This paper explores the validity of the Typical Intellectual Engagement (TIE) construct in relation to the five factor model (FFM) of personality and locus of control (LOC). Validity was initially explored in terms of the general TIE construct and its three facets (1) problem-directed thinking, (2) abstract thinking and (3) reading. A subsequent factor analytic exploration confirmed these three facets but suggested the existence of two others: (1) ‘intellectual avoidance’ and (2) ‘intellectual pursuits as a primary focus’. ‘Intellectual avoidance’ is similar to Dweck's (1986) notion of maladaptive motivation. Using a sample of 281 participants a number of differential predictions were made and supported, for example: TIE ‘problem-directed’ thinking was the primary associate of both internal LOC and C, while TIE ‘abstract thinking’ was the primary associate of I. Further, TIE and both its facets/factors, but not I, were associated with LOC. It was argued, therefore, that while I and TIE are linked via abstract reasoning, they are measuring something distinct in terms of beliefs about personal agency.

This study examines the nature of stimulus processing under semantic and nonsemantic orienting instructions. Two experiments are reported in which subjects were presented with a series of trials each beginning with the presentation of a “decision word” about which they made either a semantic or non-semantic orienting decision. This decision was followed by a word in coloured ink whose colour subjects were required to name as quickly as possible. On half the trails the coloured word was the primary associate of the decision word whilst on the other half the two words were normatively unrelated. On completion of the experiments the subjects were given an unexpected free recall test. The semantic orienting condition led to longer colour naming latencies on associate trials whilst no such difference was found in the non-semantic condition. The semantic condition also produced higher levels of incidental recall although paradoxically an analysis of associative clustering in recall failed to show any difference between the two orienting conditions. The results are interpreted as support for the “Levels of Processing” approach to memory since they provide an index of processing depth which is independent of retention performance.

This experiment examined accessibility of an item to recall by varying an associative hierarchy factor of relative distance (RD) which was defined as distance of communality of primary associate to secondary one. Two lists of R (remote distance) vs N (near distance) words were randomized and verbally presented. Ss' immediate free recall showed that amount of correct recall and extraneous intrusion was significantly more frequent in the N list than in the R list. As the stimulus words were controlled for possible associative indices except RD, associative function in recall was discussed.

This study of an hierarchical characteristic of associative strength was concerned with an associative factor of relative distance (RD) measured as distance from a primary associate to the secondary as referred to communality. Different stimulus lists varied RD by making the communality of primaries homogeneous and varying that of secondaries. The method of independent repetitions for successive trials of presentation of a stimulus was adopted, and the repetitive probability of associations and the latencies were measured. The RD directly reflected repetitions of associations, while among the lists of corresponding RD there was no difference in latency. Implications of the RD were discussed.

In an attempt to replicate the Spence (1964) finding that primary recall hinders the recall of primary associates, an experiment controlling for serial position and associative clustering effects was performed. Results were obtained which indicate facilitation rather than restriction of associate recall after primary recall. Spence-type results were obtained, however, with Ss whose scores were above the sample mean on the Extraversion scale of the Maudsley Personality Inventory. In addition, hypotheses based on Eysenck's theories concerning introversion-extraversion and anxiety were tested as to their efficacy in predicting the amount and pattern of primary associate (associates to the primary of a word list) and control word associate (associates related to a primary which does not appear in the word list) recall. As predicted, extraversion correlated with the degree to which S alternated between primary associates and control associates during recall. Anxiety was not related to any of the experimental measures.
