range of 53.5–124.4 Ma, and the average track lengths were 8.00–11.24 μm. The grain ages showed that 10 samples had mixed ages and were characterized by discordant distribution. The minimum ages decomposed from AFT ages mainly ranged from 105.3 to 40.8 Ma. We identified a break-in-slope from the depth-minimum age profile, which was related to the Meso-Cenozoic tectonic event. The AFT age data could be decomposed into three age groups, namely, P3 (394.8–215.7 Ma), P2 (124.6–83.4 Ma), and P1 (70.7–40.8 Ma), indicating three significant tectonic events in the NCC. P3 is related to the uplift of the NCC at 445.0–315.0 Ma and deformation and magmatism at 320.0–200.0 Ma. P2 corresponds to the Mesozoic tectonic activities, such as the closure of the Mongol–Okhotsk Ocean, the turning of the Izanagi plate and mantle convection. P1 mainly corresponds to the Izanagi–Pacific ridge, the closure of the Tethys Ocean, and the rotation of the Philippine Sea plate in the Cenozoic. Our study provides evidence for the destruction of the NCC, and has significance for the understanding of the deep mechanism.
